Reparations seem like a good idea to those who have never taken any personal responsibility for their own mistakes! No one put a silver spoon in my mouth when I was born but, through the Grace of God, I have learned humility. I highly recommend it !

Damn, Lost respect for Sowell 😢.. nothing was like chattel slavery .. the system that was created from it owe, not specific “white ppl from today” & we aren’t talking about the world, we are talking specifically America, who is a wealthy nation .. not only that, we gave reparation to Japanese, we send billions to other countries etc… but I’m off this topic because I can battle logic but I know I’ll lose to cognitive dissonance … Lastly, to answer cuz question - how you rid yourself of the guilt - wash your hands with the “others” who want out of the system to create their own - put together a severance package (reparations) and let them do their own thing . Boom! Damn I can hear that cog dissonance crying salty tears 😂

@desbishop55 Yeah, chattel slavery was different. It could have been like the Arab slave trade where they didn't rape the women and castrated all the men. That's why they don't have too much African blood in the place on earth that the most Africans spent their lives being slaves. So I ask you would you have preferred the old way of slavery? No one would be here to complain or collect reparations. The Japanese was a little different. For one main reason the people who took their possessions still had them and the people that were stolen from were still alive. The majority of white people who live in America, ancestors came after slavery was illegal. Sadly enough the US government has paid reparations for slavery. They paid the fucking slave owners smh. That's crazy.

Fun fact, there are more slaves today than there has ever been. Like making alcohol or making drugs illegal didn't stop the practice. Today, you will find more people who are forced to work and don't get to enjoy the "fruits of their labors." By talking as if it is in the past, we ignore the problem where it still exists.
@larrycox6614

I agree with you, but can you quantify your statement for those who want to posit that stance?
@aleue
@aleue 2 ай бұрын
@larrycox6614 difficult to put a number on it as it is an underground economy/market. The term slavery is a term that needs to be defined ( like Feminism, capitalism, socialism, communism, ect) what specifically are we talking about? Do we count the wages collected by the government as government run slavery as the benefit from the labor of their citizens? China isn't reporting its free labor. 40k Nazi work camp had millions that worked and didn't get paid long after slavery was made illegal. The numbers that died in the gulags of the USSR work cams were even more than in NAZI camps. Today in Libya, you can purchase a man for 200$ for the purpose of free work ( videos of this are online). How many have been sold, and how many places are like this? I don't know, but with the population boom that happened since slavery was abolished in the 1860s and the number of female sex slaves that have been freeed, we all know the numbers are greater today than they ever were. If I quantified it; it would be a wild @ss quess. To start counting, we would have to agree on what a slave is.

Sometimes there is a fine line between an indenture and slavery. I would say that most of these unfortunate people started off by accepting an indenture agreement while the unscrupulous trafficker altered the deal afterwards so that the indenture effectively cannot be repaid in any way, i.e. leading up in slavery.

The problem with generational resentment is that almost every single group of people has some reason to feel resentment. It just depends on how far you go back. Should the rest of Europe still hold a grudge against France because of Napoleon? Should Mexico resent America because the southwest used to be part of their country? Should Chinese people hate Mongolia because of the Khans? The list can go on and on endlessly. Almost every group has been conquered, enslaved or subjugated by a foreign power at one point in history. Almost every group has committed their own share of conquering, enslaving and subjugating at one point in history. Eventually people have to move on from the past. No, they shouldn't forget it, but they should progress past it. Holding onto resentment on a mass scale is only damaging. Classifying a group of millions of people as perpetual victims is only damaging. Infantilizing a group of millions of people is only damaging.

I came across a process of reparation for jews whose grandparents were victims of the nazis ( i had to analyze the tax aspects). To be eligible for reparation, its not enough that you show your ancestor was persecuted, tortured and imprisoned in a concentration camp. The german government requires that the applicant demonstrates specifically the nature and value of the assets that were seized by the nazis.

Why are reparations only viewed in a certain way when they're applied to Black Americans? We're talking about America, where every other group has received reparations. Why is that the case? Like, stop it. That is nothing but racist. It's never surprising to hear men like him talk about Black Americans in a world where the notion that Black is less than exists. However, Black culture being the most copied is both stressful and empowering. Other racial groups in America have received reparations or similar benefits, yet when it comes to Black Americans, the conversation often turns negative. Immigrants, for example, sometimes receive financial assistance upon arrival, while Black Americans continue to wait for reparations for historical injustices they endured. This disparity highlights a double standard where immigrants are often seen as deserving of aid, while Black Americans are vilified or criminalized for seeking similar redress. Despite facing similar challenges, immigrants fled their problems, whereas Black Americans have remained to fight for justice and equality in their own country. This ongoing struggle underscores the need for reparations as a means of addressing the historical and systemic inequities faced by Black communities. It's important to remember that various groups in America have received some form of reparations or redress, including: * Japanese Americans: Received financial compensation and a formal apology for their internment during World War II. * Native Americans: Received land, financial settlements, and other benefits as part of various treaties and agreements, although these often fall short of full reparations for historical injustices. * Chinese Americans: Received a formal apology and limited financial compensation for those affected by the Chinese Exclusion Act. * Italian Americans: Received an apology and some compensation for those unjustly interned during World War II. These examples highlight the inconsistency in how reparations are viewed and applied depending on the racial group involved. It emphasizes the urgent need to address the systemic inequities faced by Black Americans and provide meaningful reparations for the historical injustices they have endured.
