With the information that he accelerated the timeline for film red... I think the truth is actually worse, lol. Oda is always bad at managing time in his series, so my guess is that he actually *didn't* accelerate the timeline until he was panicking like a student with a project due the next morning, and had to *super* accelerate the end of wano in the last couple months. I think this, because really, it was only the final few chapters that felt *badly* rushed. It seemed like, if oda had left a few bits of the raid on the cutting room floor here and there, we coulda actually got a satisfying ending. Yes, he probably feels worse than anyone. Like that hypothetical student, showing up to school with an incomplete project

The deadline oda had to meet was putting shanks on the page before film red, so everything after that isn't so much in question of being rushed. I agree with you that some parts dragged, and that's what's frustrating about it. It could have been streamlined more in some parts to allow for the finale to have been more fleshed out. I can give you an outline of the things I would have liked to see, but it's a bunch of writing I dont wanna do unless you'd like to hear about it lol

I feel like a big reason why Crocodile was such a good villain was because he was the first to actually beat Luffy twice before Luffy finally put him down. That and he had good buildup in the previous islands with Baroque Works.

It was the writing. I think people don't discriminate between what the author has told about the character and how the author reinforced those ideas for the readers. Sir Crocodile felt like a real threat because of the many great writing decisions that Oda made. He makes so that Crocodile is always one step ahead of our heroes. He felt unstoppable. Oda just doesn't say that "Crocodile is a criminal mastermind and Shichibukai". He also reinforced those ideas so that the characterization of his character felt genuine and carry a lot of weight. With Kaido, its different. It felt disappointing because Oda was not able to deliver what he had established about Kaido's character. He felt like an obstacle, a wall, rather than an actual threat that could bite back hard.

in my opinion wano has some of the best highs of the entire series, He Laughed and gear 5 are so amazing it’s hard to brush off all those good moments to call it a bad arc just because some things didn’t get delivered on, i loved kaido, while he may not have gotten an insane backstory we already know everything about him, who he is, his true goals, what drives him and it really works for me, and the roger flashback with the “he laughed” panel might just be the best moment in the entire series for me

I agree with you on really enjoying the Law/Kidd vs Big Mom fight, mostly because I really expected one/multiple Straw Hats to defeat her but they weren't even involved in her end defeat. Plus Kidd and Law's combined attacks were just cool and creative. Really, all the end fights for the Straw Hats were great too, but Sanji's awakening did feel the most rushed to me.

1037 is honestly still my fav chapter from Wano. Just straight up, raw, testosterone fueled battle. Kaido shifting through his drunk phases and Luffy struggling to handle Kaido’s crazy tactics. Top moment: oden seeing his precious toki hurt. We spent so much time with oden and saw his generous and adventurous side. We saw him build everything from scratch his home,his followers, his family. He never really bothered to try to kill orochi because of the threat of Kaido. They really took his kindness as weakness and Orochi really tried to fuck around and found out. My man was FURIOUS

Just gotta say, the artists interpretation of merphys arc tier lists is one of the first ones I’ve seen that I agree with so much! A couple of small things I might move around and a big disagreements about long ring long land, but I think that tier list mostly fits my opinions, and I feel like there are several things in there I don’t tend to here that often from one piece readers

Dressrosa is Wano done right imo. The only thing I liked better in Wano than Dressrosa is the new gear 5 reveal (hell it was so good it made me retroactively like gear 4). For me Wano is easily one of the worst (major) arcs in One Piece even if had really good moments, all thanks to how act 3 dragged on and was somehow also rushed. It feels like a setup arc instead of the climax of a saga we've been in for 10+ years.

So far whole cake islands lows are a lot lower than any of wano. The 5 minute recaps every episode and big mom saying MAMA MAMA. And WEDDING CAAAAAKE for twenty episodes got real old real fast. Which sucks because the highs for whole cake rival the highs in wano. Sanji crying in the rain, fighting Luffy, saving his family, the good parts of Luffy vs kata. BROOKE. They're up there almost as good as Yasuie's death, the udon uprising, Zoro vs Killer, and the raid fights.

Wano is a weird arc. The more I think about it the more I love it. It's definitely a top 5 arc for me. All of the Momo scenes hit me super hard. He has by far the best character arc in the entire series. After Wano, Momo became a top 5 character to me. Chapter 1051 is probably the most cinematic and one of the best chapters in the series. Gear 5 is the best power up I've ever seen and the Nika reveal didn't bother me at all. Wano has so many amazing moments, amazing storytelling and the best fights in the series. The negatives of Wano are definitely real. The end was super rushed. After the Momo speech it felt like Oda wanted to just get out of there and move on. Greenbull and Shanks show up and just leave after 5 minutes. Made very little sense to me. I was a massive fan of One Piece before Wano. I've been reading for like a decade now. But Wano renewed my love for the series. After Dressrosa and Whole Cake I still had faith in Oda. But my enjoyment of the series was going down very slightly. Wano was awesome and seems like the most important arc in the series so far. I can't wait for the Final Saga!

I have been reading since 1999 and I have the exact opposite thoughts and feelings about Wano. I have waited since the time skip like 10 years ago, every arc in the New World built up toward Wano at some level, Whole Cake was inconclusive and Dressrosa’s crew split are all heavily revolved around elements leading to Wano. To have Wano itself dropping the ball on so many things setup before and during the arc itself, then bloated it with Yamato, Gyukimaru (still has more of a backstory than Kaido), Hiyori, etc that ate up so much screen time compared to Strawhats themselves. That and the fights, Zoro hasn’t had a legitimately challenging fight since Kaku! Every opponent has been annoyance to him since then, for over 10 years! To have Zoro spanking King essentially out of annoyance after his Conqueror Haki power up, essentially out of annoyance like he did Pica and Kaku is huge disappointment. This applies to the rest of Strawhat fights, or the lack thereof for some, none actually pushed them. The fact Robin’s fight is so popular is indicative how low the bar is for Strawhat fights in the arc. Kid and Law vs Big Mom is at best inconclusive with advantage going to their tag team and the bombs macguffin. I get it, Luffy got his shine as he always does, Gear 5 is amazing, I can live on the moments, but everything else handled so poorly especially by Oda writing standards is shocking and robbed all substance from the arc.

Wano must hit differently when you're binging it. I'm right at Odens backstory and man. Wano is A tier so far. I came into it with high expectations and it's been hilarious, gut punching, doesn't feel like useless bloat as much as previous arcs, and again funny. I love that in the beginning of Wano Sanji punches a nobleman over Otoko’s Soba noodles. She says she’s never eaten anything like it and she’s usually starving. Cut to Luffy vs Kaido when Kaido asks Luffy “what kind of world will you make?” And he says “ONE WHERE MY FRIENDS CAN EAT AS MUCH AS THEY WANT” it’s those kind of small pay offs for me that make this story so great.

To me the biggest thing that Doflamingo and Crocodile has that Kaido doesn't have is Ambition. Doffy and Croc have goals and their sights set on the horizon. They're cocky in a self-assured kind of way. While Kaido is living his Bad Ending: He is strong, and knows this as fact, but doesn't channel this into any real goal in my eyes. It's sad, and a little flat. An interesting character to be sure, but not as engaging to me. That's why the most compelling parts of him are the flashbacks (when he did have ambition) and his enjoyment of being defeated

Wano was a major shift for me. I was waiting for a huge revelation about the relation between seastones and devil fruits, an back story for the Dragon slayer, a bit more about Zoro, how did Wano geography came to be etc. But since Haki became the new trend I guess changes were necessary...

Something that just now occurred to me is that Big Mom's defeat was disappointing in an unexpected way: it invalidated Luffy's promise to Katakuri. Big Mom's defeat not only didn't involve Luffy returning to Whole Cake Island to defeat her, it didn't even involve Luffy at all. So, in the end, Katakuri surrendered to Luffy for - well, not exactly NOTHING, since the raid likely wouldn't have happened at all without Luffy, but close to nothing.
