As a c3 Corvette owner who battles most of the issues he talked about, these are very good tips and mods sounds like it would really help too... I never thought if the flow being too low at idle, you guys are the jack of all trades!!

Really liked the classic car advice as a 70s Corvette owner who is making some of these decisions now. About 4 years ago, I wasn't ready to take the plunge on fuel injection so I replaced my early 90s vintage Holley carb with a modern Quick Fuel HR-series carb after reading about 21st century carb design improvements. It runs much better and doesn't seem to mind sporadic driving. Doing some cooling system upgrades now with a quality aluminum radiator and Edelbrock water pump. The starter quality info (with a brand to look into) was really interesting, as were the other tips. I find the classic car topics super helpful and interesting. Knowing how to prioritize some of these projects and the knowledgeable advice about what mods are worth considering seem like they'd make a great playlist (I'm pondering Wilwood calipers as an upgrade now). Thanks for taking the time to make this.

For my bikes i run stabilizer for 50 miles or so before i park them for the winter, put a battery tender on them for storage too. Then whe i get them out i run seafoam thru the next tank of fuel. Keeps the jets clean and havent had any problems in the last 15 years ive been working on them. For fuel i jection i put some 2stroke or diesel in the fuel a couple times a year, maybe a half cup in 5 gallons. Not enough to smoke but enough to lube up the injectors and the fuel pump gerotor and orings

@@stephencurry8552 Millions of auto drivers, thousands of motorcycle owners disagree. Out of all of these people who've owned and operated combustion engines of various sizes and types, I'm sure a very low minority would express how they'd rather have carburetors, points and condensers, manual chokes. Driving in heat. Driving in extreme cold. Driving in soggy foggy humidity. Operating with sometimes less than ideal fuel in the tank. I can think of a massive amount of troubles and delays and broken down vehicles that have been entirely bypassed as a result of modern fuel delivery systems in vehicles. Change the context if you want (EMP, Mad Max, scarcity, supply chains, yadda yadda), but as a whole and under every circumstance, electronic fuel injection absolutely blows analogue into the weeds.

Appreciate all the insights as always. Timing and proper fuel delivery sure helped on my all original, 42,000 mile, 1954 Ford Customline 👍 Still 6 volt positive ground, electric fuel pump to prime, few stabs on the throttle, and it fires right up. 😊

Awesome video. I remember driving my dad's old buick, it was like performing an arcane ritual to get the thing to start in the winter. Pump it 10 times, carefully hold down the gas just the right amount, crank it and hope for the best. When it started it sounded like it was awakening from a 100 year slumber, all sorts of ungodly whining and grinding. The other old cars we had were not as bad, but I do enjoy electronic fuel injection!

I have a peculiar issue with an '02 LS1 Camaro related to slow/no starts in a very specific situation: If the car has been sitting for a while, whether it be overnight or a week, it'll start fine fairly quickly from cold. If I've been driving it for a while, shut it off, then start it back up within a few minutes up to, say, 10-15 minutes, it'll be fine, and if I drive for a while and shut it off, then don't come back for a few hours (basically it cools down), it'll also start fine. HOWEVER, there is an odd window where if I've been driving and the car gets up to temp, and I shut it off and return within 30-60 minutes (loosely speaking), it almost certainly won't fire over. From there though, if I switch the key to the fully-off position, then to accessory (you can hear the fuel pump prime again), it will fire up almost immediately. The car does not appear to suffer any fuel starvation issues while driving, however the fuel pump has not been replaced in the entire time I've owned it, which has been 13-14 years of the 22-23 years it has existed, so unless the first owner replaced it early on, it is likely the factory pump. Is there something glaringly obvious that these symptoms would indicate? Or if nothing else, do any further trouble-shooting steps come to mind based on those symptoms?

Heat-soak in the newer starter motors has been a thought in the back of my head. I haven't heard many people mention it in a while. They don't make them like they used to. I loved the video; it was really detailed and well put-together.

I installed a Mikuni carb on my '88 883 sportster hugger back when it was new. Mikuni made carbs for Harleys. Sportsters came with 40mm cv carbs. The Mikuni carb carburated beautifully and the engine needed only 1/4 turn to fire up. My first car that i bought from my brother was a '64 Pontiac Lemans with the 326 cu. engine. He liked to flip the air cleaner lid upside down because under full throttle the secondaries would make a neat sound however the engine backfired on him and burnt the hood paint job. Also, back when I worked at a service station I used ether to start one customer's car. The engine backfired and the carb caught on fire however i used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire. It's good practice to know where your fire extinguishers are stationed and already have that planned out in your head

Grateful for the work you put into this channel OJ. As a young lad, living in the snow belt of Southwestern Ontario Canada, I would be asked to go start the car in the winter to let it warm up. (1970 Chrysler 300 Convertible) My mother showed me how, to very slowly press the gas pedal down all the way to the floor, then just as slowly allow it to return to resting position. Slowly means SLOW. This always worked, it had a 440, it also worked for my first car, a 1974 Plymouth Satellite 2 door with a 318/2bbl. It would take only a split second to fire up, every time. I do involuntarily cringe when I see someone stomping the gas pedal when starting a nice mopar.

I havent tried with carbed cars and think it may not work and may cause problems, but on my efi cars i always rev the engine to like 3k and turn off the ignition allowing the engine to rotate several times around after the fuel injectors stop injecting. This gives you only air in your cylinders and upon cranking you get the proper fuel amount and fuel timing introduced in the cylinder and "helps" prevent knock on startup(depends on ignition setup. Ever hear 2000s chevy suburbans knock on startup? clack!). On hot days, not revving at shutdown, startup with a heat soaked starter i notice the engine stumbling when starting vs a clean startup(rev when shutting off). Many people have probably heard guys in the pits at the track rev their engine before shutoff also for example.

Hi OJ and crew! Older starters have one benefit actually if you buy from NAPA you can just take it back and get a new one no questions asked :) What's the real pain is perfectly shimming a aftermarket starter. (It would be nice if you expanded on this part a bit in the video!) All in all the shimming made me go back to the original starter along with the traditional starting sound. Yes, high torque starters crank faster but they are less forgiving at your flywheel if you know what I mean. For the cooling system, would it make sense to just change the thermostat to a 160 degree vs a standard 180 for this instance instead of adding the additional electric fan? This will give you that temperature buffer that you are looking for at idle.

Meh, as long as I don't burn out the starter, I'd rather get some oil flowing from a little longer crank. Very cold winter temperature starts might be an exception, where the battery is struggling already, so I'm not suggesting these tips aren't a good idea, just that I still don't want as fast as possible a startup.

The fuel pump is a liquid pump if it gets fluid it will pump if there is vapor between the pump and carb but the pump has liquid the fuel will push the vapor quickly out the carb vent this may cause a over rich condition however it will be vapor rich and not as severe as a liquid over rich condition. If there is a vapor lock between the tank and the pump with an fuel expansion rate of around 700 to 1 in volume when the vapor is generated before the engine mounted pump it will push the liquid back to the tank, the cause is almost always caused by the exhaust system thru convection, missing shield or exhaust leak. The rear mount pump solves this issue unless the exhaust leak is large. There have been many magazines that cover this issue with ways to "prevent" the condition between the pump and carb however this is not the place to look, this can be proven by how fast the fuel will pump if a person leaves off the fuel line from the carb and cranks the engine, fuel will cover the engine bay in seconds with the factory mechanical pump, hope this helps someone.

1. Battery 2. Reduction gear starter 3. Fuel line bleed back control valve close to carburetor bowl 4. Proper ignition coil - higher power coil is not going to improve performance or cold starts! That’s marketing BS Set your fan to run for 10 minutes after engine shut down to reduce heat soak. Use non-ethanol fuel! It won’t evaporate in the fuel lines.
