Sharing my "budget mullet drive" setup though this is only just 9 speed (2x9 setup). Doest need any goat link at all. Shifters: Shimano Sora R3000 STI FD: Shimano Sora R3000 RD: Shimano Alivio M3100SGS (long cage) Chainring: 32T-44T Prowheel Cassette: 11-42T VG Sport Chain: 10 speed Shimano Gear range is at 525%. Tested it on a long ride a few weeks ago of about 175kms having an elevation gain of 1,1143m while using a 700x38c tyres (Panaracer Gravel King EXL) and it worked well. Got the idea while watching this video specially on how to compute the gear range. Thanks a lot! Ride safe guys! 🙂

I’m glad it was helpful, Tri! Bike gearing can get so complicated that I need to review the information myself from time-to-time.

I have a Trek Checkpoint SL with Shimano GRX 800 series 1x shifters, 38t Wolftooth oval chainring, GRX 812 derailleur with Garbaruk long cage, and Shimano Deore 11-51 cassette. Loving it. Video coming soon on it. I love what you did with yours!

I’ve heard at about Garbaruk and all of it has been good. I subscribed so I can catch your video on your build.

@@GreatEgretAdventure I am converting my diverge comp e5! It's honestly impossible to find info about GRX mullet drivetrains online... I found one article on biekpacking.com that said they got the GRX812 with the Wolf Tooth Goatlink 11 to work with an 11-50T, so that's what I am gonna try, hopefully it works haha. I don't have the money for a SRAM Eagle AXS, nor do I want to take apart my derailleur for the Garbaruk mod lol
@GreatEgretAdventure3 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a really good setup. I’m working on a new, less technical drivetrain video coming up. I’ll probably include that setup. Let me know how it goes for you.

Ratio 12sp kit mullets your SRAM road brifters for a low cost.

@@GreatEgretAdventure I've converted maybe 20 bikes - works perfectly. Fantastic product that allows for ACTUAL gravel gearing (not roadies riding gravel bike gearing like you elude to). Eagle derailleurs are relatively affordable too and 12sp chains are more durable vs. 11/10sp. Also plenty of 12sp 10/11-50/51/52 cassette options for XD/HG or even Microspline options at all budgets.

Hi.. Good explanation.. Is your front chainring 46/30?
@GreatEgretAdventure3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s actually a 44/26. It’s white industries R30 crankset. Their ingenious variable bolt circle design allows for great variation with chainring choice. I cover this in the video on this bike build. Check it out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p6qWhXSsebukgJY

That R30 crank is gorgeous. So expensive, though 😫. Is there anything else on the market that can do that wide of range? I'd love to have a 46 26 or something close to that.
@GreatEgretAdventure3 жыл бұрын
Installing the R30 was probably the best decision for this build, but yeah, super expensive. You’re in luck! The next video I’m doing is on cranksets and drivetrains for gearing like this 46/26. I hope to have it done by next week. Off the top of my head, the only other crankset on the market close to the R30 is Sugino’s Compact Plus+. Its Shimano only, so you’re out of luck if you like SRAM like me. It’s not nearly as expensive as the R30, but to get the gearing you want with it, there is some swapping you’ll need to do to add to the expense. My touring bike has a clever hack using an 11sp sram rival setup. More in the video. It’s going to be a good one! And much less technical than this one.

It can be done with any old square taper 110/bcd crank for a fraction of the cost
@GreatEgretAdventure7 ай бұрын
@michaelviglianco6121 sure it can, but not everyone wants square tapper. The beautiful thing about life is we have a lot of choices out there. :)

With your mullet drivetrain, are there any gear combos (like the big chainring + big sprocket, or the small chainring + small sprocket) that you have to avoid when riding?
@GreatEgretAdventure3 жыл бұрын
While I wouldn’t plan on this in a riding environment, the big chainring/big rear cog was not an issue. The only reason I say I wouldn’t plan on it is because cadence important to me as a rider and that combo is really disruptive to cadence. The only thing I don’t like about this setup is it requires frequent indexing.

Why aren't gravel bikes doing this already. For most people doing casual gravel riding hill climbing can be difficult particularly in mountainous areas. I think this is the future
