To all the keyboard plow operators in the comment section let me explain, the V plow not only breaks into hard snow banks but it also piles the snow higher then a standard sweep , any that falls off the other side is cleaned up by another plow...I have been plowing snow for NBDOT here in Canada for 20 years and we do the same thing in problem areas where we get a lot of drifting. Anyway very cool to see the old Walters in action!

Exactly. I explained about "stepping the banks", further up the thread. People have no clue, that V plows are an absolute necessity, where the snow falls in feet. Anyway, all the best. Be safe.

QDUS... So, it always had the Allison Transmission-- I read in a book that is was an A model originally. I guess that was wrong or a typo. So, when you rebuilt it-- did you keep the Detroit Diesel in it or go to a Cummins? It really is a nice truck. I have a FEKS that I'm rebuilding with a DT466 210hp or perhaps a CAT 3116 engine to stay within the safety limits of the 6spd gearbox. Also the engine will maintain the trucks' top speed of 45mph since they both operate at 2600rpm redline. Personally, I am looking for a nice new N-Series Cab that I can put a Detroit Diesel 8V92T or 12V71TT in it. What wouldn't be better than a Snow Fighter with a 8LL gearbox and 525Hp engine with 1450ft-lbs or 1500 ft-lbs of torque.... That's just me.

What's up with that rear axle? Does it NOT have a differential? Because all I see is an axle housing and no "pumpkin". VERY cool old truck, by the way. Okay, I found the answer myself, and for anyone else who's interested in this stuff, the front and rear differentials are mounted up high within the frame, with the wheels mounted to a basic non-driving beam suspension. Stub axle shafts go from the overhead diffs to the wheels, and at the junction to the wheel there is tremendous additional gear reduction. This means the differentials can have a lot of reserve "over-design" without being extremely large. All in all, it's a very clever and unusual design, but a design I once saw on a very old, pioneering brand of 4x4 truck of much smaller size.
@robertmintz63

Eric of 1yr ago . Have you looked at any of the pacific lodging truck vids or the building of the Allcan highway to Alaska ? Or the building of the roads the the mine in the extreme north Canada , those were monsters ! truck width 10 ft The drive power is accomplished through a gear reduction (planetary) in each hub , & as you said , this allows for smaller drive shaft /diff etc

Eric, , What vid was this of pioneer 4x4
@ericl2969
@ericl2969 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertmintz63 Just to nitpick on the terminology so no one with an interest becomes confused, there are no planetary hubs on Walter trucks. There's just a spur gear on the outboard end of the drive axle inside of a very large ring gear. The ring gear has teeth on the inside like the ring gear of a planetary hub, but there are no planet gears and no planetary action.

Eric L . Thank you so very much ! 👍 I had not seen the truck you were talking about , & from the snow plow vid I could not determine what it had , I was going on speculation supposing it might be a planetary set up like my tractor , but it also has a differential, & I think the vid on the All-Can highway , or was it the 10’ wide Mack trucks built specially for going to the north , don’t remember exactly, to long ago I saw it .

@@matthewfox3760 How deep do you plant snow? Farmers are using the time now to prep for the planting season as getting a good start can be a few hours difference from a disaster so those that have a number of fields to plant will shift everything to a starting point even when snow is still on the ground as a method to save a few hours of movement they could be planting.

It appears you need a different plow on the front. You are dragging all the snow out onto the road. Our bank wingers don't do that. A normal front plow is needed.
@farmcentralohio

he's using what he's got, and doing pretty good with it. where do you see "all the snow" going to the middle as you say? looks to me like at least 90% of what he's plowing is going off the road and what little is left on the road can easily be moved or left to melt. title says pushing the banks back, not plowing the road. please pay attention to the video or have a clue about what your saying before commenting.
@1DirtyMutt
@1DirtyMutt 5 жыл бұрын
farm.central. ohio Easily moved or Melted? If he used the correct front plow there’d be nothing to be “easily removed” and I highly doubt that’s the ONLY style plow DOT has in their inventory. And at 9:00 you see they actually have the correct tool for the job, one pass without the need for an additional driver, equipment cost etc. As for melting, it looks like the whole “melting” is a complete failure based on what most of the plowed road surface looks like especially in the later portion of the video. Common Sense can’t be taught you either have it or you don’t...

@@1DirtyMutt Nothing in this clip is about "using the correct plow." In fact, the title actually says what it's about, in case you opted to read it. This truck is indeed a survivor and it's been nicely restored, and here we see it being taken out, perhaps for a demo of the old beast, or perhaps because cutting that high step is not something all plow trucks can do. And because the poster recognizes the significance of this old beast, he made a video for other gearheads to enjoy. I for one thought it was pretty cool.

Using the right tool for the job saves a lot of time and money. A V plow wasn’t the right tool for the job... What Supervisor would authorize this?
@superdog1964
@superdog1964 5 жыл бұрын
@dirtmutt- Yes, this is the right tool for the job. None of the regular plows they have can push back the TOP of the bank(s) and clear the space on the berm at the same time. This is the smartest thing they can do. Conventional plows need somewhere to go with the snow if or when the next storm hits. These plows are short and narrow at the double yellow center line of the road and tall and wide on the white fog line or berm end with a very noticeable forward curve or radius along the entire length. This allows the snow to roll or fall forward and to the right of the driver off of the roadway. This action makes it very easy for the trucks to move fairly large amounts of snow with minimum effort, maximum fuel economy and higher speeds taking the shortest amount of time to clear the road. These plows are designed for "average" seasonal snowfalls, not the 1 in 100 blizzard event. We all know what happens when Mrs. Smith is late or misses her weekly hairdresser appointment and/or her dog FiFi cant get to the groomers because of snowy roads? Just ask the Mayor or Council person at the next monthly meeting (If they can hear you? Their ears are probably bleeding profusely from the tongue lashing they just received about her horrible hair day!). In Winter seasons like this one, the time to act is NOW, not at 2AM with snow falling and the wind howling. Had this kind of proactive action not been taken, you could run into Mrs Smith and FiFi trying to go up the same road your going down? Since it is only single lane with no way to pass each other, YOU can argue about whats more important? Her new perm or the ambulance your riding in (along with the stroke you just had) and who is going to back up. If you have never run a plow, worked in emergency service or served as a public official it is probably a good idea to get more information BEFORE making a judgement call about the operations and management of your township, city or borough. You should thank the Supervisor that made this call because they may have saved your life?

Obviously, you know NOTHING about the plowing going on here. He's stepping the banks. When you are in an area, where snow is measured in FEET, the banks have to be stepped, and pushed back, using a wing plow. This way, when it snows again, the plows can push the snow, up, and over the step they created. Otherwise, when the snow gets above a certain height, there is no place to put it. Not every town has large truck, or tractor mounted snow throwers. You don't do this, and it narrows the road, and it's ability to handle more than one lane.
@djwalt8
@djwalt8 4 жыл бұрын
What the operator is doing is called Shelfing. It gives the plow a place to push the snow when it starts getting deep again. This is one of the highest snow fall areas of the country. They need that V plow on that truck. Yes it creates a mess when it does this job, but you notice the cleanup truck behind? A tall v allows the snow to lift higher to roll over the huge berms on the sides of the roads. This is a much faster process than a loader or blower to remove the snow.
