Wallace Practice Mutes: The Studio and The Compact Practice Mute

Two very effective practice mutes are demoed here. I prefer the Studio, but it may require an extra layer of padding to fit your trumpet or cornet. I address this, and also try to show how the volume of these mutes works in an ordinary room with ordinary sound. Hope this is helpful to you. :)

Decided on this M17 due to your review, after watching dozens of video on many different mutes. Subed as well. Just got one. I am confounded as to how this little jewel can cut 30 db's from my trumpet with so little back pressure and so little effect on attenuation. Magical. 100% satisfied. Thank you, Jonathan!

My pleasure. Good idea; very much appreciated. With the right fit, Wallace mutes are very nice. There are some vids of Adam Rapa playing Wallace mutes; those are great vids. :)

In my Xeno the blue Wallace fits very well. No tweaks on the rubber end are necessary.

Hi Jonathan. Thanks for your very good demonstration. In similar situations I have been using my old Denis Wick practice mute. It's OK, but still too loud at times when a very quite time is needed, and it has a lot of resistance and changes the pitch. I appreciate the tips on customizing the regular Wallace practice mute. I think that is what I will do after I purchase one.

Glad it helped! I've had mine for years and, for me, it's the best of quiet with liveable back-pressure. With the stem removed, it's a bit louder and I feel no back pressure at all. All in all, the best practice mute I've had. But... I purchase others whenever I get a chance for a used one at a good price. @@JonathanMilam1 Thanks Jonathan for your reply. Very good video! My biggest complaint about other practice mutes was the back pressure, slotting and pitch issues. I saw the Adam Rapa video and he sounded great on the Wallace mute. Take Care...

Great video as always Jonathan. Your volume drops off at about 3:00 though to an almost inaudible level.
