ACU can be dyed green and or brown, it is a fantastic night vision camo as it actually disrupts the visual lines w some IR, in the winter time/ fall at night/low light it can be a good transitional camo. More importantly you can grab an unlimited amount of ACU/ABU gear for dumb cheap.

I understand that certain laundry soaps contain "brighteners" which severly degrade the IR effectiveness of the clothing. Is there any affect on that when it comes to dying the fabric?

For those who don't know, boiling the acorns produces a brown water, which is a process called "Leaching," and it helps remove the bitterness from acorns making them much more edible. Takes multiple boils, but in a shtf scenario, you can eat them in hard form, or flour form.
@boonedockery7220
@boonedockery7220 2 жыл бұрын
Justin, I have done this many times in the past and the bread made with processed acorns is absolutely delicious! It is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL that the leaching process is repeated until there is NO visible oil on the surface of the still water of the leaching bath. For those that don't know, consuming unprocessed acorns can kill you in a survival situation! The tannins in the acorn will cause the stomach to contract and stay contracted. It will pelletize anything in the stomach preventing any digestion from continuing. You would basically wind up starving to death or succumbing to severe dehydration. Modern Medical facilities may be able to reverse the effects, but if you are in the wilderness.... you'll dye a slow painful death.

ABSOLUTELY! When I was was reenacting, I walnut dyed much of my clothing and kit. I participated in woods tacticals from South Georgia to Southern Maine, East Coast to the Mississippi and it was always an effective color year round. The ACU/UCP just provides a subtle pattern to the natural hue obtained through this process.

So, not 100% if it's true or not, but I remember hearing from several people that UCP is actually MEANT to be dyed by washing it in local mud of your operational environment prior to going on patrol. I wanna say it was in an official publication, but the source eludes me. If you see guys deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan for months, you'll notice their dirtied, almost dyed UCP uniforms actually worked pretty damn well. I had a similar personal experience when wearing them in the Georgia mud at Fort Benning, and it worked pretty damn well. Thanks for showing yet another great way to dye UCP. Having this in winter time, and the Apple Green Rit dye for summer would make for a fantastic uniform standard for any prepper or airsofter or some such.

Browns and tans work year round. Green works great 1-3 seasons. Field Drab with some mud splatters, some charcoal and grease stains, and a handful of scattered grass stains would be the worlds best camo. You can't change mind on that. When things get spicy camouflage Appalachistan Cartharttflage will become a legend for generations to come.

A squirrel looks very out of place in a primarily green environment, rabbits stand out on green grass, which is where they sit and eat. Bears are recognisable at a distance because they're a fairly uniform colour with a distinctive silhouette. A deer stand out in a lot of areas too. Colour is only part of their solutions. UCP is a mixture of tans, greys and greens, and works quite well in certain environments or at certain distances. A lot of camo that looks effective close up, becomes a human shaped, dark 'blob' further away, whereas predominately lighter colours may not look good close up, but work better at a distance.

I remember when I was a kid I visited Mount Rushmore and my dad got an Artful picture of some soldiers standing in a granite viewing area with the Monuments in the background. It's funny, Polished Granite is the only thing that ACU Blends in with. Even then, only a specific type of granite. Another thing I remember is being told that it's "actually the best camouflage" and that it "tricks the eye and blends in with everything" I like most people think that it looks like crap. However the Walnut ACU looks cool, well done, I'm impressed.

As a side note, for you guys needing to camo your stands or blinds, I found that flat, milk chocolate colored latex paint (exterior) blends with everything in the woods. I used it on my tripods, my climbing and strap on stands and my ladder stand! Even knowing where they are you have a hard time seeing them until you're close to them. They don't need anything else, but if you want to break up the outline a little more, a sparing application of flat black in small amounts helps. But, do it with an almost dry brush so you don't get any hard edges. Hope this helps and good luck.

Did the same thing with walnut hulls and a set of the original 5 color desert camo from the late 70's, about 20 years ago. That made a nice set of hunting camo's. One thing I've noticed is that if you do your dye in a iron pot you'll get darker brown than if you use an aluminum pot. The aluminum seemed to make the cloth turn light brown or a dirty grey.

You can dye polymer mags, pistol frames, ru k sack clips, etc by using synthetic rit dye and hot water, just before boiling, dunked for about 7 minutes. It's easy to fo from lighter to dark, but not so much from dark to light. I tried it and it works fantastic.

Again, Justin, Thank you for adding to the knowledge collection in these comments! I have dyed PVC projects with RIT Dye, I actually add a little of the PVC surface prep solvent to the dye and it allows the dye to set much deeper than with plain dye alone. I will definitely try the vinegar dip on my future dye projects on the stubborn bits! Might take a little bit of time on items with a lot of buckles but it will be well worth it! The ACU has been issued in UCP, Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Patter/Multicam (OEFCP) and Operational Camouflage Patter/Scorpion W2 (OCP) The Yellow and Pink tints are the Fire resistant treatments applied to FRACUs. I followed the Testing and Evaluation program while it was happening. By that point I was aware of Crye Precision, Multicam and their submission into the program. When I read the program was stopped 3/4 of the way through and UCP was the accepted pattern, I was flabbergasted! Of the competing patterns that were made public, every one that I saw were superior patterns. Now that I know walnut dyeing can salvage these inexpensive surplus items, I "appreciate" their availability and bargain basement pricing. I have discovered there are a lot of top quality gear designs out there manufactured by high end companies made in UCP. The same equipment in other patterns are 2 to 3 times the cost even in used condition. I have found a lot of this UCP gear in new, unissued condition at half the price of the same item used, in different patterns. I'm sorry for the long reply, I'm certain it was over kill. Even my buddies and brother who were in the service during its tenure said ACU in reference to the pattern even if they’re aware of the difference. I didn’t realize it was produced in a government lab which is why they went with it. Glad they finally switched to multi cam.

Hi John, The result of the colored field uniform is significantly better than the original. It is remarkable that a natural product like walnut shells is able to dye synthetic fabrics. That's really impressive. The only thing that is not so good in my opinion are the Velcro surfaces. Especially at the front of the chest, the three Velcro areas look like a smiley face😑😑😑😑. And this well-known impression draws the eye and reveals the camouflage effect. But that's just a small note. Thanks for showing and explaining! Greetings Torsten

Thank You Torsten! I agree with you completely! I will attempt to remove all the Velcro from the next set I dye. I took a much closer look at the design of the shirt and pants and I was left scratching my head with confusion. Not only was the camouflage pattern horribly ineffective but the basic design of the uniform is very poor. I will be replacing all the Velcro closures with buttons as I will add button closures to the blouse just in case the zipper fails. Now, I just have to find a place that I could purchase spare time from... TOO MANY PROJECTS AND TOO LITTLE TIME!!!

The trousers I dyed with only hot water and a single bag of dried hulls did a great job of changing the pattern just enough to be effective. ACU’s were made in M81 & OCP/Multicam/Scorpion. 2: UCP was created by the Army/DOD, using the same pattern as Marpat, AOR 1/2 & Cadpat. It’s still the best performing pattern in NATO’s inventory- under nir. 3: Multicam has pink in it & the British used pink in North Africa, in WW2.

That looks a lot like the UCP-D pattern that was trialed in Afghanistan. Also, ACU is the uniform, UCP is the pattern. 'Army Combat Uniform', 'Universal Camo Pattern'. As for 'universal', it's not. And it's really sad how much money the Army spent on it. They could have kept the existing M81 woodland and the 3 color desert patterns, and used those patterns with the new ACU, instead of going with a crap pattern that 'might have been effective against a peer/near-peer opponent', but Iraq and AFG were not peer opponents, they were literal insurgencies. Multicam would have been an excellent all around choice, especially now that there are climate/region specific MC patterns such as Arid, Tropic, and Black. Anyway, that's a great job on making those actually 'camo'. Hats off to you on the great job and tutorials

Really good reuse of the ACUs. I wore this pattern from 2007 through 2014, and was issued Multicam when deployed, so the Army didn’t think think it was very useful. The ACU uniform was comfortable. With silk weight underwear and waffle fleece, it could be worn in the field without a jacket until it got below freezing. Dying this uniform from surplus is likely cheaper than buying a new set of the latest pattern, and it will hold up well enough for most backwoods activity. I used surplus uniforms before I was in service, and they definitely were cheaper than fancy, name brand gear, and never had an issue with function or wear.

Don't forget to check E-bay also. Adding vinegar to dyes also helps it set. What about tie dyeing ? Got lots of walnut trees on my property defiantly will be trying some experiments. Noticed the not as dark did seem to have a little better camo pattern on the floor of the forest.

I have used Vinegar with Rit Dye on items in the past and it really help set the pigment in the fabric. So far all of the items I dyed with the walnut hulls has set very well. The key is to have a lot of hulls in your dye bath. I was very happy to have had the opportunity to try a few experiments at The Central Ohio Bushcraft Gathering! The trousers I dyed with only hot water and a single bag of dried hulls did a great job of changing the pattern just enough to be effective. Ideally, I would like the dye to be half way between the color of the blouse and the trousers. I am not going to re-dye the trousers so I can test the pattern/color effectiveness from now through Spring. I have found some great deals on eBay, however, I have learned that when I add links to those items they sell out quickly and are no longer available from the linked sellers when viewers look for them. I found another great vendor that have amazing deals on new never issued items in ACU. I plan on placing an order from them this afternoon. store.glennsarmysurplus.com/acu-digital-c410.aspx There are 3 pages of ACU items. Check them out and compare them with the eBay items and prices. Currently, it has become very important to get the most/ best for our money. Have a great day!

The top is too dark, it 'blobs out' once you're a few yards away. But the trousers are pretty good. Up close, the normal UCP looks terrible in the woods, however, try the original, undyed garments at a longer distance... you might be surprised at how effective it can be. The pink hues you mentioned won't stand out beyond arms length. Besides, a beach or desert can look pink at times, as can many environments at sunrise or sunset.

Seen a few other channels do this and it's making me wanna get my hands on a couple pairs of blouses and trousers. Looks like the walnut is perfect for the dead leaves meanwhile you kinda stick out up top, no matter. There's a fella that used an apple green dye here on YT, you probably seen him, blends perfectly with summer foliage. I would be very impressed if you did a green dye using natural ingredients like you did the walnut, however that seems like a difficult process being that the green from any plant is gonna turn brown... Dunno, but I think if you did you'd have perfect summer and winter uniforms. Hell I think a green blouse for foliage and walnut pants for the forest floor might look strange but could be very effective at a moderate distance.

The UCP Camouflage pattern served us well when attached with 10th Mountain in and out of COP’s in the two combat deployments I had in the Mountains of Afghanistan. UCP also works surprisingly well in deciduous woodlands during winter. ‘The Grey’ tone in it helps it absorb whatever color it’s surrounded by. Even in this video you can see this effect with the tree trunks (Not the leaves). It starts to become really hard to spot at a distance starting at 100 Meters and out. Much the same way A-TACS AU (The Brown/Tan Variant often looks like the FG when used in Green/Woodlands. Light Refraction, absorbtion, and reflection can play some interesting tricks to the human eye. (Cameras make UCP look a lot worse than it is). And no camo works well when moving.

The reason that Uniform sucked wasn't the design or the colors, but that the Brass in the Army kept demanding their troops keep them from getting stained or dirty. Which meant that the uniform couldn't stain and take on the color of the areas they were deployed to.

Regular RIT dye does set better when you use vinegar with synthetic fabrics or synthetic blends. Apple cider vinegar is more acidic than white vinegar, so the color set would work better with synthetics and synthetic blends. The "Pink" comment was primarily for comedic affect. As you can see my "sense of humor" ain't everyone's cup of tea. I am a big history buff and am very well aware of the British Desert Pink paint they used in North Africa during World War II to great effect. So, there's that... Brother I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! Especially your surplus videos. Given your dense vegetation the mix-and-match way you combine Coyote, OD, Foliage, and Ranger Green work fantastically! Where I live in Ohio, most of our forests have a very high canopy and are fairly open. Therefore camouflage patterns work best. I am very pleased that "A" pattern is visible through the dying process. I was active in historical reenacting for about 20 years and I walnut dyed many items of clothing and kit, including a red and white checked shirt. It all dyed slightly differently but it all blended well in the woods year round. I just checked out i-dye. The green looks great! I see a lot of folks dye ACU with RIT Apple Green and it is WAY TO BRIGHT! I have been researching Dye Color Mixing to create specific colors. Of course since I have many ideas and practically no time, it will probably be a while before I can experiment with the dye color pallets! Have a great and blessed day Brother!

Excellent, looks great. I really like my ABU Airmans Battle Shirt since the pockets are handy for placing tools and my notepad w/pen if I need to make notes. I suppose now that I've broke down an invested in a smartphone... I might keep in a pocket this season when I get to use. The Army version is OK, though I don't really like the pocket design. I haven't thought about actually requiring for camo... though I like this color change since get's to a different look. I don't have sweat glands, at least enough that are useful, and have thought over the years even if turns grease monkey stained... a white version would be great since when there is a breeze the material does feel cooler especially when wet.

I've not tried dyeing a combat shirt yet, but I feel confident this method would work well.

i live in the south of Spain and we have the european walnut (Juglans regia) but fortunately there are a lot of black walnuts (Juglans nigra) in lot of city parks and gardens, so i can still get those hulls in autumn too

Looks fantastic, looks like im picking up some ACU stuff. My uncle has a couple walnut trees that i could harvest from. I liked the lighter and more disruptive shade on the trousers. I live in SE Ohio and with leaves on the ground it looks like a good match

I'm sure you've all heard this a million and one times but be very wary of what you wash your cammies with if you want them to stay proper cammies. Any optical brighteners etc and you'll glow like a Christmas tree when terminator comes looking for you under night vision

I dyed some of my old cotton t-shirts (that weren't quite so white anymore) with coffee, but unfortunately they only turned light beige. Now I will try again with walnuts, thanks for your inspiration. 🇺🇸Greetings from the hart of Europe - Germany🇩🇪🇪🇺

I have used coffee and tea to dye fabric. The tea actually made a darker brown than the coffee.

@@bobbyg9587 Thanks for the tip, I might try that too. What tea did you use for this?
@bobbyg9587
@bobbyg9587 2 жыл бұрын
@Richard G. It was ordinary Lipton tea in bags. I don't know if you can get it in Germany, but I think any cheap black tea will do. I made the tea very strong (many bags) and soaked the garment overnight. It made a medium brown that matches the color of the dirt where I live (semi arid, almost desert).
