The sink in the room is a throwback from before all hotel rooms had bathrooms. In fact, it was originally a mark of a better room until bathrooms became necessity and were carved out of corners or ends of rooms. It meant guests could wash hands, faces etc without having to visit the general lavatories. It would likely have replaced a wash-stand, essentially just a large bowl and were with cold water in and staff would have brought up hot water. People didn't bathe every day when these grand old hotels were built, so there only needed to be enough water for shaving and toilette.

It's got nothing to do with the council. It's owned by Brittania hotels. Get onto them as they refuse to upgrade or spend any money on it. They are quite happy for stag do's, hen parties and prossies to make use of it. Surprised it hasn't been given to asylum seekers as other once 4star hotels have around the country.

The crazy thing is that companies like Radisson and Malmaison have spent millions building hotels in the city in recent years and so the business is there. If Britannia invested similar sums renovating this it could be the finest hotel in the north of the UK. Their stupidity, short-sightedness, and downright disdain for customers knows no bounds.

The thing is it would probably be considerably cheaper to build a new hotel than put the funds into renovating and refitting a huge, old building like the Adelphi back to the luxury establishment it once was. Buildings from the early 20th Century are a nightmare to bring up to modern spec. Britannia would never make their money back. While Liverpool is a tourist destination, it doesn't attract the kind of clientele that would make it anywhere near profitable. In times gone by Liverpool was a major transatlantic passenger terminus, the Adelphi was once THE hotel that the rich and famous stayed in before departing on a luxury liner to the US (the Titanic was to have been based in Liverpool had she not sunk on her maiden voyage). That trade has gone and will never return and with it any hope that a business like the Adelphi could ever be sustainable.

I completely agree. Sadly, unless someone is willing to make huge financial losses, the building is unlikely to ever be brought back to pristine condition. Additionally, with the building being Grade II listed (with not only the public rooms but some of the bedroom features being detailed in the listing) any renovation is likely to be very time consuming and incredibly costly.@@mrbeast85

I let out a bemused "What?" when you opened the door of 467 and saw the security door - I've only seen those in empty properties to prevent people squatting, never in an actual hotel. And then when you opened the security door and the room was actually OCCUPIED, I almost screamed. The fact they gave you a key not just to the wrong room, but to a room that already had people in it, would really worry me. Your second room was pretty nice (period features left intact) although the bathroom window was grotty. Beginning to see a pattern in Britannia hotels where the public spaces (reception, function rooms, restaurants) are given the lion's share of attention and care and the further away you go from those spaces, the shabbier and sadder it gets.

Now as you can see, it's been well neglected by Britannia group. Fucking wankers don't deserve it, they just cash in on people coming to the city and knowing the history of the hotel without doing their homework. It's embarrassing that this shit company is allowed to run this hotel so improperly, and give people a bad impression of the city.

The thing is, they don’t run hotels, they buy property. They’ve got an amazingly beautiful building in a prime city centre location for a relatively low price, that just also happens to be a hotel. They halfheartedly run the hotel until it stops making a profit, and then sell it to a developer who would pay a colossal amount to get their hands on something like this they can turn into flats.

We have a similar company here in the states. They buy up shopping malls and do nothing with them until the mall is emptied out after a year or so. Not sure what the purpose is...Land? Yet it is strange to spend millions, and just let the building fall apart.

Instead that are just running them into the ground and slicing off as much of the profits they can. No doubt they will run them until they’re no longer inhabitable in the hope another company will take them off their hands or they’ll just abandon them leaving them as vacant eyesores. Very sad. They have been floating ideas about redeveloping them into flats before the pandemic and are now a government partner in housing refugees so they'll rinse the government for that then when that contract ends probably turn them into flats meaning they've invested virtually nothing into them . New carpets and paint is cheap in comparison to a full refurbishment

Whilst at work, There was what could only be described as “corruption allegations” of Britannia having contacts within the industry surrounding health inspections. You are correct about the Empire room. It is used for Masonic meetings. The Executive suite is actually another meeting room and not a bedroom. The second room you were given is actually a standard room. With 402 bedrooms nearly every room is different, with the exception of floors 5 & 6. A great hotel with so much history.

Horrifying. My Great Grandfather was a head chef at this hotel in the 40's & 50's when it was a real premium hotel, where the rich and famous would stay when catching a boat to America. I wasn't surprised when i saw it was now a Britannia....I worked at the Brit in Manchester in the 90's and even back then it was clear that this was a bargain basement business model designed to squeeze maximum profits from minimal effort.

The one in Manchester, was it the Piccadilly Britannia or Ringway nearer to the airport? I’ve stayed in both many times in the 90s. I loved the Ringway, the fake gold Buddhas everywhere against all the Victorian marble, the panelling etc fantastic. The swimming pool and gym were clean too. But the signs were it was going downhill then we noticed differences over the years especially cleanliness and maintenance. Worst thing is nightclubs some idiot always gets drunk walks out the fire exit at 2 am so by 2.05 you’re freezing in your pjs at the fire assembly point . This happened numerous times on multiple occasions

I watched this video a couple of months ago and now there is news of a young woman who was apparently crushed to death by a wardrobe in her room in this hotel. A shocking story and looks like it may be a case of negligence by the hotel although it is early days, so best wait for a proper investigation.

It's a shame, the Adelphi REALLY needs love, there is immense potential in the building. If one of the REALLY big hotel chains took it over, completely overhauled it and returned it to glory, that would be lovely to see. Its not the buildings fault, its the fact of mismanagement, abuse via bad customers, lack of pride, and staff disinterest.

Step one: Close off the areas in most disrepair. Scale the intake and running of the hotel to a level that is manageable by current staffing levels. Step two: Find the most profitable aspect of the hotel (I suspect it's the lobby and function rooms) and make it the focal point of generating income. Make it an executive experience worthy of a high-end price. Step 3: From the proceeds, carry out a basic maintenance of these profitable areas, and ringfence a portion that isn't for their upkeep to carry out a baseline repair of the immediately surrounding areas that are still open to the customers. Things like paintjobs, doors, windows and fixtures and bringing things up to code. Step 4: As this smaller, better managed hub thrives and builds a reputation of the hotel starting to turn itself around, invest in more cleaning staff. Have the manager personally check the standard of cleanliness of communal areas and vacant rooms the beginning and end of each day, with additional random spot-checks as their schedule allows. Provide anonymous feedback forms in each of the rooms and suites and staff areas. Step 5: For as long as it's profitable, any funds not maintaining/upgrading areas already in use and staff-levels and expertise, needs to be developing the closed-off areas in a targeted way. As before, the basics first, with a long-term view to integration and expanding the scope of the areas in use. As more of the hotel opens up, the pool of profit generated increases (as does the cost of upkeep), but with a staggered approach, revenue outpaces operating costs, and is spotted early when it doesn't. Currently the Adelphi is just existing. It doesn't excel, so it basically pays only enough to keep it operating at its current low standard, which doesn't account for the natural diminshment taking place over time. But reinvestment is a core part of making profit. The reputation of a hotel is predicated on what it makes and how much is reinvested. Not, enough and you see a decline in standards.Too precipitous a decline and you don't make any money to reinvest. So breaking that cycle of decline is all about exceeding the amount needed to simply exist, and making it so there are funds to reinvest - but they have to be reinvested, and in a way that's going to raise standards and turn a cycle of decline into a cycle of upwardly-increasing quality - in the hotel, the competencies of its staffing, and the services all of these provide. It's a big job, but it can be done.

Women’s restrooms, especially in Victorian times, were also lounging rooms where women could retreat. They could enjoy company of other women without men around and the pressures of those societal expectations. The actual lavatories were placed off side to these parlours and most also then had powder rooms, which were for retouching makeup and attending to your dress, etc. fancy establishments, or sometimes even some malls, will have our equivalent of these powder rooms which often have couches to sit on, and long benches with mirrors and sometimes sinks so that women can retouch their makeup and make sure they are looking how they wish before they then leave the restrooms.

The ladies restrooms had a big lounge area at the entrance where the ladies or children sat. (Waiting) for mum or resting or waiting for an hair appointment. as a coach driver i have stayed in that hotel many times with mixed reviews from my passengers. And i have had the same problem as you many times with them giving me the key card for a room that is already occupied. We switched hotels in the end. The doors opening into the corridor rather than into the rooms was supposed to help people get used to life on board ship as that hotel was used as an overnight stop before boarding cruise ships. I stayed there during International Beatles Week in 2018. Its actually a really interesting place and feels like it has been frozen in time. It needs a hell of a lot of TLC but it would be a shame to totally convert it into a soulless modern hotel. It has tonnes of character, it just needs some love! The Adelphi Hotel is another once magnificent Hotel that tugs at the Heartstrings! I find it so interesting reading the comments that the Hotel was built in a style so passengers going on the Titanic could get acclimatised to being aboard a Ship. Like the Hotel room doors opening outward & the Sinks in the posher Hotel rooms like you had. Just thinking that dingy small room that you were given first Tim that already had someone staying in it, might of been a room for the 3rd class passengers on the Titanic & your posher room you got upgraded to could of been for the 2nd or 1st Class passengers on the Titanic. As class was so important in those days & 1st class were kept well away from the 3rd class. All that old furniture left over from the 1800's & 1900's! Wish they'd repair that old Grand Piano, easy to imagine the 1st class types in that massive Dining Room probably listening to a string quartet playing music like on the Titanic. That Masonic room was fascinating looking the cleanest room in the Hotel, the Stairway in that room looked very tempting to go up! Lots of intriguing rooms to explore Tim, nice they weren't all locked like in some Hotels. Wish someone could invest into making this Hotel as luxurious as it was when it was built & incorporate the history of its relationship with the Titanic too, like a Hotel Museum.

Throughout the 20th century, the new Adelphi became a popular location for several politicians along with many other noteworthy celebrities. In the late 1940s, Prime Minister Winston Churchill was amongst some of the high-status visitors to stay at the hotel. Due to his fondness of the hotel he then went on to host strategy meetings at the Adelphi. Another Prime Minister to pass through the doors was Harold Wilson - whose preferred suite was later named after him and was kept virtually intact since his last visit. During World War II, the Adelphi narrowly missed being bombed in the Liverpool May Blitz of 1941, which saw many parts of the city centre ruined. Many foreign dignitaries, actors and pop stars including Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Bob Dylan have also been spotted at the Adelphi over the years. Iconic Liverpudlian star Cilla Black held her wedding reception at the hotel back in 1969. It was also rumoured that a 20-year-old Adolf Hitler worked at the hotel, however this has never been confirmed.

It's not beyond help at all. Structurally it seems like still a solid building. I see no subsidence cracking and noticably very little to none floorboard creaking. Doorframes still seem plumb. Tim says the ceiling is falling down but that's sensationalist talk as there is no damage to the plaster, only flaky paint which is a moisture issue and fixable. Flaking paint, doors need sanding and revarnishing and a bit of mould here and there to put right, but nothing that can't be fixed up. It does need the right owner to ensure it happens and things are kept up to standard, and Brittania IS NOT it. If the right owners come on board with enough cash and the right attitude, then that hotel absolutely can be brought back to it's former glory.

I was going to stop there with my wife in Aug 2021. We also got a room that was occupied and we did walk in on a couple who had clearly just "consumated their relationship." We went somewhere else and then moved to the Shankly. The Shankly I fully recommend.

That silver object at 17:35 is a nitrous oxide cannister. It's normally used to power air-riffles/paintball guns or small inflatable objects such as balloons. Unfortunately they are also used as a drug, given that nitrous oxide is the technical name for laughing gas. If you go to poor estates or bad parts of town, you'll find dozens pf these empty canisters littering the streets. The room at 19:20 is the barebones of a Masonic temple. I suspect one or more lodges probably rent this room to run masonic meetings and probably dine there as well. You might have spotted a "G" hanging above the center of the room. Very cool find, but you most likely should not have been in there, and this should have been locked, fortunately everything else appears to have been removed/stored away. (Source: Me, a Freemason).

It was effectively banned even if it was the cheapest in the area. I stayed here over 10 years ago. They made us pay for the room up front before allowing us to check in. The shower didn't work, the lights didn't work, the carpet was stained, there was no heating. You could tell that it was once a very beautiful hotel back in the day, but had been left to decline over the years I stayed only one night...

I stayed here 15 years ago with my mum and got ‘Shining’ vibes then. Going back to Liverpool with my husband in February, I wanted to stay here for this whole experience. This place has a real atmosphere, it’s actually amazing. The deserted, unkempt elements only add to the experience. I think if you are looking for a carefree stay, or like to pretend you are a contestant from ‘four in a bed’, maybe don’t book here. However, if you are looking for a unique, memorable stay, I would say give it a go. So many old hotels have been modernised beyond recognition, I would take this crumbling old ruin any day. As it was our first holiday since 2019, I ultimately decided against it, but I would like to think we will stay here next time we go.

If I found out I’d been given someone else’s room, I’d be straight out of a hotel. I’d be too fearful of a stranger walking in on me. I’ve had a staff member walk into my room unannounced and uninvited while I was in the shower and 9 years later I’m still nervous about showering in hotels. That happened in a Britannia hotel funnily enough - one in London though. The same hotel that had three chefs desperately struggling to come up with a meal option for me that was vegetarian and didn’t contain nuts or onions (I’m allergic).

I am from Liverpool and live in Liverpool, I am in my early 50s and I remember my mum and nan talk about the Adelphi hotel, believe it or not this hotel was the grandest and most expensive hotel in Liverpool, the Queen has stayed there and many many famous celebrities over the years, it's very sad to see how it is now, this could be once again the best hotel in Liverpool, I would love to see it like it was again, I used to play Chess at this hotel in the 90s, not my club, but Liverpool Chess club used to play at the Adelphi, I enjoyed playing there and easy for me to get home as the train station is less than 5 minutes away. Maybe if I win the Euro millions, I might buy it and make it great again.

I love Liverpool for a city holiday break, done it twice now. On our second visit my friends and I have an amazing cream tea at this lovely hotel prepared by two ladies in the fabulous lounge area, we still talk about it today. The way people holiday has changed so much over the years, when hotels like the Adelphi were built to accommodate the vast number of wealthy travellers who holidayed in the UK. Now they survive on coach parties and stag and hen parties, otherwise they wouldn’t even be open.

Charles Dickens actually stayed there numerous times and it was said to be his favourite hotel in the North of England. Cunard passengers used to stay there before being taken to the docks to board these luxury liners heading to America.

The restaurant had a food hygiene standard rating of zero for a while and they were forced to change else they'd be shut down. I stayed in this hotel after a Liverpool match back in 2004 it was £100 per double room and worth every penny back then. I spent the night in their once beautiful piano bar and had a great nights sleep. I don't think that I would even pay £10 a night to stay there now. There should be some kind of law forcing companies to upkeep these beautiful old historic buildings.

In the early 1970s when I worked as a reporter in Liverpool I often met and interviewed people at the Adelphi - and before I moved to Fleet Street spent a last night there with a girlfriend. It was always romantic and glamorous - and never more so than the Grand National weekend. Of which the highlight was the dinner on the Saturday night, with the winning owners, trainer and jockey plus lots of stars and celebs - and the top table centrepiece was decorated in the winner's colours. So sad to see it so dirty and decaying. It needs a new owner with deep pockets to buy it and fund a complete restoration.

As someone who has stayed there built as a cruise hotel for ships going from Liverpool then took over by British rail. The bedrooms with the wash basins in the bedrooms are for first class passengers when a cruise hotel and also the hotel as a few penthouse suites as well and was based on the titanic. Fact the hotel is hurneted with 4 ghosts and the hotel is grade 2 listed.

Love your videos mate, I never stayed there, but I have performed a few murder mystery shows at the hotel, we were usually given a random place to set up and store props etc, some places were like that masonic room in your vid, it was always fascinating walking around and finding grand furniture and Victorian/Edwardian decor, some places were pristine compared to the rest of the hotel. I know that Charles Dickens stayed at the Adelphi many times, he described it as one of the best hotels in England, he often did reading tours of his novels for a penny a ticket, and performed at St George's hall, just a couple of minutes away from the hotel. Apparently he stayed at the Adelphi whenever he was on tour in the northwest area. It's so sad that a building as rich in history as the Adelphi is rotting away before our very eyes.

I've been waiting for you to do this one in my home city Tim. Locals know to avoid this place generally to stay and with good reason. The kitchens were regularly receiving 0 hygiene rated scores for years on end. The swimming pool had chewing gum stuck on the side of it but swimming facilities in the health club were a very reasonable £4 a day for walk ins so I did chance that and got chatted up by some very random blokes over the years. All good though🤣 In the 1990's I was a regular at the 'Fridays' night club and Dance Bar (sounds so 90's!) & the pub is still open but a shadow of its former self as all 3 used to get busy. My Mum and Nan used to go for cream teas in there back in the day. Before that, the swimming pool was originally used as a turtle pool for the poor creatures that ended up in their once famous soup.😪🐢🤮

As far as the rooms are concerned a handful of rooms should be cordoned off and revamped and cleaned thoroughly at frequent periods then rotate the cycle some so the upkeep will be kept on top. This will improve the hotel on a budget but also give the hotel a better rating, there are lots of ideas at a low cost which would improve those hotel bedrooms dramatically, Housekeeping staff need to come up with a better system also, chalk paint on furniture can also give a classy look not a tacky look

I spent a night in the Hard Days Night Hotel in Liverpool for my brother's wedding and it was fantastic, the room was immaculate, absolutely spotless and very very comfortable and the staff were amazing. If you're ever in Liverpool I highly recommend the Hard Days Night Hotel.

I stayed here when attending my friends ( first) wedding in 1979. The wedding was elsewhere, I was skint so this was a cheap hotel. It was much the same as you show 43 years later. So it seems it’s heyday much have been the fifties when it would have been around fifty years old? Whatever business model made it work then doesn’t allow it to work now. I would guess it employed armies of in-house carpenters , painters,launderers , seamstresses, chambermaids, cleaners of every description ( coal fires in some rooms?), as well as those catering in bars and dining. All those trades would have been paid a pittance compared with the second halt of the 20century and later. Fascinating. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay. A real treat!

I had the misfortune of staying in this over 20 years ago. Rooms and the corridor were never cleaned (The room opposite me had put out pizza boxes with a cigarette placed on top. The cigarette had been lit then left to burn so it was it tower of ash. During my stay, the pizza boxes and ciggy never moved.) The restaurant often ran out of cutlery during breakfast. Hotel staff skulked around the tables stealing any knives, forks or spoons from guests, giving them a quick wipe with a tea towel then handing them out to other customers. I never ate anything in the place and made sure I bought a sleeping bag, towels etc after the first night. I got out of there as soon as I could arrange it, On the opposite side of the hotel to your room (If I got my bearings right) there used to be a chip shop that made the most amazing cheese pies. (Edited for typos. It's late here)

The Hotel was for many years owned by The LMS Railway ( and the Midland Railway before it) Was sold of by British Railways ( It was a British Transport Hotels Group Hotel) in the 80's. The Midland Hotel in Manchester was also owned by BR and is now privately owned ( Not by Brittania Hotels) and refurbished.

You missed the Sefton suite on your right as you walk into the main lobby. It is an exact replica of the titanics smoking suite. Also room/suite 100/101 is were Frank Sanatra, Bob Dylan, Franklin Roosevelt, Churchill, Harold Wilson, Judy Garland and many others stayed

When my wife's terminal illness prevented us from holidaying abroad we took lots of mini breaks all over the UK. At one time Britannia offered some attractive half board deals. However within a very short time the " cheap and cheerful" soon turned into dirty and disgusting. I believe 2 Asian gentlemen snapped up more than a dozen dilapidated Victorian era hotels and then ran them into the ground. They were then on the verge of bankruptcy but obtained new finance, however they didn't change their business model and still run the chain on a shoestring. They also own the Pontin's holiday camps which is another unmitigated disaster.

That’s totally shocking. The Adelphi used to be so prestigious. It was the place your parents aspired to go to for Xmas dinners, weddings and other celebrations. You used to walk past it in silence and awe. It should be stopped allowing a prestigious hotel going downhill like that. That bath has had a coating to make it look better and now the coating is coming off. There’s no excuse for the place not being clean. The extra sink seems to be from when a room would only have a basin and not an en suite. It seems that they’ve split a room to make an en suite. It’s probably a good thing that it’s clad in marble or those walls would be disgusting as well. The Adelphi was the place that transatlantic travellers would stay before setting off on liners to go to the States. It replicated the standards they’d be expecting to see on the ships. I hope that someone buys the hotel and does it justice, like the old St Pancras hotel. Why Liverpool thinks it’s OK that building glorified multi-storey car park type buildings everywhere, ruining the view of the 3 graces, is good enough when the prime hotel of the city is left to rot and be a reputation ruining dump, goodness only knows.

The owner of Britannia hotels needs locking up for what they’re doing to this amazing building and probably others across the country. Making a fortune letting hen and stag parties ruin the place, they’ve already had massive finds for food hygiene and the council has been in many times giving the place 0 ratings.

Just read that someone died in one of their hotels a few years ago how is the company still going, i worked in a hotel that was founded in 1828 and it was far more maintained then this one and only had two maintenance staff they still pulled it off

I recently attended a wedding at the Adelphi.The wedding chapel and service was excellent and the function room for the reception was one that you visited. They dressed it very well and the meal was very good. We stayed over and the breakfast buffet was also very good. The hotel wedding organiser,Jane, did an excellent job throughout. Your report was honest and accurate. It is sad that such a grand hotel has been allowed to decline. It is so large that the cost to keep it up to date is obviously to much for Britannia. It would be great if a few million could be spent to bring it back to it’s former glory but that type of hotel has had it’s day. People want the modern short stay Premier Inn style today. Tony.

The metal canister is nitrus oxide , it’s a drug that people inhale to get a 30 second buzz, such a shame such a unique hotel and people ruin the character :/

Those Nitrous cannisters are fucking everywhere in Liverpool! They're like Mushrooms, you spot one and you immediately seem to see millions more without trying.
