Hey guys ~
this is just some of my experience regarding marriage with a Korean while living in Korea. My husband has pretty much lived in Korea his whole life, whereas I grew up in the States most of my life. My wedding was in Korea, and therefore, a lot of the preparation was Korean style or Korean tradition.
I am just talking about my experience. Hope this helps. I

That’s how the word “dowry” was created. We do this in the states too. If you wanted to marry a woman a dowry was expected from the brides father. Usually a horse, a cow or something of worth. Horses and cows were the big ticket items like rings, cars houses today. That’s why young women eloped. Cus the young men they loved had nothing to offer as dowry’s. Much like kings traded offspring for political agendas. They raised the person straight out the womb. Fed clothed and bathed. They want something in return lol.

...You realize we are talking about weddings here, right? In the majority of countries weddings are stressful and mandatory. I don't think you realize how expensive weddings in the west are.... And if making a list of things you want other people to buy you for your wedding isn't forceful and expensive I don't know what is. It's much easier to give cash like they do in asian countries. Also, most of the time you are giving ~$100 which is really damn cheap for a wedding gift.

Simply SSOL hi... I know you're strunggling a lot with the culture shock. Hang in there, honey. You can do this, I know you can handle your disappointments very well. To make you feel better, i have the same experience with you even though I am not marrying a korean man. I think most of asian culture is like that. Well, more or less. I and my parents technically paid everything for my wedding day. The ceremony, the celebration. Guests in my country don't bring gifts. They bring cash to your wedding celebration. It's from the idea that they could "help" you more with your spending on your wedding. And yes, most of the guests are our parents' guest. We believe that this universe has the rule of take and give. Our parents "invested" a lot on other people's wedding (the guests' or the guests' family member), so they need to be paid back. I know this doesn't make any sense. The "gifted" cash from guests is usually given to the parents as an exchange of their spending on our wedding. Many modern parents nowadays give them all to the bride & groom, but this would not happen with a more moderate family. And yes, your wedding is a big celebration with usually more than 500 invitation (one invitation valid for 2 people). Bride's family usually spend more money than the groom's. But, I am okay with that. Because I can nag about it. Hahaha. I mean, when if in the future my husband doesn't get along well with my family, I can remind him about this issue and why he should respect my family more. At least he has a specific and rational reasons why he has to. The groom usually takes responsibility as the one who should provide house and income for you and your future children. And I swear I nagged a lot on this issue. I kind of asking this and that about our financial and our future plan blah blah. And i plan to do this for the rest of my life 😈. Well you know, i just want to take some revenge. Haha.. Despite of all those issues, you ARE getting married. Hey, you will be living with your man for the rest of your life, so be happy.This too shall pass.

I notice so much similarity between Indian & Korean Culture☺please make part 2 if U hvnt yet😁getting approval from parents(in case of love marriage) is in India also. And buying things for house & giving cash is also common in India & it is actually like dowry but few things are mandatory like buying gifts for in laws & their relatives. & about guests that's also same thing as in India, each & every member of the family can invite their friends/relatives.

Ok so tbh aside from that whole "I wanna marry my favorite idol" thing , I genuinely like Koreans as a whole. This was interesting to know about. I feel like saying "well now ik I'm too broke to marry my idol" can come off kinda rude depending on the ppl, it's Korean culture so I'm trying to not sound like a koreaboo or offensive. I understand it can be frustrating when fans just base interest on ur culture cuz of K-pop or the dramas and though some fans aren't meaning it in a negative way, it can be offensive and annoying. Cuz its not considering the culture as a person who actually wants to learn for curiousity and stuff but instead ur doing it based on a dream . I understand cuz many do that with Hispanic/Latino culture . I'm not saying nothing bad but my fellow kpoppers it's funny in some vids but not every comment should be based on ur idols lol 😂 and if u respond to throw ARMY in the middle, I'm just saying I'm a full Army too so yea. I'm just speaking out of consideration for the Korean culture in case they seem annoyed by us. But if u feel offended by the kpop fan comments ,I'm sorry. Most genuinely mean no negativity or harm. In all honesty I was ignorant on the Korean (both south and north) culture, but K-pop made me interested and I started embracing ur culture and noticed ur culture and mine had some few similarities which interested me more

I would say in most western countries the parents role in a couple's relationship isn't major. Parents generally help the couple if needed and just out of generosity. For weddings, we don't really ask permission or approval. We expect our parents to respect our choices as individuals but of course their opinion still matters but I wouldn't say it plans a big part in the decision making.

DO you just say "Hey i am buy a dress a special dress. . . like a wedding dress today?" or "Hey I am booking a reception hall today. You know the sort of place you go after you get married." I am so grateful my husband family liked me, while i wasnt the "korean ideal" type. Cause i am Latina and chubby. But i think they also had no choice because my husband which was my fiance at the time, we were having a child. And it ended up being a boy. PLUS it was my husbands dad first grandchild. I was so scared honestly...But my husband told he didnt care if they didnt approved because he wanted to be with me. But i think it went semi well..his family was actually really nice. Not sure it was because i didnt know korean or maybe pregnant..

KathehFIT I'm in the same boat, I got pregnant and then got married as well. I haven't even met my husband's parents yet. I feel so scared.. Before we got married I remember my husband's mother telling him not to date a white girl .. and now he's married to one. My husband says it's okay my mother likes you now! But, I feel like it's only because I'm the mother to his child..

i'm not korean but my bf is and he says the same thing about not caring bc he wants to be with me. but the culture shock still gets to me bc they really want a perfect well-made korean daughter in law and has that typical "no girl is good enough for my son" type of mind set and i know they're gonna challenge me to see if i am. and even tho my bf will always be on my side, we just can't escape this normal "korean marriage culture"

I have been married to a Korean Korean woman for 20 years. Like you said, one of the first issue I had with my wife was all the brand new furniture she wanted to buy . So I pretty much have gone through all those issues you pointed out here. After coming back to Korea to re-settle, holidays were usually difficult in the beginning because I have both sides of family and I had to do those typical Korean duties, while appeasing all the household members and relatives.

Here's my experience in having a wedding in Korea this past April. As a Korean born in America, my now wife's family were all in Korea and they wanted to have the wedding in Korea. Since they took care of most of the expenses we didn't object. A year before getting married my wife's parents came to meet me and set the wedding date before I had the chance to save up for a ring so the proposal was more of a formality once I had enough money saved. Fast forward to the wedding day, it was done at a hotel and the actual wedding was done within 1.5 hours including the meal. No best man, no groomsmen or bridesmaids. Just the two of you in front of the Pastor. That was the easiest part. There was another wedding reserved at the hotel a few hours after ours lol.

Yeah, in my family and a lot of our other American friend/families, you ask the woman's father for permission (or father-figure / mom / etc) to marry. It's for respect of the family and shows how much you really value the woman.

Sorry to disagree, but to be honest, I fail to see it as respect for the family...I think, It's more of a sexist, medieval tradition and is a vestige of the patriarchy, and is disrespect towards Legitimate adult autonomy...Which reinforces the patriarchal idea of father's authority over women and offsprings...And why only father ?? Why not both Mother and Father's permission ??
@polaroid_people4676

Amlan B.A. It's often the mother and father nowadays. It is to show respect because a lot of parents actually get mad when their daughters just marry any guy without approval from parents... It's and old tradition and out of all the sexist and racist or just straight up offensive traditions Americans have this is nothing.

Hey ssol, i can relate to you sooo much (filipino here btw), we are like ALMOST except with the house thing and parents gift giving. It differs in some aspects. The guy gets the house OR live with ur in laws. It is compulsory not unless u have enuf savings to get you and ur spouse ur own house before getting married. Also, we dont give gifts to our mother in law but u are expected to treat them well like cook for them,chores and all. It is expected to both sides to treat each in laws kindly. I so agree with family approval! Like it is like a sin to marry the person they dont like haha..the proposal is not much of a big deal to us. I dont know but we dont do what you do hehe... And last the guests, i really envy some western people getting married. I dont hate the guests BUT HEY it is my wedding. Then the parents would decide whome shuld u invite because they need to invite their friends which sometimes u havent met!!thats crazy..i really dont follow traditions. Thats why my boyfriend hates me haha.im such a rebel..lol..but seriously, this norms needs to stop because this does not work to everyone..i love videos like this!! Do more of this!!😄😄

Yes yes do a part 2 please. I agree the whole proposal thing sucks major. Wheres the fun in getting proposed knowing youre getting married!! I think its more the parents that set how your wedding will turn out in Korea...which is kinda sad. Korean weddings have the whole 스드메 which i think it also different to the western cultures. I would love to find out how youre finding being married to a korean korean where female and male roles are rather set and expectations are there, and also the frequent visits etc you are expected to do for the in-laws 🙈

I don't wanna be negative or rude to korean traditions but most of that sounds just so irrational and has no logic for me. I'm from germany and things are so different (and probably the same for most of the europeans). I would be so annoyed to get approval from my girlfriends parents or even those gifts and guests thing. Wtf ^^

Benjamin Such same..

@MultiSARAHGAGA

Feli Hast recht mit allem was du gesagt hast.

Well, I could say to you that it was exactly the same thing in Italy until my grandparents' generation. Man had to go to the girl's parents house and ask to their dad if he could marry her and if the father didn't approve it...they simply couldn't marry.About actually what she said about the house and forniture thing was exactly the same. In some part of south of Italy it is still like that. I think It really depends on how much a country is conservative. So, it was not that much surprising for me.

That's a nice glimpse of another culture's marriage traditions. Here in the Philippines, traditionally, it's the guy and his family who shoulder almost everything. To get engaged, the guy and his family will come over the girl's house bearing food and gifts to ask for the girls hand in marriage. It's called pamamanhikan. A guy has to prove to the girl's parents that he can support a family.

Like; - Permission: we mostly have to get the approval of our parents (especially the mothers) - House: the man has to prepare the house (he can rent it if he can't buy one ). Then, there are some rules for each room (like the bride side has to buy the bedroom furniture) and everything has to be new (which I agree is such a waste). - Guests: as the bride family organizes the engagement and the groom family organizes the wedding, you would find a huge complement of family members/friends you would probably never see again at both receptions. There are some differences though. Our society is more matriarchal, so women have more say in family life. Also, giving cash directly to family members (including your new family) is considered rude, we deal in gold instead. Proposal has to be surprising (definitely not two days before). The gifts are given by the parents to the bride/groom - never the other way around. It is usually gold for the bride and an expensive watch for the groom. For the wedding gifts, it is usually gold (in 70/140/280$ denominations, according to your closeness to the bride/groom). Anyhow, thanks a lot and good luck in Korea :)
