I forgot to mention in the video, take the key out of ignition and make sure your cigarette lighter or auxiliary port is live all the time, or this won't work. Oil Filter Friday, Watch a New automotive oil filter inspection video every Friday on this channel.

Drove a 1991 Escort and the cigarette lighter was switched to the ignition. Plugged a voltmeter in it and it came on while the engine was running. Saved my butt one day when a wire burned in two and stopped charging.

@@vegajf51 If you dont have a cig. lighter than that one would be a good choice, just hook up your 9-volt battery to the holder first then plug it in, you wouldn't want to accidentally hit neg. to pos. and vise versa.
@samkitty589411 ай бұрын
Well, the only way for the cigarette port to be active is with ignition key in aux position. And disconnecting the battery with ignition key in is never a good idea. Plugging this 9v device into a dead cigarette lighter port did nothing. I think you faked the ending. Codes were lost and you manually reset the radio codes before showing us the end.

@@samkitty5894 What??? I did no such thing. My cigarette lighter port is live with the key off.

Great idea! I tie in another battery after a car alarm lock up that cost me plenty!

Used a very similar one on my car. As the cigarette lighter did not work with key turned to OFF I set the key to ACC and the memory saver worked perfectly. I'd read a few tips on KZbin about that. And instead of using a glove I put the positive lead into a plastic bag!

My Energizer battery lasted 13 years on my vintage Porsche but I can no longer find it at any store. My VW's Bosch battery is 10 years old. When cars are not driven for weeks I use a battery maintainer and top fluids. San Diego California average temp 75.
@WhipCityWrencher4 жыл бұрын
Wow, you got your money's worth out of them batteries. An average temp of 75° probably helps them last longer too. Also the maintainer helps, for the past 3 yrs. or so I was putting a 4 amp charger on mine once a month (for 2hrs.).Thanks for watching. Take Care.😊

I had a energizer battery that lasted for 7 years and I thought that was along time. You guys are ahead by years.

That's a cool tool. I disconnected my battery and put it in neutral to replace my transmission and I heard some wierd noises that I could only hear from under the van. I thought it was a squirrel or something. It was my relay clicking on and off under the driver seat because I had a small solar panel connected directly to the battery cables that was powering it. This reminded me of that

Many vehicles with 12-volt DC ports are non-powered. I need the ignition key for the ACC position. There is now an OBD II plug directly into the OBD II port.

I was asking about the 9 volt battery. Wil last a couple of days or a couple hours ???
@WhipCityWrencher Жыл бұрын
LOL 😊 I don't know I guess it would last at least a couple of hours, probably more. It didn't take me that long to change the car battery.
@badrubakari1418 Жыл бұрын
It all depends on how much current the ECU uses when the car is not running. You can work it out line this... Assume a 9v battery has 500mAh (or 4.5Wh) of energy. And assuming the onboard ECU draws about 1W this will be good for about 4.5hrs. A solution to your problem is to just connect another spare 12V battery and that could last you for years.
@bobsoft Жыл бұрын
Not very long. As soon as you open the door and the interior lights come on that 9 volt battery will die. Its better to use an OBD cable that has a fuse and a diode to isolate the backup battery and then use a 12 volt car or motorcycle battery with some amperage.

I have had good luck with walmart batteries.
@SuperFredAZ6 ай бұрын
You should never put a 9 V battery across a 12 V battery unless the device has a blocking diode. the 9 V battery could overheat and possibly explode. Cigarette lighter may or may not be permanently wired to the car battery.

Maybe so, I don't know, it worked fine for me.That's what this computer memory saver is meant for. I put a "use at your own risk" text first 10 sec. of the video. Thanks👍

@WhipCityWrencher Жыл бұрын
Hi Dan, I still have the one I used in this video, and the one I replaced in this video was about 9 years old, so I think these are pretty good batteries. There are only a handful of battery manufacturers, and they go under different names, I think the Walmart batteries are made by Johnson www.johnsonbatteryco.com/

Do you know can you refill this battery? it seems the design has changed and they remove the access cap on the top.........
@WhipCityWrencher2 жыл бұрын
I never tried it but you probably could if you pried up on the top, I'm not sure though. There's really no need to refill them . The one I changed was 9 years old, I doubt you could get any more life out of it. Thanks for asking👍

@moby1388 Жыл бұрын
I don't like the idea having 12volts across a 9volt battery. You could fit a diode to block that, it will then only allow the 9volts to flow all the way through.
@bobsoft Жыл бұрын
Yeah its not a very good setup. An OBD cable with fuse and diode on the positive line and a 12 volt battery is much better.
