how do managers know if you’re in guest areas/areas that you’re not supposed to be?

5:28 vessel familiarization and safety test? Also do you guys receive mail at ports?
@JohnGleasonComedy6 жыл бұрын
Yeah they give you all the safety information and then the last day of the cruise you go and take a test. They do get mail in ports, its a bit more delayed than normal mail. And some ports have sketchy security so mail has a tendency to get stolen. Not sure if its the same, but I have had stuff get ordered and then never received.

How about a video describing how they assign your cabin?
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
Its kind of a boring process, typically its just replacing who you are replacing when you sign on. At least with Entertainment. There were very specific positions and we were all directly backstage in a single hallway.
@carolynlucca32697 жыл бұрын
John Gleason Hi. It seemed to me that they at least tried to keep people from the same department as being cab inmates. When my first roomie left (a casino dealer like me), she was replaced by another dealer. What that how your ship seemed to be?
@aman64956 жыл бұрын
Hey John! I just wanted to request you on sharing whether even the Kitchen staff ie. the Chefs and the cooks get to get off the vessel as much as people in other departments? And If possible can you please share some information, experience and suggestions about the life of a Chef or a cook on board?
@JohnGleasonComedy6 жыл бұрын
I am sure they get some time off the ship like the rest of the crew. All depending on the schedule for sure. It will also depend on your department and the other cooks.

@JohnGleasonComedy8 жыл бұрын
Ah Congrats! You can wear your normal clothes that first day. What will your position be? You should have a uniform provided to you during your welcome aboard tour and such...if not then you can walk around in your regular clothes but you may not be able to go into guest areas yet. Then you will have to wait for your luggage to get on board before you have full access to your stuff.

John what would happen if during your contact a family member got sick or possibly passed away what's the general policy on that
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
I have seen it happen while i was working. Im not sure about getting sick, but I would assume it would need to be something very serious. For a death in the family, I have seen people sign off to go home to do whats needed to be done. Then when they return it may not be to the same ship, it could be a different ship.

Hi John, thanks for the videos, they are very informative. I have my first call from the Recruiter tomorrow, because I applied for an HR position with Disney. What can you tell me about the interview process? Is the process difficult for someone who has never worked on a cruise line before?
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
An HR position? Thats pretty cool. I hope the call went well since this was from 2 weeks ago! They will tend to ask you about past experience and how you would feel being away from home and working in a fast paced environment.

I'm interested in the AV/Technical/Videography side of things, what would be some suitable jobs for a person wanting to work in one of these fields?
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
Some cruise lines have a video crew that document some things for the guests. They would then be able to purchase the DVD At the end of the cruise to take home. They also work on the channels that are available for the guests to watch in their cabins as well as movies that play up on the big screens.
@Jamessy657 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was kind of what I had in mind, I had a look at the criteria though, apparently you need a years worth of experience to work on the bigger cruise lines, haven't looked at the smaller ones though! Thanks for the advice!!
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
most cruise lines will have smaller ships that they may start you on. Then once you get accustomed to the way things work, you can move over to the bigger high tech ships.

hmm. that is interesting. You do not have any doctors that are in your area? Where are you from and what job did you apply for? I went just to my regular doctor for my medical.
@ashleyclark85768 жыл бұрын
Thanks for responding! Since I posted this I was able to get a hold of the Carnival medical contact for the US. Apparently there was some kind of glitch in the pdf that they sent me, so I couldn't see the number you can call if you need to have an appointment in a non-port city. False alarm! Thank goodness.

Sorry John another question I'm currently taking lifeguard training and have some jobs I can take during winter and summer is there a Desiree for lifeguards on ships or just swim at your own risk?
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
Some cruise lines actually have a life guarding job. I have been a life guard for a long time and always wondered about how it works. I worked for the YMCA for 10 years, long before a lot of these new limits on guarding and stuff, so i would be guarding for hours at a time with no break, and all by myself. I know Disney does have life guards on their ships and I am sure they enforce the 10-15 minutes on and then get a break and what not. Especially since the pools are so busy. Thats a place to start!

Can you get hired on with your spouse and if so is rooming changed? Any differences for this situation? What about them visiting or whatever?
@JohnGleasonComedy8 жыл бұрын
i have seen some people get hired with their spouse. some are lucky to get on the same ship...they do have priority for a couple cabin over some people who are just dating. If they want to visit you need to wait until after your first contract for them to come stay with you. They may cruise on the ship, but you wont be able to get them access to the crew areas and your cabin just yet. That may have changed, but my first contract we couldn't get anyone a crew discount yet.
@catcarter66737 жыл бұрын
Hey John, thanks so much for all of your videos! I am studying entertainment design and want to get cruise ship job as a sound/lighting/or floor technician, however, I primarily want to work on cruises that travel to Europe or places outside of the US. Do you have any experience with that? Would I need to perfect my fluency in another language? Would I even have any say in which ship I want to be assigned to? Lastly, Do you have any suggestions on which cruise lines I should look into? Thank you!
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
Thats awesome! Well, you would not need to worry about your other languages. You will not have any say in ships when you first start. Then moving forward you may get a small selection of what is available for your job as there are usually a limited number of theater techs on each ship. Any of the main ones that have the big Broadway style shows for sure. Those are the ones that will need a Light Tech or any of the other. Carnival, RCCL, Disney...etc.

@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
What job are you applying for and what cruise line?
@vladimirpopa85767 жыл бұрын
Hello sir! Could you please tell me what exactly happens at the end of the contract. If for instance, I (along with other crew/staff members) successfully finish the contract, what does more precisely happen from that moment onward. Will anybody wait/escort us to a coach and then directly to the airport? Will we leave the ship all together (boom - open the gates over 1000, 2000 crew members need to exit the ship right in this moment) or separately day by day.. Hopefully you understand my question. I would like to know how things unfold when you finish your contract and you start to prepare going home. Thank you in advance.
@JohnGleasonComedy7 жыл бұрын
the day that you sign off, you meet in the lounge and wait until all the guests get off the ship. Once that happens you get escorted down through customs and go through your last check. After that you have to make your way to the airport or however you are getting home. Your flights are arranged prior to your sign off. I know certain crew members have a certain window of time before they must leave the country. There is a lot of waiting and it is very similar to the day you sign on.

how do you get contracts and also you have to wait for the another contract or you get it right away
@JohnGleasonComedy8 жыл бұрын
When you first get hired, they will provide you with a ship and you will start your contract. Towards the end of your contract, most of the time they will already have your next one lined up. You let them know how much time you want for vacation and then they will list the ships available when you are ready to return. Sometimes you get a choice, others you do not. If you do not have a ship by the end of your contract, there is still a chance you will get asked when you are home. Or they may not want to extend another contract to you and someone forgot to let you know.

@JohnGleasonComedy8 жыл бұрын
Hmm...you may get used to it and it would depend on how rough the water is. Some cruises dont really travel too far so it never gets to rough....others, its rough all the time. Or it depends on the time of year. I would take some dramamine if you want to ease into it.
