Beautiful stuff, Paul. Love the splendid crotch figure on that first one. You still coming up to the Conn area to get our walnut log? 🙂 There's a brand new foundation where that tree stood several weeks ago! Excited, it's to be our home later this year. 🙂

Such beautiful slabs! Shame about the metal in that last log. Hopefully the grain will get you a higher price to offset the cost of the blade. I always wondered how a sawyer handled embedded metal in logs. Now I know,,,,hope and prayers!! Thanks for posting this. Good to see ya still at it. :)

Unfortunately, the "grain" does not move price. With Walnut slabs it's all about thickness and width. We will still get the same $$$ as a slab with out metal, just ore work and more costs involved because of the Metal. The way to fully loose is to not cut the log or not be able to make some of the log into slabs, then we are throwing the money away we spent on the log.

Great video, Paul. Never fails that you'll hit metal after changing the blade! We always find the slabs with blue stain from metal sticking around longer and hardly selling, for obvious reasons. Do you find certain customers like that sort of thing because it adds "character"? How do you go about selling these slabs that have metal throughout?

It's hit and miss (-: But yes the stain is not usually desirable. We are usually surfacing the lumber for our customers, so usually we remove the metal before cnc / planer

Ask Matt corona about carbide blade said he used one for 2 years
@CanadianWoodworks

I've gone the carbide route, but have not had great success yes I get through a few metal cuts but they still get destroyed pretty quick. I hit somethings that not only melted the carbide away but even the steel shaped teeth! For the cost of the blade it does not make sense for me. $450 dollar blade, get a couple extra logs if hitting metal, or use $85 dollar blades I can sharpen 3-4 times. Cheaper blade that I can sharpen is the way to go for us. I'll drink a Matt Corona to that.

We hit more metal in Walnut than any other species. And people want us to pay 1,000$ for their yard tree. 🤣
