I worked at the San Francisco Maritime Museum when I was a university student in the 1980's. My first assignment was with the living history program on The C.A.Thayer. the program involved 11 and 12 year old kids who would stay over night on the Thayer and perform various sailor activities. ( the program later moved to the Balclutha) When I performed the roll of ships cook I slept in the cooks cabin next to the galley. It was a fun job and I really liked sleeping on the boat and waking to the sound of foghorns and seal lions. My great grandfather on my father's side, Johan Johanson was a Swede from Finland who built ships. He left Finland to avoid serving in the Russian army and emigrated to Australia where he married an Irish girl. They then moved to Arcata in Northern California where Johan built lumber schooners similar to the Thayer before eventually moving to San Francisco in the 1890's. I still have some of his chisels and planes he used when he was a carpenter. I'm really enjoying your channel. In addition to my great grandfather I have Swedish blood from my mother who was born in Dasland and then lived in Goteborg .My three Swedish uncles are now gone but I have many cousins. I visited Sweden many time in the 70's 80's and 90's but have not been back for many years . I loved sailing the archipelago of Sweden's west coast. The small fishing villages, the red houses, the pink granite and birch trees are all so lovely.

Thanks for another great video folks. We were amazed to see the paddle steamer the 1914 Eppleton Hall. It has a colourful history and there is a book all about it. It was one of the last operating paddle steamer tugs ever and was rescued from a mud bank in the River Tyne where it was built. There is quite a story of skulduggery about the attempt to get its sistership to America, unfortunately that failed and it was eventually basically destroyed by the British Maritime Museum. Lovely to see that old girl still afloat after 105 years!

Great video. Your crossing to Sausalito reminded me of all the wonderful times I windsurfed those waters 35 years ago. An ebb tide and 20+ knot winds made for great waves and wonderful sailing! If you are looking for books, check out Two Year’s Before the Mast by Charles Henry Dana. It is the true story of a young man who sails from New England to California in the 1830’s when Alta California was still part of Mexico. They trade at the missions up and down the coast before sailing back to New England. The rounding of Cape Horn was unbelievable in ships that couldn’t go to windward. The book became very popular when US settlers began to go to California because it was the best English language guide to the region.

We always enjoy your videos, but especially seeing you in our sailing grounds. We sail out of Sausalito and around Angel Island, Alcatraz, and Treasure Island. The high-wind area in the center of the bay is known as "The Slot" to all the local sailors. It's always a high adventure out there! Glad you found the anchorage in Richardson Bay, but sorry about the condition of the channel during negative tides. You have to stay in the exact middle or you will plow the fields. ;-) Thanks for visiting the San Francisco Bay Area!

Flying Cloud was a clipper ship that set the world's sailing record for the fastest passage between New York and San Francisco, 89 days 8 hours. The ship held this record for over 130 years, from 1854 to 1989. - From Wikipedia

For some reason this one made me think of how much effort and energy it takes to do what you two do. Maybe it was the change in Windy SF to warmer weather just across a bay, maybe it was Johan finding the instrument for so cheap. I don't know but I do know I cherish each moment you two share with us. Miss you both. Aloha

In your previous episodes, I saw a "tall ship" in the background, and hoped you'd 'give us a squizz'. Thanks for that. I wonder when the old sailors finally realised the earth was not flat; would be good to have an old grizzly Captain get on camera to explain the thinking process there. The Ocean Highways map sure illustrates the tremendous trade between Australia and the U.S. in those days for agricultural products, minerals, tools and workers wanting to join the various gold-rushes in both countries.

5:20 - "It's Cold. It's windy" Welcome to summer in San Francisco. That "channel" is called The Slot, and catches the west wind coming in through the Golden Gate real nicely. During summer, we often get 20-30kt winds through there. Add the strong currents caused by the Golden Gate, and it makes for fun sailing! ;-)

Your videos were great and showed the SF Bay the way I remember. I was a racing and cruising sailor on a boat named Leda, a Lapworth 36 #71 for many years. Loran’s were still very expensive in the 70’s so we used charts off shore with a radio direction finder. Monterey and Carmel are as picturesque as advertised and should be nice sailing this time of year. My only caution on our coast is Point Conception and south were the wind is unpredictable. Most of Chanel Islands have many anchorages. The weather gets warmer moving south, Enjoy!

Wow what an extraordinary old boat. I once went on a true replica of the Endeavour, the boat Captain Cook sailed around the pacific back in 1770. What caught my attention was the “chunky” engineering. The pre industrial era steel work was all done in a blacksmiths shop and was huge, over engineered and primitive compared to the “modern” boat you were on. They now both look old but really it would be like comparing a Model T to a Mustang. Happy travels.

Some tall ships (square riggers) did round Cape Horn, but if the movie Captain Bligh is adhering to the true story (around 1787), Bligh attempts to make a quick trip by sailing southwest (to the surprise of Fletcher Christian), but after a few weeks of battling waves and wind and cold, they turn back and go the usual route to Tahiti. So as Johan says they did go, or tryt but it was tough.
