Hi Terry, it would be nice to review Travelodge Central Croydon. There are many council guests here, and Sunday nights are cheap here. Are you on "What's App" and I will send you photos of the ground floor us regulars, call the psychiatric unit. Holes in the ceiling!!!

The problem with many old hotels: when built the main bedrooms were only on the first 2-4 floors and the public ground floor was grand. The rooms further up were for servants and hotel workers that lived in house so it didn’t matter they were small or the corridors were mazes. Roll on the late 20th century when no one has servants travel with them or hotel staff lived in house they were converted to additional bedrooms and the result is wildly different standards and sizes and a maze like corridors to get to them.

My wife and I stayed here a couple of years ago, and are going again this year (2023). It is a lovely old hotel with a certain charm and character. Service and cleanliness was excellent, as was the food. My wife is Gluten and dairy free, and was catered for very well. The surrounding area is lovely as well, can't wait.

At one time when you wanted room service you would pull a cord or press a button in your room and the board which you thought was something to do with electricity would flash or move the symbol corresponding to the room number out in the corridor alerting staff on your floor. It's amazing the high number of staff these hotels used to employ especially during the season.
@johnwilkes76249 ай бұрын
I stayed there for free back in the late 1960's . Actually it was because I was working as a waiter . It was all silver service and even at breakfast time there were linen tablecloths . It was posh but coming to the end of it's heyday . At one dinnertime I was carrying a silver salver high up in the air , one handed , and fell to my knees . I kept my composure standing up again without spilling any food . All the guests clapped which broke the tension in the air from waiting . Tips were very good , one table of five or six leaving a five pound tip . Those were the days .

in case anyone hasn't mentioned it, the switch outside the bathroom is a timer, typically used for a towel rail. Currently in the Imperial Hotel in Barnstaple, wish I'd had brought my GoPro, it's a really old building that too has had a makeover and looking really good.

I lived in Cromer for quite a few years and always wanted a look round. You have finally done it for me.Thank you Fun little fact. They didn’t even used to close the pier even in bad weather until after 1993 when a rig that had broken loose smashed through it at night in a massive storm. My brother and I had been on the pier only about 30mins before it happened!
@itsdebs Жыл бұрын
That panel in the corridor was for the staff (back in the day) to know which rooms wanted a servant to attend to the occupants needs. A servant call board basically. What a grand old lady that hotel is!
@jamesfoster28508 ай бұрын
My parent's house had one of those - it wasn't a particularly big house (5 beds), but in the 30's middle class families often had a housekeeper/cook and there were bell buttons in the lounge/dining room and bathroom as well as 2 of the bedrooms. Ours was still in working order when my parents moved out in 2016. The coloured piece behind the glass used to move side to side when a button was pressed

Watching from my own hotel overlooking calm crystal blue waters, I'm actually missing that howling North Sea wind! Thanks Tim for staying and checking out this iconic hotel, I have very fond memories of holidays in Cromer and staying at the Paris. Good to see its in reasonable nick although not so decadent and grand as it once was but if coach parties are filling the place in March and helping to keep it maintained that has to be a positive. Note: Breakfast here is served 08:30 - 2pm. 😜

There is so much history encapsulated within this Regency era hotel. It's the only place I've learnt where you can watch the sun rise and set from the same place, all in one go! This 1820s historical wonder steeped in history reminds me of the hotel from the film "Somewhere in Time" for some reason. 😉 Beautiful timeless hotel surrounded by a coastal haven. Thanks, Tim!

@@nelliemelba4967 yh I have eyes and have seen the exact same footage as you. It's not the kind of hotel I would pay money for. Look at the windows, wallpaper and so on. Would you really pay to stay here???

@@nelliemelba4967 sure from the outside I just feel the inside is a little worn and rundown. As you say each to their own but I wouldn't pay to stay somewhere so unkempt and tatty. ✌️

definitely not for me! I think for £129, the room should be warm and the 8 am breakfast with no other choice [never seen that before] it sounds like they must have high occupancy. these things can change quickly.

I did my first summer season on Cromer Pier in 1978, and the cast was hired as extras for a TV show filmed outside This Hotlel; it starred Patricia Routledge (I think), but I can't remember the program if anyone out there knows or remembers that would be very helpful. Thank you for the memories great seeing the pier again after so many decades.

Lovely. I was born and bred in Cromer but left in the 80’s, fam all still there so visit often. As a local we never pronounced the S on the end of Paris and refer to it as the Hotel de Pari. Many an hour spent in the lounge bar as it was on our pub crawl route on the way to Crabs (the nightclub that was just over the way), now Lili Mai’s. I’ve never been in a room there so it was interesting to see. Thank you.

My parents lived in Watton and we would often go to Cromer. We saw the hotel being transformed over the years. We were also there the day of the storm that took a lot of frontage of the road to the right of the hotel and pier. The residents must of been terrified. But on a good day there is nothing quite like Norfolk, the sunrises are quite something.

There are tons of places I have not vivited in East Anglia but fortunately I have enjoyed a visit to Cromer and it is a lovely place. I'm not really a fan of modern hotels as I think they lack the carachter of Victorian ones and the hotel de Paris looks full of charm and is definitely somewhere I would stay. From outside it doesn't look too grand. Even inside feels like it leaves a lot to be desired especially in the realm of heating.
