I agree, for £725 a night I would expect far more. A proper fridge (on a stand or plinth) a mini bar (complementary). Far more modern furniture, a proper walk in wardrobe. Larger tv's. A far nicer cooked breakfast (no burnt toast) and a decent level of service for dinner (no excessive waiting between courses) Given the amount of people that I could see at dinner, the excessive waiting between courses was unforgivable and worthy of complaint. Nope, for that sort of money I would not be returning. (or even going! lol)

Your videos of the hotels you visit are very interesting to me. I am retired now but during my 40 year career in the hospitality industry I managed large hotels for thirty of those years in London, New York and Toronto mostly in the 4 star category. I know what the requirements are to achieve 5 stars. This hotel was nowhere near. The car parking arrangement was good but and the outside appearance of the building was beautiful. You should have been escorted to your suite by somebody and shown around. The furniture and fittings in the suite were far from 5 star. More like 3 star. The dinner service in the restaurant was abismal. 5 star service requires attentive and unobtrusive service. Totally lacking in this case. The English Breakfast looked dreadful, more akin to a greasy spoon cafe. This hotel are taking its guests for a ride. The £725.00 price tag would have been acceptable if the product matched the price, but for what you received was way too much. The General Manager should be ashamed of himself.

Hi Tim. I took my father to the Grand Hotel for a 10-day holiday back in 2008. Yes it is expensive but I wanted to give dad a luxury stay. The dinners were spectacular but after 10 days I was craving beans on toast! One thing I still remember are the really delicious scones that were freshly baked daily by the chef...fantastic. Sadly Dad passed away the next year, but I will always treasure memories of our stay at 'The Grand Hotel'. By the way, when we stayed there the furniture was very old and worse for wear, and it appears they upgraded the furniture after reviews mentioned that fact in the otherwise brilliant reviews.
@brandon2912t Жыл бұрын
So sorry for your loss, but you will always have that holiday to look back on and cherish those simple moments of just being together! I happened to spend the last year with both my parents before everything changed. Mum had dementia so I left my dream job to look after her as she would still have known if she had been put in a home and I had promised her when I was 16 that I would look after her, and ended up looking after both my parents. Sadly though after about 9 months, mum had to go into a home and dad soon after went into hospital, dad passed a few months later and mum passed during 2021 lockdowns. I always look back on that time as being my special time with them as I knew this was the last time I would be with them together. Wonderful memories of our last year! I wish you all the best:)

Thank you for your reply. I am very sorry for the loss of your parents. Our Mum died at home in 1982 from cancer, She was 61 years old. We, together with many thousands of family carers have shared the experience of looking after our loved ones at home so that they could remain in familiar surroundings for as long as they could. Looking back now, they were extremely special times and even though there were sleepless nights and distressing times near the end of our parents' lives, I feel privileged to have had that time with them. They had looked after me as i was growing up and i was just returning the favour, with love. I miss them every day and I would do it all again in a heartbeat. I wish you all the very best too.

What struck me as I watched this was that it's not actually hugely dissimilar from the 'worst rated' hotel in Scarborough 😅 it's got the same grand style, the same old furniture and decor etc. It's obviously been maintained better but I'm not sure if I'd consider it a 5 star hotel by modern standards. I feel like a lot of these places dine out on the vintage aspect of their hotels, but don't bring the standards in line with what people expect of a modern 5 star experience. We’ve stayed at The Grand 3 times. The most recent was 2 weeks ago in their recently-refurbished Superior Deluxe room. Much more modern decor and bathroom, and these rooms have A/C. There are 28 of these rooms which have been refurbished to a very high standard; presumably over the next few years they will gradually refurbish the remaining rooms, which are dated. We stayed in a junior suite once, and aside from being bigger, the decor and bathroom were the same as their standard room; hopefully, they’ll invest more in the decor with each step up in room grade - that would tempt me to book one of the higher-grade rooms. We paid £330 per night for dinner bed and breakfast - well worth it for the experience.

You can even spend a night in one of the historic towers out at sea or the old WW2 fortifications the Germans built when the islands were occupied.

Another Victorian throwback. Eastbourne seems to have retained its older residents and visitors so I think the hotel may reflect that. I've stayed in 1 five star hotel in Canary Wharf, try it for a comparison. It's very modern.

I believe the cider/wine mixture next to the fruit was placed next to the fruit to attract any fruit flies that maybe attracted to the fresh fruit. You mentioned it was still quite warm and fruit flies love ripening fruit and warm weather. They will be attracted to the fermenting scent of cider mixture and once the land in liquid, they will not be coming back out.

Wow, that was my favourite review so far. How interesting and how honest of you to say it wasn't worth it. I've never been to Eastbourne but I must say a lot of what you showed was very similar to The Imperial in Blackpool which curiosly isn't five star. Really loved this one thank you Tim

For someone who has anointed himself as a hotel inspector I would have thought he would know the difference between a hand/wash basin and a sink. One is found in a bathroom or bedroom and the other in a kitchen or laundry.

A hotel that truly lives up to its name 'Grand'! A lot of older hotels in the UK are not up to scratch, and haven't had the care put into it to update and maintain it, but this one is definitely the exception.

I worked in the only 5 star privately owned hotel in London during the 70s. The rooms had some antique furniture and valuable original paintings. One night some of the paintings “vanished” along with one of the guests and a staff member! - a collaboration Imv. So many stories from that place! 🙀 It’s now closed, such a shame - it was a beautiful old building.

The Grand at Eastbourne does still live up to its name. 90s furniture/feel, yes I agree but,, for me, it is in keeping with the hotel and very much the style I like. I am a pretty large eater but I usually find that the smaller portions of those haute cuisine meals are sufficiently filling. I take your point on the service, but a meal is such surroundings is not to be rushed! Value, for me, is a difficult one. (Incidentally, the 'final score', if I counted correctly, was WOWs 3, Randoms 1!)

The Grand at Eastbourne is a fabulous hotel. One of the very best I've stayed at and worked at and for. The standard rooms are excellent and the Debussy Suite amazing imo. Great staff and service on every occasion I've been there, either as a wedding photographer or as a guest. Always love your videos though.

Looked lovely, i do like the elegance of a by gone era, alot of modern hotels are all the same, minamalistic, clean lines etc, but it had quite alot to offer, and looked amazing from the outside 😊

Wow that's certainly an impressive hotel facade and the penthouse room was mostly fabulous - especially the bedroom and with great views from the balcony. In detail there are signs of staff/management complacency setting in with the juice bug , fridge on the floor and cobwebs in corridor. Although I think it was overpriced you looked as though you really enjoyed yourself there and I love your sense of adventure investigating all the maze of corridors and spectacular rooms. I hope these places don't get fussy about you filming everything!? External shots were also great. Well done Tim!! Super video again.

This is good to see again as I stayed at the Grand in 2001 with a group of work colleagues for several days…never imagining at that time, l would actually come to retire here in Eastbourne, which in itself, is a great place to live. During my career, I’ve probably stayed in as many hotels as you have to date…😉 My opinion of the Grand I’m afraid hasn’t changed…it was not 5 Star in any shape or form then + still isn’t now …In fact…it resembles an Agatha Christie Arsenic + Old Lace Murder Mystery Scene…+ the memory of that old musty smell, l can still recall today! 🤦♀️ You’ve been tactfully kind Tim + l look forward to your next destination…back to the 21st Century, l hope! 🤦♀️😅🤞😉

I was living in Eastbourne for 4 years at Teacher training college. I was enchanting with the sea. It's easy to criticise these older hotels but the history!. I have just spent 4 days here and have had a delightful few days in a hotel where I was a waitress. I went on a bus over the downs and what places to see. Loved it wouldn't have left except that there were lots of colleges and not enough jobs

Thanks for the video Tim. I think the apple cider vinegar in a jar is to catch the flies, although I've never seen that technique used in a hotel before. Moreover, it's definitely not worth over 700 quid for one night (I would never pay that much for one night) -- and the furniture looks like it's out of the 1950s (not the 1990s).

@@WalkWithMeTim Given that Mezcal from Mexico is bottled with a fat worm in the bottle... I wouldn't let a tiny fly stop me from trying a taste of whatever was in that glass. Was it cider vinegar to catch fruit flies? Seems odd to in a bottle be right there by the fruit dish, but while I've never experienced that in any hotel, fruit flies are no respecter of even penthouse suites, so maybe. The flies are insidious. I have a small electronic insect trap for when fruit flies get in my home, as they do occasionally... coming in with produce. They're hard to get rid of without some kind of trap.

Yes, there is a seaside hotel in Weekapaug, Westerly, Rhode Island I that you might enjoy and a lovely place for your wife and adorable son. And nearby there is The Ocean House, which is in Watch Hill. The atmosphere, decor, service, cleanliness and amenities of these places are probably more to your liking, also a bit pricey.

Hi Tim, I went into this hotel a few years ago. The room was so dated even then. The wardrobe doors had card wedged between them and when I took the card out the doors just kept opening. The bed was so soft and uncomfortable, that I checked out within half an hour. Wouldn’t stop there again. You’re a brave man. Cheers Dave

Glad to see this hotel hasn't changed much. Thank you. I was thinking of going to book afternoon tea just have a look at it for old times sake. When I was a child my dad's firm had their annual weekend conferences there. Delegates brought their families and so the atmosphere was busy and fun. I ate 3 course meals in that dining room with everyone else. Wish you had filmed in the children's playroom bit. There was also 2 television rooms down there, one for BBC and one for ITV. A big dinner dance took place on the Saturday night with a jazz band. Then a coach outing somewhere on the Sunday. . Good memories of a beautiful building.

Tim you’re always good value! Hi Tim I did like the hotel, and I didn't mind the older furniture. Perhaps cause I'm an older subscriber. My hubby would've wanted more food on his plate. Wouldn't have been enough. Reminds me a bit if when we used to holiday years ago as a family and stayed a lot in Trusthouse Forte Hotels. Nothing as big as that, bug the rooms catered for kids, and kids menu in the restaurant, but the vibe was very formal, and traditional and the facilities the same.
