I fly fished for years on a 9ft 8wt rod that I spent like 20 bucks on and caught boat loads of fish. Thought I was in heaven when I could afford 70 bucks for a Cortland set up. My point is fish with what you can afford. The fish sure as heck don't know the difference. WIth practice you can become just as good a fisherman with the cheaper rods as you can with a top end rod.

Lol I used to think fishing was about skill then I saw a video of a guy catching fish using a chunk of wood and hooks. Fish go for movement you can catch a fish on anything, yes worms are probably still the best bait but ya.

@@sammccord197 yeah because that was a bass. Fly fishing is different. Some trout are very picky of what they eat and some trout are just plain dumb.

That $1,300 set up isn’t what hooks you up. I see a lot of old guys with crappy set ups emptying out the creek. We all can’t afford an Orvis split bamboo (I do have one that my Dad left me.). I actually prefer a fast action graphite. If it meets that criteria and is 7’-8’, that’s all I care.

Every single 'can you catch a fish on a cheapo combo' video I've ever seen comes to the same conclusion ... yes, you certainly can. The nicer rods are a nice luxury, but by no means a necessity. If a $40 combo is your budget, get it and fish on! The most important part of fishing will still be there for you.

I caught a lot of fish on a Walmart Daiwa rig. It was not a terrible rod, but I used it one summer at my Dad’s because I forgot my Fenwick. I wound up quite fond of it because I caught a lot of fish on it. It is the fisherman, not the rod. You can buy a rod at a yard sale or a flea market and kill it.

I have several top end fly rods for everything from Steelhead to trout. However, my "go to" rod for river fishing is an 9 ft vintage fiberglass rod I picked up in Value Village for $5 . Replaced the eyelets as they were scored from long use. I don't want to risk my Sage when climbing river banks or having to go through the bush. Old and new Fiberglass require a slower cast but aremuch tougher and with a Single hand Skagit rig 70 feet cast are easy. Lessons and practice are a far better investment than the cost high precision rods.

Great challenge!!! They moved our daily limit down to 5 fish so we had a challenge where we caught 1 fish per lake,,, race to get a limit.

When I lived in the Midwest I noticed barely any fly fishing gear, however out here in the Southwest Walmart’s have fly gear. Fly fishing seems to be more popular out here in the mountain west

Only Walmarts in wealthy areas have fly gear. A Walmart in northern Virginia by Dc is probably going to have some, same goes for other very expensive wealthy places like Bozeman or by NYC.

We thinks it’s best to get one… whatever you can afford will probably work. If you can afford it we have some recommendations of the best starter kits but it’s better to get something and get started. Fly fishing doesn’t have to be expensive.

@@woddles2551 yes… some Wal-marts… Or probably most sporting goods stores. After you get your combo and you get in to it for sure support a local fly shop or fishing store if you have one in your town. Often times a fly shop will be almost the same price as a Walmart but you will learn a lot more about fishing and fly shops help support conservation for fisheries in your area.

When you purchase a fly rod kit you don't get the best line. You need to upgrade to a better line that will last longer.
