Blackpool - a Finished Town or a New Beginning?

On this trip to Blackpool I wanted to check out some cheap houses for sale. I was really interested in finding some of the big old guest houses which have been selling for really cheap at auction. I managed to come across a whole array of this incredible buildings in many different states of life, so I was buzzing with this visit.
This actually proved to be a much more positive trip to the seaside town. It was a beautiful day, the beach looked amazing, the sky was blue, everyone was enjoying themselves.
I was also amazed by the sheer scale of buildings selling at a super low price point. I don't think there is anywhere else in the country you could buy a building of this size for so cheap, and what was amazing, is I got to see success stories of this.
It was also great to bump into and have chats with many locals or tourists visiting what is a beautiful seaside town, as long as the sun is out...

I bought an old hotel in Blackpool and turned it into a large family home. The kids have a play room as well as their own bedrooms that are big. An office for my husband as he works from home. A spare room for the family to visit I have an art room for painting a very large sitting room the best thing I did. I wouldn't be able to do this down in Folkestone out of my price range.

I'm planning on doing the same, but in Scarborough. (Blackpool is too flat for me!) Blended family, 6 kids, currently split across two properties in Leeds. No chance of affording anything big enough for all of us here (plus the crime / violence is starting to really scare me) but the east coast is a different matter altogether. I love old period houses and seaside towns are invariably full of them. And what kid doesn't want to grow up by the beach?😮

I live in Folkestone and the prices of the new apartments on the beach are crazy.The penthouse is £2.3 million and there seems to be plenty of takers for the places.The fishermans beach apartments in Hythe sold two years ago for £1.3 million there seems to be a lot of money coming in from London.

@@justmrpat even just a house you are looking at 300k min up here in Blackpool that would get you a huge place. For use as a family as my husband can do homework it made more financial sense to move to Blackpool and not have a huge mortgage.

Beware, those memories were great but its a shithole now. Went last year. More fortune teller tents than street bins, and the nicest place for a pint or food is a wetherspoons. Every 2nd shop sold sweets or rock. We drove to Whitby in the end.

People usually respond to being warm and friendly if you are warm and friendly to them. If they are not, it is obvious but usually they are. All you have to do is show and interest in someone and be genuine and they usually respond the same way. This fella shows this poetry in motion.

The digital nomad hotel is absolutely incredible! It's lovely to see he's kept the features from the 80s like the bannisters and panelling and still managed to make it look new and revitalised. I lived in Preesall, Over Wyre, for about half a decade and have a lot of fond memories of days out in Blackpool as a result. If they keep adding features like the comedy carpet and there are enough people willing to invest time, energy and love into the impressive old buildings, it could be a really lovely place again. I hope one day it manages to escape the seaside summer tourism trap it's fallen into and more job opportunities are generated for people there. Brand new to this channel and so excited to see what's to come. ✨

The guy with the 15 bed at the end is wild to me. As someone who obviously works online, the first thing I check at hotels is the internet speed. But I've never thought that people would be setting up a hotel SPECIFICALLY for it. It's crazy to think that it's bloomed to be such a wide ranging profession that entire hotels are setting up just to cater to it.

I'm not a builder. I was a trainee bricklayer and labourer, but i highly doubt the subsidence of that house could be fixed, especially as it is also attached to another home. I've seen houses pulled down to this very issue.

​@@johnniethepom7545Yup you are right. Mine was underpinned and I'm in the center of a row. We all got underpinned together. Only took a few days if that. Big machinery though but cost us each about 20k. Ours had to be future proofed from earthquakes and subsidence due to liquefacation. House no longer feels sea sick, completely solid feeling. Immediately remedies doors and windows but of course touchups are needed. We all had new underhouse insulation which was only about 2k each. Its worth it and should give the house a very long life. We all had new heatpumps installed also (government subsidized was 5k for 5.5kw including insulation.) Clearly that place would need plumbing and modern wiring. After that decorating.

I love Blackpool. When I moved from Melbourne, Australia to the UK 🇬🇧 in 2022 I spent the first 2 weeks in Blackpool. I loved this place. Such an awesome town of contrast , pleasure beach , dingy back lane ways, beautiful sunsets, boarded up houses, bright lights & late nights… great video mate, absolutely loving the content! I’m now living in Manchester and always drive up to Blackpool to spend a day.

Renovation is the most expensive kind of construction to perform. What is most cost efficient is to keep up on maintenance, so you don't have to rennovate. That said, concrete only has a lifespan of about 120 years at most, so at some point a cement foundation is going to give way and crumble.

As a tip if you take some vasaline and add a little essential oil like eucalyptus or lavender or similar, put a bit under the nose like vapour rub, it will help block the smell, morticians and undertakers use this trick sometimes.

Being Bulgarian, I intentionally watched this video and was very curious to learn more about it after recently hearing a brief interview with 2 Brit youngsters that visited Sunny Beach this year and referring it as "it's just like a warmer Blackpool". I think I understand what they meant because I never have imagined that Britain had its own proper cool Sunny Beach! 😁 I have only been to London twice and we hopped to Briton for 1 days in June and was freezing and know nothing about Blackpool!! The digital nomad place is amazing and wish the gentleman all the best with his business. Very cool, informative and enjoyable video and love the accent 😊

Hi Turnip.I have no doubt Blackpool will no doubt see a renaissance in years to come. Like you, I have always had a great passion for the old towns of the north that have fallen on bad times for one reason or another. I am sure the reasons for the decline in Blackpool are very complex, but on my last visit this year I was shocked by the amount of anti social behaviour and the dirtiness of the place. It’s not the most attractive place to bring my 3 year old and that is such a shame as there is so much on offer for families. Let’s hope things get better before they get worse

I disagree. Its very reason for existence has gone. Cheap flights have taken its trade. Plus the local government has made no effort to sort out the drugs problem. Who wants to visit a place surrounded by junkies?

The largest source of business and employment in China is Mining, Oil and Gas. The largest source of business and employment in the UK is THE NHS, Sainsburys and Tesco. The poor souls that are "junkies" have at one point become "customers" of both and not in a good way. Anyone who had a heart could see that. So what they want to kill themselves with drugs when their lives are a living hell? Well maybe we can make the life not such a living hell how about that? No one would really use the word "junkie" if they had someone in their family with a problem. They are not all "choosing this lifestyle" or "those people over there". Recognise your brothers. Yes some people are beyond the pale and too far gone; but some only need a hand and only get one when its to push them over. Try it. Lend a hand. the guy who turned the 18 bed guest house into a digital nomad space. i bet people look at him and don't see much, but he's a visionary. also, that Jordan guy has his head on well, too. a few people like these can really change a town's fortunes. i had looked at some small hotels in northern Spain a few years ago for something similar. i've found a few locations, but i really want to find something special. recently saw an old monastery that could be a good candidate. the thing is, you won't become rich, but it's a shame to just let these buildings go, isn't it? i'd rather subsist in an old building then be cozy in a new cookie cutter box house.

Too much short term thinking is holding the whole country back. My grandfather bought several houses after the war as part of his retirement plan. He renovated them in his spare time (he owned a successful shop in the town centre) and rented them out. He didn't make much profit, but maintained and improved them as much as he could. 30 years later, the houses he bought for a few hundred pounds sold for five figure sums each, I remember he had to pay a large sum in Capital Gains Tax on the profit. Just as importantly, several families had secure and well maintained homes for decades

I love blackpool, mostly for the childhood nostalgia it brings back while Im there, even the bitter autumn breezes are part of that feeling. Shame to see what's happening to the town. It might be me being naive but I believe as long as they have the pleasure beach, the tower, illuminations and other unique attractions there, the town wont be dying. Just gotta hope they doing do a deal with Noel Edmonds to open a new Blobbyland there

It's infuriating to hear people droning on "we need to build more houses, dig up the Green Belt", when there are hundreds of empty houses in my own market town. A listed Grade II former chapel is being renovated to create offices, while my own family Chapel, a short walk away is now flats. My grandfather bought and renovated former worker's cottages and rented them out in the 50's and 60's. I can't understand why all those beautiful houses are standing empty and derelict while agricultural land is being built on. Makes zero sense to me

I’m sympathetic to this but take issue re: agricultural land. The green belt has doubled in size - it’s disingenuous to suggest it’s all green and pleasant agricultural land when a surprising amount is grotty but ‘politically sensitive’ scrub. The chronic mismanagement - some would say petty corruption - of many of our market towns also means those homes are empty for a reason: no jobs, poor transport infrastructure to get to where the jobs actually are, higher rates of crime on average, malinvestment and fewer young businesses. It’s a vicious cycle I see in my own town in the midlands.

They are moving from another site in Blackpool, bit into the centre, the aim to to increase footfall in the centre to have a thriving centre, as well as the obvious benefits of a 'multiversity'. But yes it's changing and on the up with lots happening.

Another brilliant video. You have a wonderful way of getting people to talk to you. Towns like Blackpool need people like Jordan, who has faith and hope for the future, and Duncan has seen an opportunity coming out of Covid i.e. people working away from an office. Absolutely brilliant idea. Maybe Blackpool will never again be the holiday destination it once was (better weather in Europe, places like Dubai within easy reach) so maybe reinvent itself. I've said it before - it's better to renovate existing houses where there is existing infrastructure, rather than building rubbish new houses on green belt land.

Stayed there in an oldstyle hotel, only one road back from the beach for a week, every apartment below us was broken into and robbed during our stay, it's definitely a bit of a cheap/fun night out, but there are day zombies walking around everywhere so not the nicest place in the day, the actual city is definitely not livable yet, makes sense that you can buy property for a great price

Agreed, it's a horrible place. Full of spiceheads and druggies, like something out of the Walking Dead. I'm sorry but I wouldn't have a house there given to me. I'm hoping to move to Scarborough, another seaside town that's maybe seen better days, but the difference is that at least it's attractive and it's also full of greenery, parks, gardens and trees - all of which seem to be missing from Blackpool. The seafront is bleak and windswept and I get the impression that if you hang around too long you'll end up being started on by someone in a tracksuit. No thanks.

Blackpool has had such a low reputation for a while now so one of its main struggles will be improving people's views of the town, but I think there's a lot of potentially the beautiful architecture and the beach really will help it as it hopefully becomes a much nicer place

If artists and musicians could move in and s l o w l y begin to bring the town to life, people will come back. If this is truly a holiday town, you have to make people WANT to visit there. If they can hop a cheap flight on Ryan Air and get to another warm country cheaper than they can stay in their own city, that is what they're going to do.

Southport is similar, and worth a look, not the place it used to be, once said to be the Cheltenham of the North, but still miles better than Blackpool, however Southport has a couple of suburbs a mile or so South of the town centre, Birkdale and Ainsdale that are very up market@@wanderingturnip

Yep, the value is incredible. They're blessed with a nice location, cheap real estate, a good tram network, proximity to Manchester, and a decent amount of tourism. I went to Pleasure Beach about a year ago and I was very pleasantly surprised how nice the surrounding residential areas were. There's still plenty of grotty areas that need regeneration but I think that will come with time.

I struggle to see how Blackpool could ever regenerate. There just aren’t enough births to open schools, which is what drives a healthy society. To get young families to the area it needs to be safe. The police would need a major revamp & tools to tackle drug and alcoholism. Much easier just to focus on Lytham st Anne’s and hope it trickles out eventually. Double down on the already salvageable area.

My partner used to work for ReBlackpool back in the mid-noughties before she moved to London. She said that they had always hoped that the initial renovation of the seafront would trigger further renovation of the city. But then the 2008 crash happened. And then you had austerity. So it just never materialised.

At 18:00 the street there even in the 1980s/90s was a vibrant street full of individual nice looking guest houses. Trams actually traveled through the street and into the depot it was the side entrance bricked up and removed in the 1960s. The tracks are still in the road covered with tarmac rather than being removed.

So sad, we went to Blackpool in the eighties from Ireland and it was mesmerising driving round the streets with all the B&Bs lit up and streets buzzing. I started to watch this video expecting to see the exact people who have chronically contributed to the downfall of Blackpool i.e. landlords buying up old properties to turn them into massive HMO for the under-privileged in society and I was pleasantly surprised. Full respect to the two guys for the hotel refurb and the new DN venture. This old hotels and houses deserve a second or third life. I spent most of my family holidays in Blackpool in the 70s and it was a world away from what it is now. Would I spend more than a day there now? No way. It's sad there are ao many houses rotting away, especially with the housing shortage. Good to see the council doing up those houses, and doing a nice job. Reviving those streets will be good for Blackpool in the long run. And good to see Jordan and Stewart Lee getting businesses off the ground. But the town is not in a good state.

The problem is that Blackpool hasn't got a very good reputation anymore. Been on the decline for several decades now. I mean, would it be worth investing in that town or is it too far gone now.

The wonky house that has subsided would need underpinning (huge rods that go far into the ground) and protect from subsidence. It can immediately remedy wonky stuff and annoy others. But overall once level the doors etc will be way better. I live in Christchurch NZ, and we had to do this to thousands of homes (cost me 20k just for that) and it only took a few days. Big machinery though. Bitndefiantely the house felt way better inside, no sea sickness etc. Its worth it. And protects from anyfurther subsidence. We have quakes so has to be good.

I thought the new hotel might be part of ‘levelling up’ but it’s not. It’s a private investment group. The plans include 12 accessible units which has got to be a good thing. How many of the old buildings are accessible for wheelchair users? A good mix of new hotels and older, refurbished accommodation would be nice.

I've often wondered if there was any potential left in Blackpool. All the videos and shows I have seen made it appear as if it would take many decades to make a comeback. i bought ,renovated and flipped loads of basket case properties in the 90s ,all purchased at auction and all sold to people with mortgages(ironic as the banks wouldnt lend me money in the first place) for a massive profit ,im in me 60s now and very comfortable ,if you have a bit of cash do not be put off by the naysayers and half empties ,get something bought do it up and flip it then buy another you will not regret it.

Considering the pressure on governments regarding global warming (whether true or not).. I think prices for aviation fuel for various reasons will come under pressure thus ticket prices will be eventually priced into the stratosphere. So maybe people might consider to take at least one holiday at home which will revitalise somewhere like Blackpool.

That's says he's doing the right thing. On the subject of safety, I didn't see your boots, and picking up a bottle with out gloves. Sorry to be telling you off, but I'm old enough to be your mother. Near the start of the video I saw a white building in the background, it looked in the style of art decco, would have been interesting to see if it was. I get the feeling the property is cheap for a reason it's not just buying it but the cost of doing them up. Materials are going up all the time I think that's what happened to the guy who said come back in six months it simply got too expensive. If you do get your hotel up and running you got high energy bills and food bills so need a high turn over that's not easy.

Blackpool used to be the place we would visit for Christmas every year, we stayed in The Cliffs hotel, the same people would be there every Christmas too, these people lived all over the UK so it was like a yearly reunion. So I have some really great memories there.

As a semi-local, the council are buying up these big buildings and surround areas, purposely sitting on them for years until they acquire enough of the buildings/area to regenerate. Currently in Blackpool centre mainly Cookson Street & Talbot Road area there is a massive regeneration project underway. I believe once that has been done the promenade will start.

Cookson Street and Talbot Road have already changed massively from what they were in the 2000s, and by 2030, they will have changed further. The Council have been quite smart in not building lots more retail space, and instead in Talbot Gateway, they're building offices and educational facilities.

Live not too far from Blackpool been going all my long life , I take my grandkids often as well . I’ve seen it deteriorate over the years for various reasons . It is good to see the good put bk in the area , it’s a start as Blackpool is rich in history and a beautiful town . Get it back to its former glory 👌

Interesting video. Theres tons of improvements and investment happening in Blackpool. The newer hotels are aiming for a different market, people who will bring more money and like a bit more luxury. The town centre is doing far better than most towns and will only get better with the dwp office, multiversity in the centre, to not only improve footfall and have a thriving town centre, but with the multiversity, to make life better for residents and try and stop young people leaving only to be replaced by other towns idiots. Add to that, Blackpool central, where that big car park had been built just off central drive, that'll bring tourists in all year round and it's also been busy recently with lightpool and the illuminations, also more conferences at the winter gardens will bring people. Those shuttered shops on central drive will be transformed on the side of the car park and the other side too wehn the development is finished, as itll be ideal for food outlets etc with the increased footfall. Not sure what that guy was on about in the last video, saying that other bit will be transformed and it wasnt. There's loads happening and it all adds up to trying to improve things and stop the cycle of deprivation by making it a better place for all. The whole of central drive is set for redevelopment at some point, near the football stadium too. Bit by bit it's happening and investment is really coming in. Blackpool has its big issues but also has the upsides to counter that, where many places have many of the same issues, but little of the upsides and beautiful coast. It's on the up. One last thing to remember is Blackpool has a town centre and many miles of front and back streets just off the front to try and make nice for millions of people, it's a hell of a big area. So in many ways it's a bit unfairly judged, as if you went off into a random towns backstreets miles from the centre you'd see all sorts, most are unlikely to venture out of the centre of somewhere else

I agree. Blackpool has several regeneration programmes in progress or about to start. It is an unfair reflection of the progress and ongoing development in the town.

This reminds me of the £1 houses Liverpool was selling for people to do up a few years back. It makes sense as they're all just sitting there rotting otherwise, so better to get the young involved to revitalise, who can't afford anything else decent. Creatives, artists, musicians, etc. don't earn a lot but a new vibe and character to an area. Brighton was similar years ago but obviously now sought after, due to the same reasons.
