Recently I made a video where I saw a house that I thought was the worst ever, I lied...this is the worst.
I saw this house on the market with a guide price £10,000, and the pictures looked terrible. I decided to go check it out myself to see what was going on.
It was back in Middlesbrough, and I couldn't believe the state of it when I got there.
I have never seen a property for sale before in this state. The whole downstairs was flooded from a burst boiler. The entire roof was missing from fire damage. There was grow equipment so I assume it has been used from growing weed, which had caused the fire.
You really have to see it for yourself to believe it.
It also went to auction and I got to see how much it sold for...poor person who ever bought this.
I hope you enjoy,
WT

how much would it cost to put a new roof? i think thats the main problem with the house. once its done all you need to do is move all the trash away, fix the pipe and you got yourself a barn to live. sure, it would be a horrendous house to live in , but technically you could live in it.

Itmakes me angry and sad. You can see all the little touches which means someone loved that place once. Once upon a time somebody looked after it properly. Imagine all the memories that were made in those rooms - the marriages and births, the parties, the quiet winter afternoons. My grandparents lived in a terraced street in Liverpool. It's a cliche but it was a warm community. But the streets belonged to a factory, who pulled most of them down for a lorry park. Nan's half of the street somehow stayed there for decades afterwards. Even after everybody moved out and all the doors and windows were bricked up. Now all of it has gone - the whole area. It's Edge Lane Retail Park now. Even the name of Nan's street has gone. Makes me sad.

I think around 2005 they were given money to regenerate Liverpool but they spent a lot of money on demolishing terraced houses, which wasn't a very good idea because the streets that they marked for demolition which previously only had 2 or 3 boarded up houses then had lots and then funding ended in 2010 and the streets didn't get demolished and were left all abandoned... It was a real mess and honestly I think refurbishing houses is far better than destroying them!

Land values must be incredibly high in that part of Middlesborough because the actual building itself must surely have negative value - i.e. not repairable therefore incurring costs to demolish and clear before starting again with an entire new building. Or the buyer just took a blind punt.

Looking at your name, I'm presuming you're a British born male, you were obviously single at the time. If so, that means you are absolutely at the bottom of the pile, when it comes to housing, and other benefits. That's how valued we are in the UK today. We pay all of our taxes and get virtually no safety net. I lost my job during the Covid and all I was entitled to was £70 a week, after paying into the system for over 35 years. My housing costs alone (excluding bills) were £250 a week. Yet if I arrive on a boat tomorrow, I get everything paid for. Something's wrong.

you could get a lot more content out of these visits, the comment section is full of questions about how the neighbours must feel, and what the situation with the water is. If youre feeling brave you ahould knock on a few of the neighbours doors and ask if theyre willing to give their perspective and explain how its effecting other property in the area. You can then also take the feedback to the council and see what their sorry excuse is for leaving this place like it is with the water uncapped.

Such a shame. Would have made a lovely first house for someone. Big bay window, through lounge so it's nice and light, patio doors. Certainly beats my first flat, 1 bed, that I paid 9 times the guide price of this house for - and that was in 2001, same flat is likely worth £240,000 now. Pokey horrible place I was glad to be out of after 3 years. If that goes for £10k, it'd be well worth paying the 30-40k or so it'd cost to get it back into shape. £50k is still ruddy cheap for a house. Edit - just seen what it went for. I'd still say £37,000 isn't THAT much if a developer has bought it and can keep labour costs down - which I would imagine is what happens, nobody drops nearly 40 grand on something they haven't viewed. The house looks trashed, but it's amazing how quickly a good gang would turn that back into a nice house, I've seen much worse than that turned around and put back onto the market in less than a month. It's all superficial, the bricks and mortar is what truly matters and it all seemed in order. 1 day, 4 men and a few skips and that place would look hugely different. Once it's down to the shell and all the kelt is gone, you'd see the potential.

It’s utter robbery. You obviously don’t realise that Middlesbrough is one of the cheapest places in the U.K. to buy property and in that part of Middlesbrough properties the same size as that in perfect condition are selling for about 50k. I’m guessing you live somewhere in the south but everybody knows that housing is a complete rip off down there and that’s putting it mildly. Sometimes southerners have made the mistake of bidding on property in deprived ex mining villages in the north east that need a fair amount of work done, and paid far too much for the average price in that area, cos they don’t realise how drastically overpriced the south is

thats the worst thing about all these attached houses we have here. In most countries you could just bulldoze it in an afternoon then sell the land, but when its both ex-council and attached it becomes a real complication thats often not worth the effort because damaging the structural integrity of next door is a high possibility.

That’s not a house that’s a pile of rubble sitting on land. I just don’t understand why the council or water company hasn’t sent someone in to turn off the stopcock to shut off the water supply, unless the brass stopcock handle has broken off. Either way why leave it like that, it’s a health hazard. Maybe you turned on the stopcock to allow the water to spurt out everywhere to make the house look more shocking. 😂

Definitely not. I saw a video the other day that had Middlesbrough as the cheapest place in U.K. to buy property. That guy could probably have bought a property of the same size in that area in perfect condition for that same price. Middlesbrough is notorious for how deprived it is. This is the problem with these auctions. People get carried away and end up paying more than an house is worth considering what needs spending on it. It’s all psychological
@liberality
@liberality Жыл бұрын
I take your point that £36k is far too much to pay, which is probably due to naive online investors, but if I owned the property either side I might have to buy it and fix it up. Just because it represents a danger to my existing property and is certainly devaluing it. Also, when it comes to cash buyers, there are opportunities for laundering profits through building firms.

I presume the adjoining houses were rented out as owner occupiers would have been concerned enough about their own house to make a phone call to the council or fire brigade about getting the water turned off. The owner has probably had an insurance payout following the fire so he’s not going to be bothered with it now.

My theories. Once these houses were built around factories and let out to the workers. The factories closed and the properties sold. They are rented out by landlords who don't care and tenants who don't care. Eventually it will become a grow house like this one.
