Ok, so I learned something extremely valuable to me here. . I've seen this trick of jointing a wide board and making that step. However, every time i've seen it they have built a sled that had to be run through the planer with the board. Usually when i'm doing this I am dealing with really long boards and I have no board long enough to act as the reference surface. This is the first time I've seen someone have the reference surface fixed. Thank you for showing this!

Talent first, skill second, dream shop third. There were a couple of tools in this video I've never seen before. But I believe Guy could turn out a good product with a cheap toolbox saw and a pack of sandpaper. And what I've learned about myself is that I like making jigs and designing and building my own machine tools more than I like the actual woodworking. There's a place for everyone under the sun.

Did i see it correct? Did you use the router table for the 45% angles on the corners? I have need for very accurate mitres on 12 mm thick walnut stock, i guess this relies on your router being accurately at 90 degrees to the table surface.
@GuysShop8 жыл бұрын
Yes, I used a 45 degree miter bit. It only will work on stock that is 7/16" thick however. I think they make some that have a larger cutting surface though.

No talking maybe good for some, but what is the point of listening to a bunch of machine noise with no explanation of why and what you are doing. Sure we see the operations and understand what they are. You might as well sleep up the video 25 times realtime. The video would impart the same value. Guy you have made some very good instructional videos, demonstrating techniques and how to use various tools. In my opinion this is not the path to go down, share your talents, but this style of videos does not do that.

How thick is the top? A 3/4 in thick frame and panel seems like it would look way too thick but working with 1/2 in material would only leave 1/8 in of material for the mortise walls (using 1/4 in tenons). Really enjoyed the video.

Beautiful. Krenov is an excellent role model. I'm wondering about the mitred corners of the box though. They don't seem to have been splined. I know a box this size can hold out without splining mitred corners but it is a good structural detail. Krenov himself would almost certainly have used secret mitred dovetails. But nevertheless, It's a beautifully crafted box.
@GuysShop8 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much Ron! You're the first person to point that out. Yeah, a box this size is plenty strong enough to hold together without any reinforcement, and have done this many times in the past without issue. Krenov's original box had dovetails holding it together. I guess I just got lazy :) Thanks for watching!
@rontocknell35928 жыл бұрын
I have to admit I've also done glued mitred corners on boxes without issue. Yes Krenov would use through dovetails... even his drawer fronts show the dovetails rather than hiding them. I've been meaning to try making secret mitred dovetails because I love the idea of them. But, if I'm going to go to the trouble of making dovetails, I don't want to hide 'em.

The recipient is going to be proud to have such a nice piece! Quick little build for you. Was it much easier to record and edit without the voice? I enjoy working with walnut but always find it difficult deciding whether to put a low satin or gloss finish on such a beautiful wood! Both bring out different characteristics of the wood. Your use of dark wax on an already dark wood was interesting though.
@GuysShop8 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mac! And yes, it was much easier to record and edit. I should say much faster anyhow. The dark wax is what I always use on walnut. I think it looks better when filling in the grain.
