These could be very young players, and young players think more along real world realities or even aesthetic qualities rather than game efficiency: In the real world it would be quite amazing to have a totally walled shore. And multi-layered defenses are quite realistical. I recently showed the game to my 9 year old daughter, we played Japanese, and when we got to feudal age she complained that I did not put the mill next to the river, because the Japanese mill is a watermill and should thus be fueled by the river. THIS is how these players might think: It's more about immersion and less about competetiveness.

Now THIS is my kind of game. None of that "trying to win quickly" bs, actually playing the game for the sake of enjoying playing it. Not rushing to try and beat the enemy by 20 minutes, instead focusing on experiencing all that the game has to offer, every era, getting into grand fights and forting up, really seeing the different players' towns bloom. Sure that's bad if you want to just win ASAP to increase your ELO as fast as possible and get recognition as a skilled player, but if you actually want to play the game for fun it's about a thousand times more entertaining imo. I will watch walled islands fighting each other any day over some 15 minute win amazing super rush.

I used to wall my islands... in Age of Empires 1. The reason I did it was so the AI transport ships wouldn't have anywhere to land, so they wouldn't puke out troops in weird places when getting destroyed. It doesn't work if you don't wall the very edge, because that just means an entire transport ship of Egyptian War Elephants is going to land on the little outcrop instead of dying. Still a general waste of resources though. Even more so, considering I liked to use towers instead of walls.

I actually did this on a ranked game where the island was in the top-left corner and was with korean that can shoot far enough from towers. If they attack it they lose endless ships, but only good if island is small-enough.

Portos is actually the name of one of french writer Alexandre Dumas' "Three Musketeers". He's the jolly one of the bunch, always looking for a good meal,, good wine and a good fight (in that order). Don't know if it's an actual reference though :)

This is my favorite game mode, 3 fishing ships and put all those spare villagers on wood, gold, stone, in that order and you can CRANK out the units.Pincer landing parties, unload villagers and build a few towers or a castle on the far bank. absolute blast of a map
