Paint your house super fast! This is for home owners who won't be using an airless, but using a brush. There are so many homeowners that have houses clad in some type of 'weather board'. Be it, hardy plank, western red cedar, compressed cladding of sorts, and at some stage it all needs painting.

Just some of the gear I use:
Although I've used about every brand of brush on the planet, Purdy brushes would be my favourite brushes. They hold plenty of paint and are excellent for cutting in. These are top end brushes.
Some of the brushes I recommend;

Always use lambs wool roller sleeves. Holds paint and very little splatter:

dellfozzio pintura I am the best brush man in the Midwest and I do not paint like this at all. you can tell a real painter if he shows up and some painters whites with paint on them. I've painted with multiple companies commercial industrial mansions New res Renovations, I've done it all. Do not follow tips on any of these people, just hire a real painter!!

My uncle lived at the shore where house needed repainting every 5 years or so. Use to prepare and paint one side of house each year -- one weekend to prepare (scape, repair or replace wood etc...) and second weekend for painting. House always looked great and task per year manageable. Use a roller paint stick/power roller to cut time in half from video suggestions

@@bettye444 It took a fair amount of time to scrape the old paint off the wood trim. Painting went faster for myself. I did this all before the first snow. I work on the sun side wall if temp gets to say 60. Maybe done till spring.

Thanks a million for your tips. This is awesome. Your tips turned a week long chore into a two day task. Laying it on with a roller and then working it in with a brush is a revelation. I did 8 inch lap siding 3 boards at a time and came to dread the the parts where I had to dip to cut in! By the time that I finished I found my self rolling on the paint on extra heavy around the obstacles and then "catching it" with a brush before it could drip. I also found that I could lay on heavy enough that I only had to do one coat on the entire house. Again AMAZING tips, you changed my life !

Although, being your project is exterior, I would probably go the extra mile and apply the second coat. Always better to do 2 coats on exteriors (even in 1 coat covers) And get this, the second coat goes on even faster. All the best mate

Good video tips for diy. I used to work with my dad some, a painter for 50+ years commercial and housing. He said never paint out of the paint can. Pour what you need into a paint pot and dip out of that. He dips the brush, taps the side, spins it with his fingers and taps the other side of the brush on the same side of the pot almost faster than you can see it happen. When you need to put it down to get rolling the brush stands up in the pot on the clean side and is not left out in the air. Never roll out of a paint tray. They are too prone to being kicked over or stepped in. Use a 5gal bucket and a screen.

Flawless technique here. I'm a pretty lousy painter myself, with about two years experience but I've popped onto this video more than once to steal little tips and tricks. Really good painters all seem to handle the brush differently than your average painter. It looks as though the brush is the softest, most plush thing around and like it's practically painting itself. You're making it look easier than it is, for sure.

I agree with your observation on how the brush looks. I've finally gotten very proficient with one myself, and the key is what this guy keeps repeating, which is to keep plenty of paint on your brush. If it's getting streaky and requiring you to brush it back and forth or use a lot of pressure, the brush is too dry. Most people put too thin a coat on, as well.

I prefer full brush work! Become one with the brush and paint. I'm currently on 'God Mode: Level 2 - Master With Dual Brushes' I have a buddy stand on the roof dropping tubs of paint down.. while I go full Bruce Lee on the weatherboards utilizing my master brush skills!

I spray painted my cape-style wooden-shake house approx 15 years ago. Watched some videos and bought an inexpensive sprayer with a small tank. Yes, I spent a bunch of time refilling the tank. I did a great job controlling overspray with a sheet of cardboard blocking as I was spraying. I was a brazen 40-something woman. It was a learning experience. Fast forward to my late 50’s, I’m in the process of prepping to repaint before winter sets in. This time I’m going to roll/brush. I’m not sure if it’ll take more or less time. I suspect that it’ll take less paint. It doesn’t have to be perfect. Im hoping the small edge from each row is covered with paint from the edge of the roller and doesn’t require picky touch up. I am a competent DIYer of lots of big projects. Thanks for the little roller-loading tip!

At the end of the day, as long as it gets done. :) We sprayed probably 98 percent of the houses we painted for clients, but made this for those not wanting to use a sprayer. It really speeds up the process, but not near as quick as spraying. Happy painting :)

I’ve read conflicting text about the staying power of sprayed vs brushed on paint. It appeared from my house that the peaks that were rolled on held up better than more of the rest of the house that I sprayed. Surely the prep plays a part as well as the direction (N/S/E/W) it’s facing. I guess an airless painter also differs from the less expensive sprayers. Dunno? Just wish I had timed myself and tracked the number of paint gallons used the last time I painted the house. Thanks again for the video and the reply.

Idk my father taught me to paint 20 +years ago and it was like deja vu watching this.... The only thing you left out was always brush back from dry to wet ESPECIALLY with paints or stains that have a gloss.... I'm newer school.... Was taught on a brush but I'm pretty crafty with a sprayer lol we "all like to save money" as you put it lol... In glad you show homeowners "weekend warriors" what's entailed in painting. Not bad. I have been painting since... 1987 omg.....I would have done a couple of minor things different but regardless, this video is professional and to the point. Many on youtube aren't. The key here is less dipping. The point is, use lot's of paint, It's that simple. We don't get paid for dipping, we get paid for applying.

I watched your video again and I am currently at 3/4 of the house is finished. When I painted with my mother she insisted on the paint brush because she did not want stipple left on the flat siding. Well I have to be honest, that stipple on the siding cannot be seen unless you get really close, like with readers, and I don't mind it at all! I still have to use a brush to go into the grooves but I have to say the roller is my new best friend when painting! My neighbor is a professional painter and he told me that they use a roller pretty much all the time anymore. Depending on how much you load the roller, it also seems like I am applying a thicker coat to the siding, where the brush is much less! I want a thicker coat since it is on the exterior and I always do two coats of paint, so I am happy! Thank you for your video!

I have seen new homes and they were sprayed. Looked really bad. Builder refused to repaint. The start and stop marks really stood out. That was my biggest fear before i began to paint my home. I figured these guys are professionals. All they do is paint houses and this is what they are producing. So that stopped me from spraying even though i had already bought a sprayer. Watched countless videos, but you had the most real life value and content. I have finally finished painting my home and it turned out being a professional job. So I returned to say, thank you. You were God sent and at the right time. I will say to anyone looking to paint your home, you can do it. HOWEVER, he makes it look easy and it's not. Its' A LOT of hard work. I mean....a lot. Tip: maybe you should set up a donation page or something. I'm sure people would donate because of the money they saved.

Firstly: That is brilliant. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Secondly: I reckon I can speed you up. Don't cut in first. Lay that paint on and then cut in using it. What do you reckon? Also, wet edge: You could roll that roller vertically. You'd get a ton of paint on and more in the groove, can lay off really fast back to where you came from. I'm doing windows this year and cladding next: this makes a huge difference.

10 points for thinking Bridget, but sorry, no go. The reason I cut in first is so I can start to lay off as soon as I'm finished with the roller. If the paint starts to set (and it will on a warm sunny day) before you can start laying off (because now you are cutting in) your in for a whole set of trouble. If you have plenty of drying time, it would work. My day was very warm and windy. All the best

You said it right 90 percent of non professional painters cannot figure out how to keep a wet edge. I've even seen many professional painters who have a hard time keeping a wet edge. To make it look good you must not brush into semi dry paint.

Simple extended pole cuts down on your ladder work, roll a heavy coat of paint , then back brush and cut in at the same time , can do a lot from the ground with 1 roller pole 1 brush holder pole.

If you learned from this video then you probably have never painted, everyone paints this way, I thought he was going to show something with a spray gun or combination with roller etc

I usually paint this way but my wife decided to hire someone because I was going to take too long, he used a spray gun, he scraped and sanded and replaced boards upgraded windows, but I am not happy with the outcome, I still see the old paint lines or nail holes, he put two layers only and said that is good enough does not need more layers but I am used to putting lots of paint. I don't know what to do.

I independently developed this technique while painting my home. Great video and information to share - wish it was around fifteen years ago when I started LOL! You pointed out doing small sections because of windy conditions and never in direct sun, maintaining a wet edge - all important points. The reason beginners should understand is the speed of drying is increased in these situations and your paint will drag on the brush and lap marks will leave a blocky pattern. I use to own a painting machine that fed paint to a roller and I used it inside my house and I believe it worked well, the things I didn't like was the clean up and the amount of paint wasted when cleaning out the machine. I was just wondering however, if that machine might help you and speed up the painting even more by not having to even dip the roller. Now I am wondering how fast a job could get done and done well by two people, one rolling and the other tipping (I think that is the term you used) with the brush. Just something else to ponder! My mother and I last painted her house 18 years ago after my father died. We painted every inch with a 1 1/2 inch brush and put on two 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint and it took 3 months. This year, I do it alone but I am using a roller and brush, I began today! Pray for me cause I need it!

Subscribing! I will be painting my own house SOON! I simply cannot afford to have a pro do it...After watching these videos I feel pretty confident. I have already painted my interior and it looks great, but the outside poses different challenges. Some say here that spraying is a better method, but in the hands of a DIY'er like me, most simply don't possess those skills! The thought of all that masking makes me cringe...Besides, I plan to take my time and enjoy the process. I love my house and will take great pride in painting it! Thanks for the great instruction.

Hi Michelle, as a diy, you to have that luxury of taking your time. And when it comes to spraying, you're spot on, diy's don't have the skills for spraying and do more harm than good.. Paint literally gets everywhere. I've seen a lot of damage done, and by so called professional painters. It's not for everyone. Good luck with your paint project and happy painting. :)

I have 4 inch clap board. Not sure I can use a big roller because of the angle. But even a small roller would speed thing up. Thanks for the tip.

Would work well too if you rolled ,say,5 boards (vertically) or up and down as opposed to sideways.By doing so you would also fill the gaps between boards with paint making it that much easier to brush it all out.

Number one, I could see it being harder for the diy, also, by filling in the 'gaps' you would have to be constantly checking back to brush out runs. Even being careful to NOT fill in the gaps, you still get the occasional run.

I rehab mobile homes. I like to paint on days where the air is not real dry. that way the paint doesn't dry too fast. My mom nails a few holes along the top of the can where the lid seats so paint can drip through and not well up and stick in there. My lumbar 5 is effed up but painting actually seems to be a good back exercise.

I use to work for a panting company. You're 100% right about you want to tap the brush on both sides and not wipe it on the edges. 90% of people who don't know how to paint do that and then look at me like i'm nuts when I tap my brush on 2 sides fast.

What does the tapping of yr brush on side of pail actually do? Is it so paint doesn’t drip and brush is better loaded than wiping it half off on the side of the paint can?

In my neck of the woods, white base paints dry so fast that you wouldn't be able to lay off the roller mess with the brush. The best pros here strictly use a brush only on lap siding, or if they're desperate to save time, maybe roll, without back brushing. Brushing is not as slow as you make it sound, especially given that you're jumping up and down ladders, roofs etc, much easier to do with just a pot and a brush.

Not sure how you get white base paint dries faster than other coloured paints. Paint is paint, but each to their own I quess.

The more tint there is in paint, the slower it dries. I know this from experience. Here's a quote from Dulux Australia: "The speed of dry can be noticeably slowed (especially in humid conditions) by high colourant levels because the non-drying glycols / surfactants that are present act as slow evaporating solvents that keep the applied paint film wetter for a longer time period. This delayed drying time can sometimes be twice as long as expected."

One idea that came to mind is how much faster again this might be if I used one of those pre-loaded rollers where the handle can be filled with paint? May even be able to wrap with cling film between sessions to minimise cleaning. Thanks again for sharing.

I love his technic for rolling with enough paint to do the siding lower edges with the back brush. I will incorporate that in my huge project as soon as it is warm enough. I have used the paint stick with the paint in the handle. It's basically a huge syringe. I have only used it for interior so far. He calls it a diy gimmick like that is a bad thing. I am a very good diy guy. This is a device that has made interior painting fun for me. I hate loading the roller though I have used deep pro quality pans. The bucket with roller grid looks better. Back to the project. I intend to use a power roller (with a pump line from the bucket), a roller as mentioned here, or a sprayer to get the paint on the wall quickly and evenly. Then back brush as he shows to work the paint into all corners and crevices. 2 points that are the only real problem I have found with these type for interior is the expensive flow thru roller covers and that they are really hard to clean. If you can afford to use them for one long day then replace rather than clean them you will be happier. The trick of loading the roller than wrapping it in plastic wrap when you take more than a very quick bio-break it a great way to go. If you do the big syringe type spend the money for the ratcheting squeeze handle. You have much better control than the push plunger type. Any input for choice of powered roller verses ratcheting syringe type verses a sprayer for paint loading the wall would be appreciated.

i have standard hardi-plank running horizontal. the fastest method for me was to use a quality 3/4" nap and load it well with paint. i rolled up and down. 1/2" or 3/8" were no good. with 3/4" i could easily push a bunch of paint into the overhang gaps. sure there was some excess paint released each time i rolled over an overhang, but the roller would eventually pick up the excess once it released enough paint. i only had to brush around windows and door trim. i used sherwin williams best and only one coat. it has been 3 years and the paint has not faded nor has it bubbled or chipped off anywhere. we have 100F summers and 0F winters. I even painted the visible cement foundation with the same stuff and it has remained perfect, as well! the old paint was chalky to the touch, so in prep i used a stiff broom w/ 18ft extension, chlorine and dish soap from a small backpack sprayer, and scrubbed the siding good before powerwashing afterward. i was going to hire out the job, but the half dozen contractors who came on site were lazy asses, so i did it myself. i rarely contract anything anymore, because everyone else sucks.

In 1961 a farmer in Ohio painted his whole house in 10 minutes. (after he and his wife taped paper over all the windows.) He rented one of those setups the state used to paint tall water towers. 15 Ft vertical set of nozzles with a gas powered compressor. Pulled it around the house with his tractor. Then he did his barn!!! I posted this for everyone to have a laugh. IT DID HAPPEN THATS NO JOKE!!!!

I like the video...I have a lot of weatherboard cladding to paint and it didnt occur to me to use a roller as well as a brush. After seeing it done I can better appreciate it covers well overall and speeds up the application to the long flat areas. Thank you.

Use a quality 4in brush for painting exterior siding, and setting up 2 ladders and running a plank gives you a lot more room to move

Hi! Great video. I used the same technic, but with a paint stick roller, even less dipping! So fast! I use a brush on the underside of the lap before applying paint to the surface with the paint stick roller. Then I smooth the paint from the paint stick using a large 3M paint pad, it has a brush-like texture, and I can do a decent edge too; faster than a brush on the surface. I painted the short side of a rambler in less than 2 hrs, including all edging around window trim and whatnots. Don't you just love finding quicker ways to do things?! Great minds... Now, I need to find faster ways to prep, that's the bigger job in my mind. ;) I need to remove years of paint from cedar siding, considering alternatives, and assuming some layers are lead based, because it's a 50's rambler. I've done interior trim with chemical strippers, but maybe you have better suggestions for me?

I brushed and rolled the only front of our rental house and it took 12 hours. I got a Graco sprayer and painted my entire house in the same time.

Hey Rick I paint for myself in Kansas and do it exactly like you do. Sometimes I will use a paint sprayer if there is a large section of the house without to many windows, doors, cars or neighbors houses due to overspray issues and lawsuits!...........Also in Kansas its usually windy most days. I always roll and back brush horizontal siding as you do. To many so called painters love a sprayer and I am one that doesn't. They have their place and time but overspray issues are to costly. And I"ve seen to many bad paint jobs with sprayers when the operator does not know how to use them correctly. On vertical siding I usually just roll up and down to the soffit line to bottom of siding and do not need to back brush. Keep in mind this is for the rougher wood grain finish type siding. If its real smooth than I use a sprayer or if rolling I back brush it due to stippling of a real smooth surface from the roller. Any way great video!!!

Hey Shama, you obviously have experience just by the way you describe things. As for airless, you are spot on, way too many cowboys in that arena that have no idea. Long story short, I don't show any spraying on my channel as it's mainly for Diyers or outright beginners. We sprayed everyday, int/ext for decades when I lived in the states. 2 or 3 years ago I got on KZbin and thought to look at what was being presented in the paint game. I was shocked! So much rubbish by so many with little experience or just had no idea and passing it off as they know what they are doing. So I decided to get some real information out to those that where looking for it. I know, I need some more work in the filming and audio department! LOL

This is an old thread, but on the off chance that you check it, I’m a first time home painter of a 20x48 ft home. It’s cement board siding that runs vertical, so I was goin to roll and then back brush it. Tips? warnings? I’m kind of working bassackwards here because I’ve already painted the shutters, doors and decking. I only know what I’ve learned on utube...

All good mate. Sounds like you're on the right track. Only thing I would recommend, make your first coat of paint for the raw cement siding on the thin side. Better absorption.

I do paint this way however i have found it a lot harder when up a ladder. As you can only do 1 or 2 boards at a time. You create more work for yourself as you are constantly moving the ladder back and forth. Where as you can keep the ladder in one position if you are painting downwards....

I don't often paint outside because my house is brick, but I instinctively work this way on everything, eg. 6 panel doors, getting as much as possible on with a roller and filling in the crevices and touching up the texture with a brush. Some people think it's "lazy" not to do everything with a brush; fine. I'm also too lazy to shovel my driveway with a fork.

I have those grooved cedar shakes popular in the 1950's and applying with a roller then brushing it out is the only way to go... Definitely 10 times as fast... Two people is best... One with roller one with brush following.

@@RickBushell1958 ... That's a fact... I live in an area where all the houses (about 60) were all sided with it... Now I am the only fool left who still has them. But I was always a non conformist... I like the look. They'll be painted one last time( I've done it twice)... Getting too old to deal with the aggravation. Can't scrape the old paint... I do a careful pressure wash... But it still chews up the cedar.

Funny... I just assumed he was going to show a faster way of spray painting. I had forgotten how much time I spent painting before I got one of those. When I used to paint with brush and roller I'd roll vertically next to the windows and leave a pile of paint up close to them to cut in with. Going vertical with the roller would probably work a lot better with that kind of siding because it would get a lot more paint in the cracks. One day I took a side job painting away from my old boss who I worked for as a handyman and to spite me she bought a brand new airless sprayer to let me use when I came back. I couldn't believe how fast it was. We covered the windows with plastic back then but these days I buy disposable paint shields and a masker and have my own jobs. One thing I learned over the years was never loan your sprayer out to anyone no matter how good of friends they are because they will never clean it right and you will have to buy a new sprayer. I've always properly cleaned my sprayer immediately after I finished painting no matter how tired I was and they seem to last forever. It doesn't matter if you clean the outside of the sprayer, just make sure you take the gun apart and get all the filters everywhere spotless and run plenty of water through the hose and all the lines. Cheap airless sprayers seem to work just fine and take a lot less space in the truck. I would get a good one if all I did was paint. I did notice it was a lot nicer painting with a more expensive gun with a swivel on it but as long as you pay attention not to twist the hose, the cheap gun it comes with will work just fine. Unless I'm in an open area I use the lowest pressure I can that will give me a good spray pattern and always have a bucket or hose and a rag to immediately clean up any mistakes or over spray. A paper and tape masker was my old best friend; but keeping the pressure low, and using plenty of cardboard paint shields; and replacing them well before they start dripping takes the cake! I've also learned how to put the masking tape on so it can easily be removed. I don't press too hard and make pull tabs for light switches by making the tape too long and folding the excess up in the middle. Pay attention to how the tape is going to come off as you are masking and take it off as soon as you can. There's nothing worse than removing tape that has been stuck on too hard or dried out from the sun.

I'm an Electrician, but I "roll it on" and then i put a long brush stroke over the top. I roll 20 FT on a hot day. Believe me, it's better and faster than any brush....

The painters on KZbin with the sprayers and other equipment lead people to believe that they can't paint their houses themselves. You can figure out a way to paint your own house. Start in the back so you can learn from your mistakes, and go from there.
