Awesome piece of engineering. This wankel sounds really sick
@DMRH6918 жыл бұрын
Yes, its direct drive. Max rpm (9000) winds out to just over 200km/h. A feature story about it was done in ZOOM magaine (Australia) back in 2004.

Built by Xtreme rotaries in MEL, VIC. they compete at the "Southern-80" classic each year & kick serious V8 supercharged arse. Had to keep going up through the catergories voluntarily as they where making lesser V8's (eg, blown 350 Chev's) look quite average. Now in the open class against blown Alchohol slurping 7lt big blocks (last i heard) & still managing to make it to the top end of the field. Not bad for a 2lt engine..........ha ha ha

Read all the comments. Somewhere in there the actual owner of this boat opined. Think he said 118 mph was max.

I love rotary engines, they seem to wind up forever. One thing though, you do have an issue with walk even though you do a masterful job of keeping up with it, someday that is going to bite you,hard. I'd put some extended trim tabs out there or change the V configuration to present a bit more flat across the stern. If you are out of the water except for your drive you may need to take some (depth)bite out but increase your thrust profile to go faster safer.A great craft at any estimate. WFO!

I would have no idea. I found this vid on another website many years ago when KZbin was in its infancy. However, if you scan the comments from a while back, the owner of this boat commented on it. You can find his page from there and email him.

Just a historic anecdote: End of the 60s Wankel ventured into exploring marine motors for leisure boats. My parents had a sailboat (Mistrelle zeilboot, 9 meter, 3 ton, made by BOWA in Holland) that had one of the pre-series of this little marine wankel with one rotary piston. On behalf of Mr. Wankel the boat was trucked from Holland to a boat show in Friedrichshafen (Lake Constance) and back to Holland. Mr. Wankel came on board and discussed the engine with my father (engineer). I was there as a little boy and saw Mr. Wankel. Unfortunately they never were able to fix the cooling issues with water cooling. My parents went through 4 or 5 replacement motors and Wankel gave up and never produced this marine engine in production quantities. It was about 1/2 the weight of a comparable diesel with the same power output (I don't remember, 20 or 24 DIN PS) I'd love to know if there is anyone else who has more info concerning this marine Wankel. Greetings from Ohio

Fastest boat I have ever ridden in. We did 175km/h on choppy Port Phillip bay (MEL-AUS) the accelleration was awesome, the sound was sexual. The experience was forever. This vid was on a nice flat lake, they should have hit redline at around 210km/h....

Our bass boat did 82mph, that was STUPID! Couldn't imagine 105, let alone 118, very nice.

@philr300 Well, there's also a huge turbo hanging off the side of the rotary; look right behind the intake pod filter on the left of your screen.

Imagine if you hit a wake at that speed. I was on a 750cc jet ski and hit a boat wake from the side while making a turn and that flipped me and the jet ski caught air. Hell of a ride and would have been a hell of a video if we'd had today's helmet camera back then.

What is the difference between a hull like yours and a vintage-style water ski boat? I’m curious because I’ve got an ‘89 tournament water ski boat that I’d like to convert to more of a high speed vessel since I don’t ski anymore.

I have several advanced concept, commercial/military, flying work boat designs, (that are NOT hovercraft, or air boats), and i am wondering if the output of that type of Wankel engine could possibly be geared to operate both a water propeller, and an air propeller, and be clutched so that they could run simultaneously, and independently ???. I've got to learn more about those types of engines.
@skullfracture2 Жыл бұрын
Might bog down too much at low rpm under the type of load you described, even with a large gear reduction. The fuel consumption with rotary engines is atrocious. That’s why they aren’t produced commercially anymore.

that works surprisingly well. I always thought jet drives worked off of torque. apparently lots of rpms and turbo fueled hp gets the job done too. can't believe the top end that thing has you must be in the 120mph range yes?
@unsane5 жыл бұрын
It's a V-drive, not a jet pump. The owner commented years ago, I think the boat could top out around 118 if I remember him correctly. People water ski behind these at those speeds. The sport is big in Australia.
