I think you missed part of the commentary the movie was trying to make in its second half. This isn't just humanity letting their planet die, but forfeiting their humanity to a corporation that has fully taken over every aspect of their lives. One of the parts of the second half I really liked that disturbed me was when the kids were being taught not by their parents, but by the corporation. It's supposed to show how the humans have given themselves up completely to a corporation, and how scary corporations can be if they obtain too much power. The point of seeing Wall-e and Eve's romance was to show the ironic nature of two robots acting human, while all the humans acting robotic. Because the robots have lived in a wasteland, they've learned to value more sentimental things, which makes them the perfect protagonists to bring that sentimentality back to the humans again. It's not just a story about humans keeping their planet clean, but also not letting a corporation take over humanity. I do think the message is pretty clear though when you first see inside the ship, but the part I feel is compelling is seeing just how far humanity has fallen, and the great lengths the corporation has gone in taking over humanity.

There's actually ANOTHER message to the second half. If you watch the trailer for the movie, you may notice that the narrator describes WALL-E's personality as a glitch. An imperfection in his programming. Just about every robot in the movie is capable of some form of expressiveness, but on the Axiom, it's often suppressed or hidden because it's considered something to correct, something to fix or remove. EVE also has her own personality prior to meeting WALL-E, but she kind of hides it from her superiors. When she arrives on Earth, she only takes off into free flight to "stretch her wings" when the rocket leaves. She's fully aware that she can't show her true colors when she's monitored, or she'll be considered faulty. Another example is the broken bots in the repair ward. They can't do their primary jobs because they're malfunctioning, but they have far more personality than their peers. WALL-E is even deemed a hero when he frees them by accident, and they help him and EVE in getting the Axiom back to Earth. Even M-O, the cleaning bot, contributes to this. He followed his protocol to a T, and was committed to it, even willing to risk deactivation and go beyond his restricted path in order to get his job done when WALL-E started leaving dirt trails everywhere. He demonstrates the choice to go beyond a strict ruleset to get work done when necessary, and how that's a genuinely healthy thing. Going beyond what's asked of you and exploring the unfamiliar if it means completing your mission. WALL-E's brokenness, his free will, IS the hidden message of the story. WALL-E's sentience and proactive nature is the key to bringing humanity back. Humans on the Axiom are largely just... existing. They're not truly living. They're letting an automated system live FOR them. But WALL-E's had seven hundred years to live, and he ends up spreading that gift to everyone else, especially EVE, who already had her own sentience, but didn't have much opportunity to show it freely. The movie's usage of machines to portray personality as some sort of glitch or imperfection isn't just clever. It's the whole point. Because that's what free will is. The ability to choose, act, and live is meant to be imperfect, because while it does allow us to be inactive, or even choose evil, it also allows us to pursue what's good in the world. It's better to be able to choose good OR evil than to have no say in the matter at all, to potentially contribute something of value than provide nothing. We are meant to be broken and flawed, because if we were completely perfect, we'd just be mindless machines that couldn't do anything. WALL-E's message is about embracing the root of humanity: The beautiful imperfection of one's free will. It's about using your ability to choose to better the world around you, and how pursuing and working towards something truly good can positively affect those around you, even when you don't realize it. That's what makes WALL-E so timeless. It works on SEVERAL levels. It's not just a love story. It's not just a cautionary tale about the dangers of an automated society, or mankind's responsibility to care for its natural home. It's a story that shows the positive consequences of being alive and active. Imperfection is necessary, even when society might consider it something to be fixed. People are imperfect because they're allowed to choose. We're supposed to be that way. Imperfection is life. And life is wonderful.

WALL-E is still my all-time favorite movie. Like Lindsay/the Nostalgia Chick said, WALL-E's environmental message works because at the end of the day, it's still about WALL-E and the love he has for EVE, to the point where it's because of that love that motivates the rest of humanity to actually doing something with their lives! That being said, Andrew Stanton (director of this movie as well as Finding Nemo) originally wanted little to no dialogue in this movie and have it just be about WALL-E and EVE. He wanted Earth to be abandoned and honestly didn't care about where they were or what happened to them, but figured some audiences would probably want to know. Not to mention he had to find a reason for WALL-E and EVE to go into space... Which originally was so that they'd encounter gelatinous alien creatures when later evolved into highly evolved humans which then turned into the obese humans of this movie. What's interesting about the autopilot (called Auto in this movie) is that it's left ambiguous whether or not it is just following orders or if it just wants to stay in control. I believe Andrew Stanton wanted it to be just following orders, to make it a dark parallel to WALL-E and what he does to EVE and humanity and the robots on the ship as a whole. I buy that, too, though there are some fans who prefer to think the other way. And the live action bits? Well they're there because Hello Dolly was in the movie, simple as that.

He's more referring to the fact that she's equipped with an ion cannon at all, not just how she uses it on the boats. But I think she's equipped with that to protect herself (or even plant life) from any hostile organisms that could have potentially manifested on Earth while mankind was away, like a mutant creature in Fallout or something. Or better yet, it might be an unnecessary, even reckless upgrade that the Axiom's AUTO-pilot system gave to the EVE units, that just runs the risk of damaging Earth even further. Of course, that might not matter to AUTO, since, as far as he's concerned, Earth is long gone, so he might think there's nothing of value to destroy.

Actually it is kind of a place for fun and games, to a certain extent of course. The areas populated by the public are meant to be like a wonderland of high-tech, leisure, and convenience. For me i loved the 2nd half, and i got the message being 8, is not just the typical "humans damage the environment" or "corporation bad" at least, not just that, is also "don't let technology dominate your life" when you see those humas, technology takes every second of their lives, and that made them fat and not aware of their surroundings, they don't enjoy life (then don't hate it either) but they live if a perpetual state of "meh, its okay", the part I most remember is when Wall-e moves one of them out of the chair and then she/he disconnects from the technology, and is like a new world.

I even think it's scary to watch: Humanity destroyed the earth, became fat and weak, their life is only digital with no real interaction, and their lives are completely controlled by one huge company! The scary thing is, something similar might happen to us... That's why I think the second half is super interesting, but also a little uncomfortable and scary. Of course the humans are all the same, that's the point! Since their lives are controlled, they lost their individuality!

I grew up watching this movie and the one single problem I have with it is that Wall-E didn't take his cockroach buddy with him. Easily the best comic relief character I've ever seen in a movie. He didn't have any dialogue and had absolutely no facial expressions whatsoever. The way he interacted with Wall-E and the relationship that they clearly had was beautiful, cute, and hilarious. The way a comic relief and main lead relationship is supposed to be. With no dialogue with one, and little to none with the other, they definitely made me laugh way more than any other comic relief duo ever (then again I was still little and watching Dora the Explorer so whatever).

Seeing films is there job so they see a lot of them, and that causes them to start seeing movies differently, they see certain patterns and themes multiple times so it can get a little boring. @spacecocaine18239 жыл бұрын
+Kaybee Do you think animated movies have gone downhill graphically since WALL-E? Just wondering from a professional's opinion :D
@22kaybee229 жыл бұрын
In a technical sense no, the technology is always improving. But I haven't seen it used in the same way cinematically so it's hard to compare. Some games have a similar look and feel. I still count 'Up' as an equal to 'WALL-E' but its strength is in less of the insane detailing and more in character design, animation, and art style. The look of the humans is a noticeable step up. I suppose it's too broad a subject to comment on? And that's good. As long as films are focusing on what strengthens their own story rather than trying to one up another's look, I'm happy.
@22kaybee229 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on the story you're telling. Sometimes all you need is a one dimensional character to walk you through a vast world. But I'm not saying WALL-E didn't have any focus at all on character. The way they designed binoculars to show so much emotion is incredibly impressive. I'm just saying it's difficult to compare the technical side of WALL-E against other films that went for other stylistic choices or focused on other things. Not necessarily character design, but ice effects or water or curly hair or strong poses, all of them using different technologies. It's like comparing a photograph to a pop-up book. I guess my opinion is that cinematic graphics has improved, but WALL-E is currently the best use of the given technology to present that particular story.

+Plague Doctor Personally, I think video games trumps all other mediums. About your points on the second half. I feel that the plot for either of the two alternate stories you suggested would be constrained or cheesy, and the live action is meant to show just how far humanity has deteriorated. The ship is MEANT to be shallow and not meaningful, because otherwise why wouldn't we follow in the movies footsteps? I also like the way that they show more than just the pollution, and they actually display the side effects of abandoning earth.

I absolutely adore this movie. Hell it's my favorite movie of all time. I love the characters, I love the story, I love the romance, I love the comedy, I love the writing, I love the music, I love the sound design. I just think it's the perfect movie. Not every movie is perfect as I think the villain is a little bit weak but aside from that this movie is just great. I just love it. I feel bad when people don't like the second half as while it's not as great as the first I think it's still great all the way through. Nothing else can beat WALL-E for my all time favorite film. Not even The Dark Knight or Slumdog Millionaire (the eventual winner for Best Picture for 2008), The music by Thomas Newman is some of his best. I love his work and this is one of my favorites. The sound design is some of the best in a movie I've seen. This was done by sound design legend Ben Burt. Who did Star Wars, Indiana Jones and E.T. I love the sounds of these robots and he absolutely hits bullseyes. The characters are extremely likable and memorable, especially the robots. I love their personalities. And it's through the body language and expressions that make them work very well. The dialogue is the best I've ever heard. Just as charming as Annie Hall but dialed up to a million. The pacing is absolutely done well. The animation is top notch. Some of Pixar's best. The expressions, the atmosphere, the backgrounds, the foregrounds, the objects, the characters, it's just absolutely great. The romance and chemistry is perfect. They don't go with the cliches you think they're going to go, it's absolutely perfect and it's just delightful and sweet. The comedy is also great. I'm not laughing but I'm charmed by the comedy in the movie and there is a giggle here and there. I just love it. I can't say anything more to say that this film is my all time favorite film. Nothing else is ever going to beat it. I love it and I will still love it for all eternity.

Red of Overly Sarcastic Productions summed up this movie best - it’s not just about the environment, it’s also about doing what you think is right & growing beyond your programming/expectations. WALL-E does their job, but they also collect cool junk, listen to music, have a pet cockroach, and make friends wherever they go. And the robots in the Repair Ward weren’t necessarily broken (except maybe that one massage bot - that guy probably killed some folks) - they just don’t conform with the rest of the bots. Like the vacuum with dust allergies & the makeup bot who gave makeovers to other bots instead of people.

Fun trivia - you can synch up Wall-E with Pink Floyd's album 'The Wall'. Makes for a really fantastic audio/video experience.

Critic, you say these humans in the second half aren't interesting. They're not supposed to be interesting. It's what they have become which is less than human. Their technology has taken the humanity from them and they've just become blobs. What happens in the end shows their humanity restored. And that's awesome!

One thing I really liked, and what I really admired is how far Wall-E would go just to make Eve happy and give humanity a second chance. Hell, he's super brave and sacrifices greatly for his friends even though he doesn't need to. And that sort of loyalty and bravery is always something I admire greatly, and most of my heroes follow the same curve. (Ex. Danny Phantom, Astro Boy [From the movie], Norman from ParaNorman, Anna from Frozen if you will, etc.) I always get kinda sad when people don't acknowledge what Wall-E did for the others because those characteristics are always what I loved most in Wall-E. (Except it kinda does break your heart to watch one of your favorite little robots almost get crushed to death)

The real life humans are supposed to show the contrast to the CG humans and show how far humanity has fallen that we don't even look "human" anymore!!

On rewatch the second part was a lot more bearable for me. I used to be on the group of people that like the beginning and thought the rest was ok, but now i think the first part is amazing and the rest is really good as well.

I am sort of in the middle. I do love the movie from beginning to end, and by that I mean REALLY love, but I this could've easily been so high on my top movies list if they had left it on earth. The second half sort of becomes this typical goal-based story structure, and I think it would've been much more beautiful if they hadn't done that and just did something mysterious and quiet

This movie was a bizarre experience for me because it came out when I was eight and I didn't see it in the theatre. What basically happened was that I remember some friends hyping it up when I was a kid and I was mildly disappointed when I saw it months later. After watching it as a teenager, I appreciate it and enjoy it a lot more. I remember feeling as a kid that it was preachy and slow, which I don't really feel now. Maybe this wasn't for kids? I don't know.

Watch Burn e. It's a short film about a robot on the Axiom trying to replace a lamp. Every time it does this though, it keeps being interfered with because of the events of Wall e, which is when the film is set. Very clever, very funny and works so well with the main film.

The first half of the movie could have been a short, and the rest could have been a sequel.

Wall-E is my favorite Pixar movie. The story, animation, and characters are all amazing. The second half isn't quite as good as the first, but it's still really good :)
