Both dogs are still alive and hate to be apart for any amount of time. They live in a different house with less stairs but both are still climbing the ones that are there. Wally turns 11 this year.

My Bassett hound puppy is 5 months old. I am very careful about not letting her on the stairs to protect her back and leg joints. Also I try to not let her jump off the furniture.

There should be few Basset owners who are not aware of cabriol legs in the Basset. Stairs and steps are an absolute 'no no 'until the dog reaches maturity.

I know people try to be helpful but... Have you ever *owned* a Basset Hound? Even without encouragement, they WILL climb stairs - especially when something smells interesting up there. It's the coming down part that scares the hell out of me - pretty much jumping their way down! We have a gate in front of ours, mostly to prevent Orrie and Ottz from getting into trouble, and I can understand the concern for their health. That said, from my observation, the BEST way to keep a Basset healthy is to keep their weight down... Which is REALLY HARD. Their ears hear every wrapper opened, and their noses can smell food at the other end of the house!

I'm pretty sure that now Walley's zooming in those stairs, Hector my basset hound is very athletic he doesn't have any trouble climbing on the couch headrest to get to the window ledge where he lies like a cat and can howl at strangers.

We had a basset who used to go up and down stairs like a champ. After a year, he had developed a herniated disc. We had to have three of his vertebrae fused and he never could walk the same again.

We're getting our new basset hound next week and we were told to avoid stairs especially when they are young and if possible only 3 or 4 steps from time to time at most. Vet told me to avoid stairs as much a possible. Basset Hounds are not meant for stairs and they can get injured

I have a Sussex Spaniel who is also very long. Stairs and steps are a big challenge. If he doesn't get the jump quite right on a step he risks banging his pecker😞

I thought it was ok for them to sometimes do stairs, as my girl managed them quite well...... but when her back end gave way and she couldn't walk it was awful, and I wasn't in a position to cope at that time, and so I had her put down .... I will feel bad about it until the day I die. ..... I wish I had made the other dog stay downstairs with her, instead of encouraging her to come up with us ... :( .... just saying !

The dog is several years past this video and keeping up with that terrier at the new house. The 3 other basset hounds that lived in that house over the decades had no back or hind end issues. Maybe the angle of the camera is making everyone freak out a bit much. IDK.
