The prince grinned and smirked because with the king's plan to sacrife his wife he could get rid of this woman, a woman he never wanted, as portraied in the marriage scene, where he could hardly kiss her.

A fact. When Iron Maiden made a song about the series "the prisoner" they wanted to use his voice in the intro. The manager of the band called him to take permission. He was so nervous talking to him. Patrick didn't ask any questions and just listened to the manager after that just said "DO IT" 😄

Edward the First is portrayed as completely evil in this film - he wasn't. He was a tough, brutal man living in tough, brutal times and acted in accordance with that. He cannot be judged by modern standards (which aren't much better than they were in the 14th century, incidentally).
