I have this problem where I can't leave a yard sale without buying something. I convince myself it's rude to look through someone's stuff, then walk away with nothing. In my head, it comes across as, "yuck...your junk is garbage." Hahaha. I'm sure they don't think I think that but I keep myself awake at night worrying. Lmao. I'm also terrible at bargaining. I'm bad to say, "are you sure that's all you want for "xyz"?!" 🤣

Oh my god, based on an outfit I was wearing a lady ran into her home and brought me a whole bin of items. She said I had to have them and she was waiting on the perfect person to give them too. I was certain with the story she told me about them the stuff was haunted, but so far so good.

I used to go yard saling with my mom all the time, we would use garage sale finder and a local free paper to plan a route for yard sales every Saturday. We unfortunately lost my mom to cancer in December 2021, so I haven’t gone much since. But lo and behold one day last summer my boyfriend and I are out and see a yard sale sign, and decide to go. This is the first yard sale I went to after my mom passed, and they had a like 8” ceramic chipmunk statue for sale. My mom always fed the chipmunk that lives in our backyard, she loved the little guy, and we all have an association of chipmunks with my mom. Of course I had to buy it, and now he sits on a shelf in my room next to her urn 💜

We love a good yard sale! My best tip: Pack a big ol water bottle with ice in it if you go by car. The car gets hot, but the water will be nice and refreshing. All that running around catches up quick.

I ran a yard sale a few years ago where the only advertising I did was put up signs around the neighborhood. The first person to show up marched over to me and yelled at me that I should have listed my sale on Facebook. So I was like, "well obviously you found us anyway." My other favorite comment was, "looks like you already sold all the good stuff." 😂 People can be so charming.

Okay, so I found my favorite violin for $50 at a yard sale. This thing sounds as good as my $2000 dollar violin, and has better projection and a more unique and darker tone imo. It was two years ago in June, and because the lake where I live has a yard sale weekend before big trash day (also, yard sales typically happen around the same time as big trash days, and sometimes people will just throw out furniture/furniture parts. It's pretty hit or miss, but it's still an experience) and it was the end of the Saturday, and i had made my way fully around the lake and was now at the neighborhood closest to mine. I pulled up to a couple guys selling stuff out of their garage/workshop, and looked around. Pretty standard stuff for the looks of the place, i.e. fishing gear/tackle, hand tools, old power tools, etc. And then I see a violin case on the ground. And I look around, and then at these guys. Neither of them play the fiddle. My money was on it being a toolbox, especially with the think layer of garage dust (and sawdust). One of the guys sees me noticing it, and says "oh, that's a fiddle, you interested?" Well, that's one way to get a fiddler interested in something. So I open the case. There is indeed a fiddle. It is missing all but one string, but it doesn't have any real cracks in the body, and any other damage is superficial. And I pluck the one remaining string. And it *rings*. That was one of the most magical moments of my life. Anyway, I love it. It's such a good instrument. And it is why I'm never skipping yardsale weekends if I can help it.

Yes that was me across the lake in Canada, waving at you! I broke my leg last year but still had to go to garage sales, on crutches. I saw one of those old lady walkers that was brand new ($400 retail) for $50. I thought it might be handy with my broken leg. When I asked how much I just said ok that is out of my budget thanks anyway. Then the lady came over from the house looked me over on my crutches and being all pathetic and all, and said "Here dear you can have it for $10 and I will put it in your car for you! score

Here’s my tip: old timey soup serving dishes with lids make great cookie jars. They’re often extravagant and sculptural if you have the shelf space to display them and... have space for many and/or several kinds of cookies at once! (Actual cookie jars are often disappointingly small, methinks.) Just get one without a divet for the spoon so there isn’t a point of egress.

When I was a kid, we would go to the cheap-looking neighborhoods when looking for clothes. You might be surprised how many people are willing to spend a lot of money on clothes when they can only afford to live in is a broken down trailer. Then when their kids grew out of their very nice clothes, we would buy them at their yard sale for .50 a shirt and .75 for a pair of pants. I really hope this didn’t come across as mean, this is just how we did things growing up; the cheap neighborhoods really did have the best stuff.

A use for cute clip on earings that may not be super comfy is as collar clips (on the points of shirt collars), sort of like dress clips, only on shirt/blouse collars. My daughter wears them that way. Vintage or unusual ones are super fun and interesting.

As If I didn’t already love you, hard relate on the clip-ons! I tried the Claire’s piercings a few times and they never took. I waited until my early 30s bc $$ to get my ears properly pierced at a tattoo place, so I was always looking for good clip-one. It was especially tragic bc ive ALWAYS been obsessed with earrings. I remember sitting in class in like 2nd grade just obsessively thinking about how earrings move and stimming lol and I still do

Yesss, please release a clip on earring line!! My ear holes were stretched out a bit when I was 21 bc I decided to get size 0 gauges. Which I liked but lasted for a little while cuz I missed wearing pretty earrings. My ear holes have pretty much gone back to normal at this point but for obvious reasons my ear holes don’t look the same when I put on earrings, especially heavier ones. Then there was the struggle with regular earrings because every time I would greet a friend with a hug, the earring would stab me in the back of the ear. So painful😵💫 I’ve opted for inset and hidden clasp earrings at this point. This is a long ass paragraph lol but I just have to say that as soon as you mentioned clip on’s; my mind brought me back to when I used to try on my mom’s pretty clip on collection😊 I love this idea Kathleen, and would love to see what you come up with!!

What's wrong with me? It was technically a barn sale...but same thing. OH MY GOSH!!!! My family gets so irritated with me over the fact that they've tried to teach me euchre so many times and I never can seem to catch on, and just have no interest in it. They play for hours and hours. Charity shops are nice, but omg how I miss American thrift stores/antique malls/garage sales and I now live vicariously through you lol. Question, are you going to the Hilltop Bean Dinner this Saturday? Have you ever been? If not, you should, it's not quite what it was back when I was a kid, but it's such a historic community event.
