These MF’ers came on the scene and dropped ONE album in 1998 and it’s one of the most important electronic/break-beat records of all time. Every single song is a banger and has been licensed in so much media in the late ‘90s and 2000s - The Matrix, Wipeout for N64, and the very first iPod commercial to name a small fraction.

I think genre plays a part; Propellerheads were part of the Big Beat scene which was always rather big on combining samples from older songs to make something new, so naturally if any genre was going to be combined with an old Shirley Bassey song it was going to be this one. A similar example of this effect would be Junkie XL' remix of A Little Less Conversation by Elvis Presley. I think the oldest version I can think of where an old song got modernised quite well was the synth version of Music for the Funeral March of Queen Mary that got used in A Clockwork Orange. A good example of the formula put in reverse that I quite like is Crazy in Love by Swing Republic which is an Electro Swing cover of Crazy in Love by Beyonce. Of course this rule isn't 100% true as there are genres that aren't sample based that still combine well with older genres. In recent years it's become clear that Drum and Bass goes pretty well with Rock music. In short, there will always be genres that blend well together, and discovering those genres is all part of the fun :D.

Listening to this as a response to hearing that Trump has won the US election. It reminds me that this is what 'history' does and cheers me to see our girl 'Burly Chassis' doing her thing in true grand Bassey style. So much nicer to contemplate that she was probably 60 or so when she did this. And, at the time, we stood back in admiration and said, "You still got it there girl. Lookit you! You keep doing that glamorous, glitzy, thing!" She last performed live - as far as I know - in 2022. Which is incredible. Wales has it's share of cultural heroes and national treasures, but to be treasured for your _voice_ in Wales is a higher accolade than most! Wish the woman everything she wishes for herself 😘

"History Repeating," the 1997 song sung by Shirley Bassey, is indeed a captivating jazz track that showcases her powerful and unmistakable voice. The song was written by Alex Gifford of the Propellerheads and blends modern big beat electronic music with classic jazz elements, giving it a timeless feel. Bassey's vocals bring an undeniable sophistication to the track, lending her rich, expressive voice to lyrics that suggest the cyclical nature of history-fitting for the way styles, trends, and even politics seem to repeat over time. The song became widely recognized after being featured in *Something About Mary*, adding to its appeal. As for Shirley Bassey, she absolutely had an extraordinary career that spanned decades. Bassey, a Welsh singer with a career beginning in the 1950s, is perhaps best known for her powerful voice and her role as the iconic voice behind several James Bond theme songs, including "Goldfinger" (1964), "Diamonds Are Forever" (1971), and "Moonraker" (1979). These Bond songs alone cemented her legacy in popular culture, but her influence extends far beyond that. Bassey's unique voice, known for its wide range and dramatic power, has allowed her to cross over into different genres, from jazz to pop, to the big orchestral numbers she is so famous for. Her style-elegant, commanding, and full of personality-has made her an enduring figure in music for decades. Over the years, she’s released numerous albums, performed countless live shows, and garnered international acclaim. Bassey was also known for her glamorous stage presence and her ability to emotionally connect with her audience, which helped her maintain her appeal across generations. By the time "History Repeating" came out, she was already a living legend, and this collaboration with Propellerheads introduced her to a new audience in the '90s, proving once again her ability to stay relevant across different eras of music. Even in her later years, Bassey continued performing and recording. She released an album, *I Owe It All To You*, in 2020 to mark her 70 years in show business, which was a testament to her enduring talent and career longevity. Shirley Bassey's career is a testament to her incredible talent and adaptability, making her one of the most beloved and enduring singers of the 20th century and beyond. "History Repeating" is just one more example of her ability to captivate and delight audiences with her extraordinary voice and charisma.

I loved this when it came out, still do, a classic amalgam of sounds BEAUTIFULLY arranged and produced and introducing Ms Bassey's voice to a fresh audience. In much the same way as Johnny Cash's rendition of Hurt married different genre's together, it has a totally timeless quality that stands up for itself every time it is heard. We benefit greatly from those composers, arrangers and producers who have a breadth of listening history and an appreciation of many different sounds for their own sake and their capacity to give them back to us in a new form. Great stuff!

Possibly my favorite one-hit-wonder and video. The detail of a 'Swinging Sixties' live TV transmission is faultless, the big band brass orchestration impeccable and the track cleverly melds a grand John Barry-era theme with a Nineties vibe. Plus a typical dash of British humor with the breakdancing crew and the presenter's slightly reverential tone. Shirley Bassey shows how if you take care of a strong voice, when you get older it develops a timbre that cannot be replicated by teens and twenties. The richness matures, like a vintage Rolls-Royce. Few singers of any age could challenge and overcome so heavy a tune. She beats it into the ground. Her variations around it- the momentary pauses and resumptions- add to the sense of pushing forward. Like the best swing-era numbers, the drive is relentless. And as a bonus, the lyrics are among the wisest written since Bill Haley and Elvis came to the fore and pop became all about pandering to teenage illusions. Well done, Propellerheads.

Brilliant, Sparkling, absolute sveldt! If you are awed, rightly so; From the very first crack in the endless span of dark billions of years ago the Universe has been weaving space and time together just so moments such as this could occur. On a side note, I had an Aunt Lucille who looked and sounded just like Shirley Bassey. Growing up in the 70s I was both terrified and completely in awe of Aunt Lucille. She made me rake the shag carpets if I walked on them, other than than she was fabulous!

Tragic we only had one album from these guys.. so many uses of so many snippets all over TV.. and this is high art.
@YouHaventSeenMeRight5 жыл бұрын
Technically we had 1.5 albums from these guys, maybe 1.8 if I include both of the E.P's (Extended Play E.P. and Dive E.P), but I get your meaning. They quit the business way to soon.

This is for people who love music & appreciate surreal understatement. A true masterpiece which shits all over the broadly forgetful nonessential spew that attempts to pass itself off as entertainment now... Yes I'm lampooning myself but it's such a great little timeless package 👍

I was a fan of these guys many many years ago. You're a bit late to the party love - hence the lack of support for your silly ALL CAPS request.
