I have a customer, buys 10 bundles every 10 days. Tried talking her into a third of a cord delivered Nope bundles please, .I'll pick them up Ok... you got it. Side note* I use twine make a .75 cu ft bundle, tie it off tight at each end use lose ends to make a handle and pound kindling in the middle to get super tight bundles.

I sell firewood from time to time and always have it on hand and there’s been times when I needed firewood in a pinch on a camping trip cus I didn’t have space to haul it as far as I was going and I was so grateful to find a couple bundles to buy when I got to where I was going. There’s always a purpose if people buy it and the people that badmouth any kind of firewood are the same people that have an empty box for a brain.

My bundle sales were up over the Thanksgiving weekend from my self serve stand. Usually I sell more loose stacks, but I did a promotion reminding people how nice it is to have a fire, fireplace or fire pit, when people get together over the holidays and I think that must have helped. I live in an area with an abundance of firewood and firewood sellers. When I first saw the bundles of firewood show up at local stores. I thought no one will ever pay that much for wood. But week after week I noticed the stacks needed replenishing. Boy was I wrong. Makes me think about when I first saw bottled water. I thought who the bleep is going to pay for water. We have all the free spring water a person could want. Now bottled water sells better than most soda drinks.

That's where the onion bags have a place... you can make and store your seasons worth of bundles outside on skids ... you can also make green bundles that will dry by the time you sell them .... if you can score a camp ground that orders 1000s at a time you can load your dump trailer to its max and simply dump and dash... but yes your right it's hard to get grocery stores on board and that's where the money is... the one I deliver to takes 80 bags at a time every 2 weeks during camping season. Wish I had more of them

Nothing beats a good hot campfire, other folks would come over just to visit and enjoy the warmth. Each and every National Park, Monument, Forest, Sea Shore, State Parks and private campgrounds all had rules about burning wood from out of the area. ..or not certified.... Thanks to the bundle woodguys we had fires wherever we could.

Love bundles! It's the best way that I've found to make the most profit from a cord of wood. I use mesh bags though as speed and presentation is key for me! I need to be able to make as many as possible in an hour and northing beats mesh bags + the ez bagger. If you're just casually making some bundles, the twister is excellent, I used to use one as well. We did over 3,000 bags of pine this summer here in Southern Maine and hoping to do more next summer. Now that the pandemic is over people are camping like crazy. Have a good one. And I agree 100% about listening to the customer. I started off wrapping my bundles with a twister and decided to switch to mesh bags as a test, I had about 100 bags not being used. The feedback I got was overwhelming, the mesh bags were much more preferred. That's when I made the decision to fully switch and get the EZ bagger and things have been 100x better since. I am hoping to order some custom mesh bags next summer with my logo on them. I currently pay about 40 cents a bag and it's worth every penny

There is a lot of work when creating and delivering 150 full cords per year. If you have a market for bundles, you would only need to handle 1/2 (or less) of the firewood you handle today? The body is only getting older, and the expensive wood processor machinery will also wear out. What will you feel like at 60 or 70 years of age? Does delivering 150 full cords per year sound like a good prospect? You could eliminate your $90k processor set up, and stick with all your other equipment? Less is more? When I look at Scheib and Back40, they are not heavily vested in expensive equipment. If the "grim reaper" is looking your way, what is wrong with simplifying?
@johanneslaxell6641
@johanneslaxell6641 Жыл бұрын
I guess that there is nothing "wrong" in stepping down, but in my opinion "Perfect Split makes perfect bundles". I'm sure that chainsaw and splitter can do it, but my bet is on the processor any day as long as there is a supply of logs. I guess that all is possible, but cutting and splitting is not my first choise...

@@johanneslaxell6641 The 405 JAPA processor is a cadillac for most everything. But, its like using a sledgehammer to kill a fly for a small amount of firewood? If Joe could get $1k for 128 bundles (1 full cord), why produce almost twice the firewood with all the processing, piling and hauling to earn the same money? If a person could afford to keep the 405 just for bundle wood, that would be nice. But, you need a bigger woodyard to house and use it.

@@garylaszewski7380 As I don't know the numbers I can't take a stand to the question regarding sledgehammering. But in general it comes to what the customer pats for nice, uniforn "valueadded" firewood. Some people pay silly money for tables made out of slabs and epoxy or for handmade other stuff. Some people buy a cheap Mercedes just to move from A to B, some people buy a tricked out Mercedes-Maybach to get driven from A to B. Both are cars but still wery different, as there is firewood and there is firewood. Then there is the aspect of time being money...

Bundles are the way to go for sure. I make mine quarterly so I make 400-500 at a time and I just pay a young helper to do them for me so I don’t have to touch it. I bought the same bundler after watching your previous video. Mine is the high speed quick load though. I can clear 40-50 bundles/hour alone no issue. 55+ an hour with 2 people. Super profitable. Where else can you go and make $3 per minute of your time spent? I should be very close to the 2000 mark by the end of the year just off my roadside stand. I didn’t sell anything nor am I going to in bulk this year. Didn’t feel like dealing with the weather and such.

Gday Joe, I remember suggesting you put a solar panel on your tipping trailer can you plug one into that power station ? having a tray truck with drop sides would allow pallets to be handled you don't need it now Im simply thinking about your back when you get old, I am always thinking about how I can minimise handling.Onion bags don't work here the wood has fibres that rip them on the first piece I know because I tried it and plastics are falling out of favour but I still have piles of seasoned flitches that need benching and bagging and like you said it all sells 👍.

I sell bundles year round the sales pick up once the temps drop. I use a manual wrapper from Hudson it was a thousand dollars cheaper than a powered one and really takes no effort to wrap bundles with, plus its light and easy to move I bring it to my wood. I stopped using labels since the ink was soy based it attracted mice to the bundles who would eat the labels so now without labels I can pre wrap hundreds of bundles and store them on pallets allowing me more time to process more wood !

Before you jump in to the bundle processing biz, check your local and state regulations. Here in NY, it is illegal to transport untreated firewood over county or state lines. To sell bundles and comply with regulations, it must be certified as kiln dried. Also even loading a pick-up with wood and driving it to a different location in your county you must carry a self-certification form and provide it to the customer..... Running into a DEC officer without a certificate is costly to your wallet.
@ohiowoodburner

Nice post. In Ohio they gave up on the county by county thing. It is state wide which means you cant take untreated firewood across state lines. By practice I don't deliver into PA even though I live on the border. It's just a thing you decide to do when your name is on the side of the truck LOL

Thank you for any help/guidance you are able to offer!😇👍

What can you expect to get for a bundle selling to convenience/hardware store? Campgrounds?
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner Жыл бұрын
The best way to figure what you can sell to a retail store is .... find out the retail price they are being sold for and subtract 40%. Most retailers work on a 40% markup. Campgrounds is a crap shoot. Usually a low price

@@ohiowoodburner Thank you for your thoughts on bundle pricing Joe. Down here in East Tennessee, there’s only a few places that actually sell bundles. Food City, Kroger, and some other big box grocery stores. I’ve also seen them at Ace Hardware (big brand) for $6.99 this past weekend . We have a lot of lakes around my home and campgrounds are a plenty. Most sell a face cord (4x8) for $70 (seasoned??). No one does the firewood stands like Adam and Dan do except around Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. Of course our winters are a lot lighter than yours and I can roughly heat my house on one 500 gallon ( at 80%-400 gallons ) tank of propane. My home has a flue, but it is used by the gas furnace. When I was growing up most people heated there house with Ashley wood and coal stoves. Regarding north east Ohio, like you in my former work life for a corporate National sign manufacturer (I’m close to your age), I once had the opportunity to travel to Ashtabula, Ohio to inspect some signage for Chase Manhattan Bank from a vendor that was producing signage ( I designed) for the company that employed me and I have to say that I really enjoyed my visit. My visit occurred near this time of year before the lake effect snow took hold. I toured the town and visited Lake Erie and was simply amazed at the vastness and size as compared to the Atlantic Ocean. I also took time to view the iron ore and coal mountains at the harbor that made Caterpillar Dozers look like Tonka toy’s in a sandbox. My observation point of the sandbox was at the top of the hill near the memorial dedicated to US Merchant Marines. My father served as a Merchant Marine during WWII. Again, Joe I want to thank you for sharing your insights and business discussions for making firewood as a profitable business model that has not been fully tapped into in today’s world. Respectfully, James

I havent got into bundles yet, but thinking about doing a roadside stand. We have a lot of traffic on a country road of campers going by and the world ATA is 20 minutes away. There are a lot of people that pass by the county road on the higway and does a loop back to the highway. So it may be beneficial to try the bumdle market and see what happends. Great information Joe!

You might be overthinking for a budding firewood enterprise. If you can purchase a cord of firewood at $200 that is 128 cubic feet times 1 cubic foot bundle sold at $3 you have a potential gain of $184. Start small and grow.

Do any of your retail store customers demand “kiln dried” firewood?
@ohiowoodburner
@ohiowoodburner Жыл бұрын
They do not. Kiln dried is for the national retailers who buy from a supplier who feeds their distribution center.

I stopped doing bundles for camp grounds. They were getting 7 dollars a bundle an I was getting 3 dollars delivered. They called me with a order an I told them they were 5 dollars a piece this year an they said they couldn't do that wasn't enough profit for them. An they never touched them the campers got what they wanted 🤣

@@joehannan1687 why would you care how much profit the retailer is making if you are getting the price you need wholesaling the bundles to be profitable? You set the price you need to sell a truckload of bundles at a time and they pay your price then that's all that should matter. It's like saying I will sell you a cord of wood for $300, but if I find out you're reselling it rather than burning it I won't sell you anymore, that would be silly.

@@jasone679 Mornin'... I get what you're saying and if our capitalist model allows for that to happen so be it a deal is a deal I just didn't understand the logic behind him agreeing to that low price to begin with my word that's practically working for free KNOWING who you're supplying will make MORE than double to never lift a finger... if 5 guys can supply the camp for 5/bundle and #6 comes in for 3/bundle the market overall suffers because they ALL are now subconsciously expected by the customer/campground to supply at such a low rate.
