If you want your bass lines and bass solos to be more melodic, then this video is perfect for you. You see, there's a certain interval that's in a ton of melodies and bass lines.
Once you know it, you'll start seeing it everywhere, but more importantly, you'll be able to start using it for yourself.
Now can you still make your playing more melodic without using this interval? Of course you can! This trick will just make it that much easier to inject that melodicism right into your playing.
Of course if you want to study the bass lines and melodies in this lesson, there's no better way than to play them for yourself. So if you want the tabs and notation for all the bass lines and melodies from this lesson, just sign up on this page:
becomeabassist.com/inject-mel...
I'll send you a PDF with everything we played in this lesson, plus a few solo licks you can use right now, plus a little trick so when you use this interval, you know where it's going to sound the best!
I'll see you in there.
Good luck with the lesson and happy playing!
Cheers,
Luke

Thanks Luke, subscribing to your channel. Recently saw Amy Grant in concert and became fascinated with her bass player, Mike Brignardello's, technique. His lines had a lot of movement in them and so well placed, never stepping on the singer or other parts. As I tried to listen to him through the mix, it occurred to me that almost all of his movements were melodic. So, I went looking for videos on KZbin where I could learn to play more melodically and found this video. Really like your presentation--very straight forward and uncomplicated. I often use a R-6-5-3-R figure, but it never occurred to me to inject the 6th in a blues progression. Duh! Nor have I ever considered the minor 6th! Thanks again for all the great pointers!

Haha! If there's one thing I've learned making stuff on the internet, it's that no matter how 'good' you make something, there's always going to be someone (usually lots of people) who hate it. You could grow the juiciest, crunchiest, tastiest apple in history, but some people will still hate apples. Besides, even the negative comments and thumbs down still counts as 'engagement' in KZbin's eyes which means the algorithm pushes the videos in front of even more people. Either way, it's a win for my channel. Thanks for having my back though - I really appreciate it.

Who really cares about the "thumbs down" folks? Their loss. One of the biggest stumbling blocks for a musician is to care about what other people think. If a lesson or a bass line sounds good to you, it IS good. Real players are too busy creating to let bullshit get in the way.

I have a fair understanding of music theory, but my musical grammar is very rough. I'm curious if you could or in previous videos explain why Come Together is using a flat 6th interval rather than an augmented 5th interval. I've heard the many times in my life, but never attended to learn it. Maybe I should. Thanks for all of your lessons, I've only recently discovered your channel , bingewatching now. I wish the information you present was so readily available 30 years ago when I started playing bass.
@BecomeABassist
@BecomeABassist Жыл бұрын
Hey @Remly - good question! You're talking about the flat 6th between the A and the F in the Come Together bass line, right? You're 100% correct that the interval of a flat 6 is the same as an augmented 5th. The reason you'd call the distance between those notes a minor 6th though is kind of nerdy, but I'm kind of a nerd. lol If you use the notes of the key of Come Together (D minor - D-E-F-G-A-Bb-C-D) and start at the A and count up: A(1) - Bb(2) - C(3) - D(4) - E(5) - F(6) You find that the F is 6 steps away from the A. There is already a 5th above that A - the E - but the F is part of the key of D minor, so we're not 'modifying' the 5th in any way; we're just playing that note that already exists within the key. The augmented 5th isn't used that often, but the example I always give is the first chord of The Beatle's 'Oh Darling'. The song is in the key of A major, but the first chord is and E7#5. In that case, the notes of the key are - A-B-C#-D-E-F#-G#-A but the notes in that first chord are: E - G# - C(although technically, it'd be B#) and D That one is an augmented 5th because ordinarily, the B would be the 5th: E(1) - F#(2) - G#(3) - A(4) - B(5) But instead, the B is replaced by a note a half-step above - C. Like I mentioned, if you were doing this 'academically', you'd probably call that note a B#, but when I'm playing I would just think of it as a C. So while both examples use the same distance (aug 5th/flat 6), the context means they're labelled with different things. I hope this makes sense, but let me know if there's anything that you need clarified.

Dr. Crypto - She didn't just do it so much better, she did it with _soul and feeling_ unlike the so-called "King" who just posed his way through it. Big Mama Thornton was and is extremely under-rated. She also had an immense influence on Janis Joplin and played with Mississippi Fred McDowell.

@@carltaylor4942 Relevant to the USA and the world. "Big Mama Thornton"'s version a small number of people ever heard or cared for. Elvis' version kickstarted rock into the mainstream... That doesn't make it necessarily better, but it's the very definition of being more relevant...

Perhaps this is the wrong place to ask this question but can anyone or you Luke please explain how you record your bass for these tutorials. I use my phone to record myself playing along with new songs, but I can never hear my bass in the recording unless I put ear buds in. I guess my question really is "why can I here your bass so clearly through the crap speaker in my phone?"
@BecomeABassist
@BecomeABassist 6 жыл бұрын
Good question - For these videos, I actually record my bass directly through my audio interface. I don't use an amp or any microphones for the lessons. Obviously that's different when I'm playing gigs or in the studio (although pretty much every decent producer will take a direct line for the bass as well as the amp sound). Using a phone to record all the low-frequency stuff is fine, but I'm guessing the microphones in phones were optimized for the voice which sits in a much higher register than the bass. Then, when that audio is reproduced on the same phone whose speakers are probably optimized for voice, you'll lose a lot of that low end. Also, it's possible that the bass sound you're using is too bottom heavy. If there aren't any mids or highs to capture, you probably won't be able to hear it at all unless you're using headphone - like you say. Does this all make sense?

@BecomeABassist
@BecomeABassist 6 жыл бұрын
You're talking about the Come Together bass line at the 7:07 mark, right? The distance between A and F# is a major 6th, but the distance between A and F is a MINOR 6th. It's still a 6th, just the minor version. I talk about this at the 6:55 mark before I demonstrate the line.

Yes. If you ask a random person on the street, what Nirvana are known for 99% of them won't say beautifully written melodies. They'll say something like grungy guitars and all that stuff. Kurt Cobain wrote some pretty incredible melodies, but that's not what most people think of when they think of Nirvana.
