If only it was that simple. You can easily stack the housings and "irons", but the shaft will be almost impossible to make without some serious equippment and knowledge. When you go beyond two rotors the shaft needs to be made in several parts that go together during assembly. You would also need some sort og bearing support in the middle for the shaft. JohnnyQ90 managed to make a 2 rotor shaft himself after several tries and he has years and years of experience with machining small parts. A 3 or 4 rotor shaft would probably be 5 times for dufficult than the 2 rotor shaft he made.

Most rotaries don't make good cold compression, the internal operating temps are high especially around the exhaust ports so they have to design them so that the clearances are right at operating temp. Piston engines get around this with ring gap, Mazda uses spring loaded corner seals to give the apex seals space to expand. Also like you said, no side seals but it might just not be feasible to make side seals for something this small. Even in a 13b the side seals are thin and fragile, they would probably look like strands of hair for this thing lol. Looks like there's thin metal plates that go between the rotor and 'irons' that may be an attempt to create some sort of consumable side seal that covers the entire side of the rotor face instead of being recessed into the rotor itself. Probably good enough for something like this, seemed like it was ripping pretty good once it got warmed up. Probably didn't help that he disassembled it, dropped some pieces, then put it back together in a dirty environment. Even a tiny bit of grit would clear itself out but put scratches in all the sealing surfaces on its way through...
@WarpedYT2 жыл бұрын
@@Joebobinator your dead on about everything except the disassembly, see what I didn't show was I tried 30 times to start this engine, it wouldn't start had absolutely no compression, then I proceeded to disassemble the engine and I found a completely seized Apex seal. None of the parts were dropped. But yeah I'm going to upload that as a separate video on my other channel and share it here.
@williamkillingsworth26192 жыл бұрын
In this micro application I wonder if a one piece circular side seal could work to help mitigate the blow by and add compression, similar in position to the oil seals on a 13b. It could sit just inside the bottom edge of the apex seal slot. Trevor, Mazda used 2 and 3 piece apex seals in the majority of their production engines which allowed the seal to cope with thermal expansion and self clearanced between the irons/side plates. The corner seals where there because the side and apex seal had too much dissimilar movement and allowed tighter clearance. The important tolerances on 2 and 3 piece seal engines arethe apex slot to apex seal, the side seal to corner seal, and the corner seal to corner seal slot. I used to build 13bs and some what reliably made around 450rwhp with them on pump gas. Now with a 1 piece seal like was used in 12A and ceramics in racing applications you had to clearance the apex seal to the rotor housing width. But 2a d 3 piece seals self clearanced.

@Joebobinator2 жыл бұрын
@@subifudriftkings Agreed, as the owner of a few rotaries and currently an Rx8 at ~250k miles with 3 engine rebuilds all of this is normal. The internal clearances don't tighten up until it's warm so they hate cold starts even with modern computerized fuel injection. This looks like a pretty rudimentary carburetor setup, of course it's gonna hate starting. Also I was cringing the whole time he ripped it apart in a filthy environment, dirty hands, dropping parts, not bolting things back together right, and expecting it to run perfectly? The exhaust fell off ffs, that's not "rotaries suck lolol" that's you not bolting shit together. Also super bad for the exhaust ports which are already the weak point for most rotaries, the heat buildup is bad enough even with good header flow. Also, please center that flywheel and put either a heavier one or some load on the engine. This is like taking an LS, leaving the balancer and flywheel off, removing the rpm limiter from the tune, then starting it with your foot on the floor and expecting it to go well. If you want to spin anything to 1000 rpm let alone 30,000 rpm you had better make sure it's balanced. This little engine is cool but man this guy is handling it poorly. Even if it wasn't a rotary he should take a little better care of it especially for a demonstration. Also their technical manual says it's only supposed to run to 16,500 rpm. Go take a Honda motor, rip it apart in a sandbox, put it back together just enough to run, then spin it to 15,000 rpm and see what happens...

Its probably just about as expensive to turbocharge them, just the exhaust manifold was like $3k a year ago (its since gone down a lot, and yeah you could weld one yourself but I'm referring to just bolt together options). Love your work mate, great stuff, when you got it on a lower idle that lumpy rotor sound was identical to the road cars. While it's still nearly new you might want to measure up and machine a few rotor housings as spares, better apex seals will make it run much better but it will also wear out your housings faster

Pretty cool! Looks like you need to get some sort of exhaust seal going on there with all that ooz. EDIT: Sounds like it's WAY too rich. If you get the right air fuel ratio as well as better compression, it would help the rpms. But 30,000???? That's sick!
@martinhirsch94 Жыл бұрын
Rotary engine speed specifications are defined differently than on other motor types. On a typical rotary there are three combustion events for each revolution of the crankshaft. While there may be 30,000 combustion events per minute for this demo, the actual RPMs of the crankshaft will be one third of that... 10,000 RPMs.
@disruptivegarage Жыл бұрын
@@martinhirsch94 sorry my dude but the output ratio of the engine 1:3 meaning the crankshaft turns 3 times as fast as the engine. so the crank is doing 30k and the engine is doing 10k

I would have taken it apart after running it. I feel it was compromised from being taken apart as the head surface torque, gaskets, flywheel position, Apex seals and springs are very sensitive. Would be nice to see one that hasn't been tampered with run.
@WarpedYT2 жыл бұрын
One thing everybody on KZbin is teaching me I can't leave any Stones unturned. So I did run it before taking it apart, or at least I tried, the only reason I took it apart is because it didn't have any compression and a Apex seal was stuck. Guarantee you I can make this engine run better than it comes from the factory. I have built hundreds of rotary engines including peripheral port and Bridgeport, this engine is a piece of cake compared to a real rotary that has corner seal side seals two-piece Apex seals with springs, you have no idea unless you've actually built a real rotary, the seals are a pain in the butt. This engine piece of cake there's really nothing you can mess up unless you lose some parts.
@GFTPSMP2 жыл бұрын
@@WarpedYT , Matt, how tight was your engine as received? Mine has zero chance of running as the stainless plates are sprung inward towards the rotor. This engine needs a major overhaul before it can seal properly and run as intended. What happened to your cooling fittings?

I always wonder how much actual electricity you can make from tiny motors.
@TheExplosiveGuy2 жыл бұрын
There are some pretty spicy mini generators out there, using gas turbine engines, some of them can make upwards of 10,000 watts in a unit the size of an 18 pack of beer. Spendy AF though.
@mikesalive2 жыл бұрын
Motors like this do not make electricity, they spin wheels. However, you could attach a small generator to the output shaft and drive it. He said this motor generates 0.7 of a horsepower. 1hp = 754 watts, so that's around 520 watts output... shove that into a small generator at whatever efficiency and you'd end up with something lower than 520 watts. So theoretically you could generate enough to run a few light bulbs or a diy electric drill. That being said, it would be more efficient to attach a drill bit directly to the output shaft of the motor and do some damage against a wall like that. You could make a great little chainsaw :P
@TheExplosiveGuy2 жыл бұрын
@@mikesalive three phase brushless motors are excellent generators, what are you talking about? They require extra components to make use of it to convert it into usable power but they certainly do work. That's how regenerative braking works in electric cars, the motor gets turned by the wheels which generates power to charge the batteries.
