When you talked about how it's wrong about people becoming sedentary when their needs are met - Gene Roddenberry nailed this 60 years ago! Star Trek is a post-monetary post-scarcity realistic utopia in which people strive to learn and excel simply because when the first two layer's of Maslow's Hierarchy are met with sufficient dependability, the vast majority of people will focus on the other three rather than sitting around letting themselves rot.

I'd love to see them do some Trek for this series.

Note this film started before Pixar was purchased by Disney. They were still under Jobs as ceo, and directly linked to Apple. So the iPhone and App Store were being developed alongside this film. This was one of the last films Steve Jobs supervised and produced at Pixar. This also was one of the first film ideas they had in the 90s.

Love this program. Max, Halle, and Lovett should start a new movie review podcast. I love to hear Halle give here opinions. She is smart without being full of herself.

I don't think the fatness comes off offensive because the movie explicitly shows that it's a symptom of the technology.

Yeah im fat and im not offended because i know if you're in space,you'll have more adipose tissue and bone shrinkage. It was also necessary for everyone on the ship to be overweight so they didn't need as much calories, we see that everyone is drinking what is basically nutritional shakes, which means they recycle everything and everyone on the ship because theres no replicator.

38:51 theres a scene in the mandelorian where the robots want to be apart of human society, they want to work WITH humans instead of killing them, a robot's purpose is what they're programmed to do, which is what they are specifically modeled for.

was literally talking about this yesterday in the context of how our need for convenience has forked us.

Pedantically, Hello Dolly is not a Fred Astaire movie, it was directed by Gene Kelly.

I’d definitely say Pixar is still at the forefront of filmmaking and the leader in animation, dominating all studios especially this year. But maybe movie don’t have the focus in our culture they once had. Similarly Apple is the pinnacle of innovation, but tech is just not as special as it used to be in the zeitgeist. Process doesn’t appear to happening at the pace it once was.

18:14 there's ai programs that help translate whale song, so at least it would make animal language easier to understand, and by extension alien language.

I do love about Wall-E that's we're supposed to relate more with the machines and the humans are more machine-like. Unfortunately today's robots, designed by society's most wealthy corporations, function only to mine data and extract wealth from working people. I think it speaks volumes about our priorities as a society that the forefront of our technological development is directed to cannibalize humanity's wealth into a select few instead of: 1. Lessening human suffering 2. Meeting basic needs 3. Repairing and preserving our natural environment Human pride and ego is what's driving profit over progress.

John should tell his viewers how much money he made in 2018 working for the pro-insurance industry nonprofit called “United States of Care” to explicitly fight against M4A and propagandize for pro-business friendly ACA policies.

It's objectively nuts to me to consider that Wall-E is as far back in the past for us now.....as the year *_1991_* was when Wall-E was released. I'm obsessed with doing these little time/math comparisons. And it's almost always deeply depressing lol. But sometimes it's quite amusing. Like finding out Flava Flav and Albert Einstein were once alive at the same time. Yes, I made that one up. >_< But only because I couldn't remember the true, and equally surprising, examples.

I am tired of people anthropomorphizing their pets. It’s becoming sad.
@lornam363717 күн бұрын
But pets are animals like us so it shouldn't be surprising they do have very similar feelings. I guess the problem is that society tells us the rest of the animal kingdom is to be exploited and therefore there is no space to consider that animals might plan, form family and friend groups, feel fear, recognise simple human language and have their own. Then people get a dog and are amazed when they realise that the dog is way closer to them in nature than they imagined - and then they try to tell the world. And of course, that's where you come in - bored to death by their stories and photos of their pet. Probably you're equally bored by their stories about their human offspring too.

@ I apologize, if your feelings were hurt. Animals aren’t people.
