The S35 v FF "debate" doesn't really bother me as I shoot on both - but if I were investing in anamorphic glass I'd probably go for a stronger squeeze factor just so I could go wild with the anamorphic look. BUT selling that look to a client is also tricky so they'd get used less often for professional work, so less likely to buy a set and more likely to rent... Selling the anamorphic look usually means finding a project that won't need cropping on socials(!) So maybe shooting on a 1.33x squeeze lens is an easier way of compromising to get some of that anamorphic magic whilst not going too wild on the delivery aspect ratio. Do you think you'd use this lens on a professional project? Also - I've been using the phantom LUTs with my Komodo and didn't realise they were available for LUMIX - your sample footage looks so creamy and lush, will have to try them out, good work!

I don't think you lose light with aps-c crop. In my tests 12mm 2.8 mft lens will exposure the same as 24mm 2.8 ff lens. Otherwise good video about anamorphics 👍
@exthander Жыл бұрын
Exactly!
@Average1212 Жыл бұрын
Correct, the exposure remains the same from ff to aps-c. Your effective FOV and DOF change. If you want a deeper DOF in low light there are actually advantages to aps-c, as you can maintain a higher DOF with a lower aperture setting. Its a glass half full sort of thing.
@9adriano21 Жыл бұрын
The one main reason to get the full frame , and the reason is heavier and more expensive it’s because it’s a 1.6x squeeze, vs the APS-C which is 1.33x.
@JoshCameron Жыл бұрын
Yeah totally aware of that, I just think 1.66 is such a heavy squeeze that if you were to shoot any anamorphic sequences, you'd kinda need at least one more focal length with a 1.66x squeeze as well. At least with 1.33x you can kinda get away with slapping it in a timeline that has also been shot with regular spherical lenses too :)
@jessecumberledge4530 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. A 1.33x just isn't worth it to me. Need at lease 1.6x to get very noticeable anamorphic qualities IMO. I have no problem with S35 though, great format for video.

This, plus on the a7siii I have to be in full frame to be at 4k which I don’t mind doing a little side cropping on. Also the flares are not so overdone on the full frame versions. And if you use the adapter you get full 2x

Dude, I am 100% with you. Was loving the Sirui 35mm 1.8 on my GH5, so I instantly backed the S35 version for my L-Mount system. For sure the 35mm is the best lens of this lineup. APS-C Crop was no problem for me, since I am shooting 4K 60p most of the time. The look of this lens is absolutely special and I love it! Furthermore I love to use it for video Calls. I was using Great Joy FF anamorphic lenses with my S1H in 6k Open Gate, which is also very nice if you need that. But as you said, there it is getting really heavy and I am starting to love minimalistic lightweight setups instead of heavyweight fully rigged. Therefore I am about to swap my go to system (S1H + Sigma 24-70) to S5II + Sigma 28-70mm. It is not a huge loss in quality but in weight and mobility for sure. Way better for gimbal work as well. Maybe I will wait for the S5IIX because of SSD recording, which is the main reason for me using the Atomos Ninja V. For sure I would love to see more of S35 Anamorphic lenses. :-) BTW: I absolutely recommend using diopter filter with this lens. Not only because of the minimal focus distance, but for the look you will get with it. ;-)

Josh, when it comes to aperture, T1.8, or T2.9, or f1.4 or whatever, the same amount of light is hitting the sensor regardless of size. The exposure values will be the same across all sensors. In terms of aperture, the only thing that changes from sensor size to sensor size is the depth of field.

Good break down of cost vs benefits. Generally agree if you're just looking for video S35 lenses are typically a way better deal. Most of the benefits of full frame lenses are going to come in for photography or some really niche use cases in the video world. Not saying there's no reason to go for the full frame version, but if you need it you'll know, and if you're at that limit where you need it chances are the difference in price tag won't matter to you because someone else is picking up the bill.

@rodthompson274Ай бұрын
Hi Josh. Love your videos and your presentation etc. Been doing this a while and bit confused about one of your comments. The f-stop equivalence, being "the smaller sensor gets less slight, it's just physics"? F1.8 is 1.8 on any lens and any format. The depth of field equivalence is different i.e 1.8 mft = about 2.8 ff, but the light gathering in is not the same. F-stops are calibres, meaning they are mathematically aligned by length/width so that lens "A" and "B" can be compared equally, which is the point, not something that changes (in light gathering) as the sensor or film format at the other end changes size. This tends to fall into a general mis-use of the depth of field/aperture terms I hear a lot like "smaller apertures let in more light" and "stop down to a smaller aperture to let in more light", meaning smaller aperture numbers I assume, which are larger apertures (smaller apertures having bigger numbers). This seems to be an on trend term at the moment as is simply wrong and confusing in a field already tough to understand. As a teacher and practitioner of photography for over forty years, I think it is really important we get the basics right, or they may need to re-write the physics books to suit the new wave of academics. This tends to be limited to the videography fraternity, who are by and large younger and have fewer mentors to call on (and seem to copy each other), but it needs to stop as new shooters are getting confused and older ones annoyed. Hope this is taken as intended.

As much as there may be an argument re 1.6x or 1.8x with FF Anamorphic lenses, I have been using a 1.33x on my iPhone 14 Pro Max (it needs some zoom, or post cropping to remove vignetting) but to be able to get footage with both and seamlessly split and marge footage is a huge bonus.

@@JoshCameron Thanks for the response! What second lens would you get as a compliment to the 35mm? Maybe the 50mm? Or longer?
@skrotfiske Жыл бұрын
Well, there's some information in this video that is sort of wrong. F-stops or f-numbers never change no matter the size of the sensor. F-numbers are just the focal length divided by the size of the entrance pupil meaning it will never change no matter if it's paired with a APS-C, Micro 4/3 or even Medium Format sensor. What matters when it comes to the amount of light that can be captured by the sensor is the actual physical size of the sensor. A full frame sensor is bigger in size which means it has more and bigger photosites which is what actually absorbs the light so no matter if you have a f1.8 on both FF and APS-C the FF sensor will always be better in low light as it can absorb more light. T-stops and F-stops are NOT the same thing, a T1.8 and a F1.8 lens are totally different. T-stops refers to the amount of light that actually comes through the lens while F-stops only refers to the focal length divided by the entrance pupil. This means one f1.8 lens does not let in as much light as another f1.8 lens because they have different glass elements which let's in a different amount of light. A T1.8 lens will always let exactly as much light through as another T1.8 lens as T-stops takes the loss of light while it travels through the different internal glass elements of a lens into account. This is why T-stops are used in cinema and not F-stops as two F-stop lenses will never (unless they're the exact same make and model) have the same exposure no matter if they're set to the same F-stop or not. So without knowing the transmittance (transmittance refers to how much light a specific lens let through and what percentage of light is lost while traveling through that lens) of the f1.8 lens we cannot know it's T-stop so saying a F-stop lens isn't as fast another T-stop lens isn't accurate. It might be in this instance but we can't know that so we shouldn't say that.

My take: You're still losing vertical FOV when shooting in APS-C so you are still losing real estate. Also I'd rather shoot open gate with a 1.6x lens to get the best image possible. And the new Sirui Saturn are now being made for L mount and they are tiny, 1.6x, neutral flare if you want, 58mm filter thread, and full frame. Yes it's more money but for me a much more interesting option with a more unique image.

People shitting on super 35 but going to watch the majority of movies ever made is quite hilarious. Its a fantastic format, idk where that elitism comes from. Great video, im thinking of getting a complete set or suiui anamorphics but the neutral flare ones.

what is it with people trashing on super35/apsc? its been the industry standard longer than full frame

Looks too clean and sharp with flares too defined for my taste, this lens although being anamorphic doesn't feel anamorphic. Great review !

More squeeze is always better for the anamorphic look! But for $600, I think 1.33x is a nice flavour :)

Looks weak, far away from old original anamorphic adapters as kowa,sankor etc 🥱😃

WHAT THE ACTUAL F..? You are not losing ANY light hitting the sensor when you shoot S35 Vs FullFrame. You just lose visual (not actual) depth of field relatively to FOV difference with the same lens put on FF. Now I understand all the guys around FF... People just don't know a sh*t. 🫠
