I understand your deep attachment to the Hero hooks. Not only is it a habit to use them, but also a muscle memory. Which is a good thing. I almost gave away a crochet hook- an inline one because it sort of snagged the yarn. I didn't though and now I use it often just because it's a popular sized hook and it's easy for me to find because it's so different from the others I have in my little mason jar. Thanks for sharing your views. I value your opinions. Oh and thanks for not having a music background or introduction. Your content is all the entertainment I'm looking for!

Finally! Validation! The day I decided to try and teach myself to crochet I picked up a hook at Walmart and it was a 5.75. Ever since then people say I'm nuts and that boye never did such a thing, there is no size between 5.5 and 6... NO BOD EVEN CONFIRMED IT!

I was only 16 when I taught myself to crochet and that was 51 years ago. I still have my hook that I bought myself, it is a G hook made by Boye. I can crochet with different hooks, no problem using them. I know you love your Herro hooks Crystal. I'm always looking for them at thrift store and other places. Thanks for sharing this video with us. You look very nice wearing your beautiful poncho also. 💜🤗🧶

I thought I was weird bc of how I held my yarn…then I saw your videos and realized you hold it the same way as I do. 😊 I felt better after that and not weird at all. I also use tapered aluminum hooks too. I have some old Boye hooks. I would love to find some Hero hooks.

I have tried the straight aluminum hooks but due to past carpel tunnel injuries and subsequent surgery found that my hand hurts very badly after only about an hour of use. I switched to the Furls streamline Resin hooks and can crochet all day without pain. I say You do what works for You and to heck with anything else. I say whatever allows you to have fun, maintain quality and that makes it possible to keep on crocheting is what you should do and nothing else should matter. I love your work and all that you do so keep up the great job. I do have a Hero somewhere. I think I will track it down to see just what it is that I have.

I still have the set of Boye hooks I got 50 years ago when I taught myself to crochet. They were a gift from my husband and I used them all the time. Unfortunately I can't use them anymore because they hurt my hand. I had a freak accident last year and they had to sew the top of my finger back on at the knuckle. It still doesn't work or feel right after a year so I need an ergonomic one with a soft handle. It's that or stop crocheting and that's never going to happen. 😊 It drove me crazy waiting six months for my hand to heal enough to try.

I was just going through my hooks to see what looked best for my 3rd corner to corner afghan. I buy hooks all the time, too. I have Hero and Gem. Never even noticed the names, just crochet hooks to me. Also, I loved watching your videos showing how different yarns work up, great idea! Plus, I splurged and bought myself a skein of Malibrago (sp?) I found a new yarn shop! I’ll give the new yarn a try after 2 more afghans for my grandchildren.

Crystal, I have been watching the podcast "it is a Sarah" . I don't know if you are familiar with her or not. She is from the Netherlands. She does her podcast in English and she is such a joy to listen to and watch. She knits and crochets. I thought if you hadn't seen her yet that you might be interested.

Thanx Crystal for an interesting video. Coming from Germany I totally understand how you feel 😉. Hero is hard to come by. I was always a knitter until I started in home care and my elderly lady (90 years of age) taught me how to crochet a ripple Afghan. Since then I'm hooked on crocheting. I can't read pattern (I mean, I can read English but can't understand the pattern language) your KZbin tutorials helped me a lot and I could have never crochet so many different patterns without them. You are such a patient person and explain everything so easy. Also, I love that I can see when you do stitches where they are. I checked other tutorials out where some hold the hook different than I do or putting their fingers so that you can't see where you should put your next stitch in. But, that's just me. Thank you again. Love all your KZbin ❤ tutorials.

I have crocheted a few of those ponchos that is my favorite one so far that you have put out to teach us ! as far as hooks I use Boye , my son purchased a set of hooks with handles on them and shhh they are still in the unopened package , hanging on a nail ! a friend gave me a few just like the set my son got me , I tried them & went back to trusty dusty Boye ! I just cant use any thing but Boye in my hand & mind they are what is comforting to me ! for any craft you must be comfortable with the tool(s) you use so as you will continue a journey of fun , excitement & joy ! I have a Gem hook size "H" and it too hangs on the wall for show, but yes it is almost like Boye !

Crystal you are wonderful and you do things that work for you. We are all unique and special in our own way. You inspire me to step out of my comfort zone and try new things. You are a great teacher. One year ago this July you started teaching me to crochet and I am hooked. I like Susan bates inline hooks because they make it easier for me to keep my stitches even. My favorite hook is my Gem J hook. It was my great grandmother's. When I need a J hook, that is the one I grab. I have MS so it's harder for me to hold on to but I like to try. Thankyou for all that you do.

I think the hook you learn on is probably the hook you will use for life. I learned on Boye hooks and cannot use an inline hook for anything. As I have aged and started having problems with my hands, I went berserk and bought a set of Furls hooks. They are inline hooks and I cannot use them for the life of me. While they are comfortable to hold, I just can't get the hang of of them. I will probably sell them off. As far as ergonomic hooks go, I like Clover hooks and I got a set of custom hooks from BQueen, and those are my favorite. I have thumb issues and I have found that I need a fatter hook to relieve the stress on my thumb.

Thanks again for your informative content! I've got Boyes, Susan Bates and some other generic hooks but my absolute favorites are the Omni resin hooks. The Omnis are longer and thicker than the aluminum hooks tend to be. I found that I can crochet for a longer period of time without hand fatigue when I use a longer hook. The shorter (regular size) hooks tend to make my hand cramp up. The Omnis are almost a cross between the inline and rounded hooks. I've been eyeballing some gorgeous wooden hooks but am not willing to spend the money on them yet ..

I know it probably sounds crazy, but I have fallen in love with the plastic hooks from Dollar Tree! 🤷🏻‍♀️😂 I think it’s because they are so lightweight, plus I love the colors and the little knob at the base. The only drawback is that they don’t have the letter sizes on them, just the mm size. But I rarely use my aluminum hooks anymore if I have a plastic one in the same size. 😜

Thanks Crystal! I learned on a bone crochet hook from my grandmother and I had to stop using it because it was beginning to get so thin where the yarn passed that I was afraid it would break. I then moved to a steel G also from grandma and it was the only hook I used for years (grandma changed her tension to control the size of the stitch). After watching you and forcing myself to stretch my crochet, I’ve finally started using the recommended hook size for the yarn. This was a big change for me and difficult since I still had my muscle memory from my G. But I’m having fun trying new things. ❤
