A real life capsule to sleep in. Cool!
This is one of the most "Only in Japan" experiences possible - staying in a capsule hotel in a Japanese city. It’s cheap and convenient but why do people actually stay here? Is it ... you know ... big enough?
In this episode, John Daub and Masahito Kawahata head to the Shinjuku Kuyakusho-mae Capsule Hotel in Kabukicho to find out.
Japan’s Capsule Hotels are more than cheap places to crash.
This type of hotel is distinctively Japanese in style, cramming in as much as possible into a tiny space to make a comfortable experience, but can a guest really be comfortable in one?
More and more foreign tourists to Japan want to give it a try! How small are these capsule? How much is a night? What are the rules?
Is it worth it?
Miss your last train?
Work too late?
Argument with your husband or wife and need a place to crash? Those might be the normal reasons why Japanese salarymen spend the night at a capsule hotel.
For foreign tourists it’s a chance to experience a unique style of hotel that seems more like spending a night at the morgue.
Before you pass judgement on capsule hotels, some things about them may surprise you!
What can you find at the capsule hotel?
Here’s a list:
Capsules
Lockers
Restaurant (Open 18:00~24:00)
Community Room
Vending machines
Laundry machines
Fast and free WIFI
English speaking staff
Women’s only floor
Japanese-style bath and sauna
Close to Shinjuku Station, bars, Golden Gai and Robot Restaurant

Am I able to leave my suitcase at the capsule hotel if I stay at one for more than 1 night or do I have to bring that with me as well when I leave for the day and come back again after?

Cost to build and maintain is the biggest obstacle, and then making sure homeless comply, homeless are much more likely to commit crime, meaning secutiry would need to be higher just in case. That costs too, then you have to pay staff to work there, since it is a 24 hour system

@@arthas640 To be honest, if you plan ahead, you can get a nice room at a Japanese business hotel for just $5-$10 more. I've traveled to Japan a million times and always stay at a hotel for $40-$60 a night. I really don't understand why people stay at these (other than for the experience or last minute desperation). But I totally agree it's a waste of money to stay at a fancy hotel when exploring Japan (unless you're rich).

As an American who has never traveled outside of my own country it's really nice to see how things are in other countries. Japan is cutting edge on so many things. I don't know how I'd react to a capsule hotel due to my clostrophobia, but after seeing that 2 grown men fit, though not well it doesn't seem too small.

I so love the culture in Japan, and I have to admit that it is one of the most beautiful countries ever seen on the globe. If I had to go there for one reason and one reason only. To take in it's beautifully modernized cities and find some good food. And I heard they are well known for their sushi. And I do love how polite and courteous they are. Also their train system is awesome and have to admit that I am highly impressed.

Love to watch your videos, John. I’ve stayed in the 9 hours capsule hotel at Narita Airport, Tokyo, for a early flight. The pod is very cosy, and exceptionally quiet. I feel like a baby in my mother’s womb. That’s really Buddha way of living. 😁 I have a locker large enough for my 29 inch luggage. The bath area is really clean. Love the experience and definitely will stay in this chain capsule hotels in central Tokyo next time.

John, your videos almost have a therapeutic quality to them. I watch them at odd hours of the day and they never fail to have a relaxing and soothing effect on me. It doesn't hurt that you also learn a thing or two about an exotic and intriguing culture. Keep up the good work -- you have amazing talents and a very bright future ahead of you in this industry. You are a true professional and a master of your craft. It's only a matter of time before network execs give you your own TV Show. I also wanted to make a small request: would you mind investigating and producing a short about the sumo culture in Japan? It's always been something that fascinated me -- and with your talent, I have no doubt you will create magic that will keep us enraptured, entertained and educated for years to come. Greetings and best wishes from the USA!

one of the highest suicide rates in the world, one of the highest working hours in the world. its not uncommon to work 19 hour straight. most bigoted and xenophobic society in the world, lack of green spaces in tokyo everywhere, most cramped place ever, smallest apartments per person in the world. one of the most expensive place to live in the world. one of the lowest birth rates in the world no time for family! probably the most competitive job competition in the entire world!

Well the idea is to avoid squatters. Its really meant to be a one night hotel mainly so people don’t have to worry about finding shelter when they’ve missed the last train or people who know they’ll have to be back in the city early in the the morning and don’t want to make a long commute again.

You gotta wonder why these capsule hotels haven't been established in the west, I'd prefer them over anything else if I were to be traveling on my own. No more hostels where you sleep with ten people in a single room, no more overly expensive hotel rooms where you pay 150 dollars a night, and that doesn't even include breakfast! Someone, for the love of god, open one up in the US/Europe.

I could still remember hearing this guy snoring loudly...some few cubes away...haha...

When I first saw the capsule I remembered my sleeper bus journeys from Bangalore to Chennai (India) and in the bus the upper berth was even smaller, and I had to adjust with my luggage there itself, the berth was sort of shaky, the drive was quite rash...with the conductor shouting the name of the town at each stop ..but somehow I managed to sleep through everytime...but these capsules are bigger 😁😋

Can't film when people are there so I got permission to film during checkout before 16:00. At this time, I could speak at a normal tone and also set up cameras in tight spaces in other capsules like in the thumbnail. It was hard to get that shot, impossible if there are other people there. This was one of the only capsule hotels in a convenient area (right next to Golden Gai) that had English support, used to tourists. They're not my clients but for 2M+ views, they probably should have been :P -john
