People "are seeing their male friends and loved ones struggle, look for direction and not know where to find it," says the Washington Post's Christine Emba. Scott Galloway adds, "Sex and companionship are huge motivators, and guardrails, for young men." The two join CNN's Michael Smerconish to discuss Emba's WaPo article. #CNN #News

Young men already know what’s waiting for them at the end of getting educated, climbing the corporate ladder, working the long hours, asking for a date, marriage, and children. It’s being awarded with divorce, abandonment, parental alienation, and various forms of legal wealth extraction. Many older men around them are broken, lonely, and filled with regret. Can we blame them for checking out?

That's what no one talks about. The reason why men in the past like our granddads were motivated to work as they kept the fruits of their labour - money, house, and children. Now the man works for everything while the woman is the one who keeps it. I read a divorce case in the newspaper. This woman divorced her husband and the judge gave her alimony (£1000 a month) and all the money in the man's savings account (£250,000), the family home too but the husband kept his business. A few years later she takes him back to court demanding he double the alimony to £2000 a month because she lost the 250,000 in a property investment and is now "broke". The judge agreed. She took her ex-husband's money, blew it, and came back for more. Btw, by the time she came back for more money, he was already re-married.

After the war, families were able to not only survive, but thrive on a single income, could purchase a house, support the wife and the kids went to school and had a good education. Now, you can not buy a house on 2 salaries and many are getting barely enough money to survive on, and rent something out. This model of the ever increasing greed of capitalism is not sustainable. Imagine if a man wrote an article about how women are lost and then tried to tell them how to fix it. It wouldn’t be hard to find an angle, maybe around Instagram, social media or online dating. Focusing just on men’s issues without acknowledging the larger social issues around online behaviors from both sexes is myopic, particularly around demonization of masculinity. the problem is that parents are no longer dying. Healthcare is so advanced that it keeps your parents living until 80+ yrs old which is your entire lifetime, when in the past it used to be 60+. They mostly misdiagnose the problem by framing it as males being “lost”, like the problem would be fixed if we just wised up or were taught how to be. Notice how women’s - and everyone else’s- issues are always framed as systemic problems with society being unfair to them, but for men, it’s not society’s fault, it’s men being “lost”. Actually society systematically oppresses males, other than the very successful few at the very top. Just 3 points (out of many others) will prove it: 1) Men are the vast majority of workplace injuries and fatalities. All the dirty, dangerous, exposed-to-the-weather, physically demanding jobs are 99% male. When did you last see a female plumber? Look around you. Everything was built, installed, maintained and repaired by men. Look at all the workmen on building sites or roadwork construction you usually walk or drive past not giving a thought to, then imagine you were an alien just arrived on earth wondering who the slaves were: you’d have to conclude it’s men! We’re dying working these dangerous jobs, yet you only ever hear about the so called “pay gap” with women supposedly earning less - even though when adjusted for hours worked, overtime, seniority, time taken (or not taken) off work, danger, etc it vanishes. But the majority of men lead these hard-working but unnoticed lives while being told we’re privileged! We do the jobs that women turn their noses up at, but women just see the wealthy men at the apex and think the grass is greener for all men, while the rest of us don’t even enter their calculations. Well it’s wrong. Instead of this constant bogus push to raise women’s wages in boardrooms and corporate suites where they’re already well-off, there should be a push to raise wages for real working blue collar men, and better healthcare and insurance for all our workplace injuries. 2) Divorce law: massively abusive of men, especially fathers. So many men end up with their children effectively and kidnapped out of their lives by the mother with the backing of the state. On top of child support, why does alimony even exist? - the woman should get a job and provide for herself - become an apprentice plumber if you’ve never had to work before. So many men end up homeless because on top of (mostly fair - except where paternity fraud occurs) child support and mostly unfair asset division, so much of what they earn is gifted by the state, in the form of alimony, to the woman who divorced him. 80 to 90% of divorces are initiated by women. Young men see this, and know that getting involved in a relationship with a woman is dangerous. Paternity fraud should be a crime. According to all studies, around 10% of men and children who think they’re biologically related as parent and child are not. The studies are there - go look it up. And 10% is not just how many women cheat, it’s how many cheat, plus get pregnant, plus lie to a man to defraud him into raising the offspring of another, like cuckoo birds do. Such fraud and abuse of men should be a serious criminal offence. What is more important than family? Yet family law abuses men - and in this case even rich men: Paul McCartney of the Beatles was married to Linda McCartney for 4 years, but had to pay her (in US $) $48.7 million!!! That’s $34,000 per day for every day they were married, with her living a life of luxury in his mansions! How many Beatles songs did she perform? Can anyone give any rational reason she deserved that much money???? You can’t, because there isn’t one! It’s sheer madness. How about a man permanently maimed in a workplace accident? - does he get $34,000 per day? No, so why does a gold digger wife who divorces a rich man? But Paul McCartney could take the hit. We should be considering all the men impoverished or made homeless by women who society for inexplicable reasons deems entitled to so much of the man she divorced’s assets and income. And once you’re made broke like that, good luck attracting another woman - you KNOW how women are about a man’s money. 3) Education - boys used to outperform girls at school by 15%. This was declared a crisis and the education system was overhauled to better suit the learning style of girls. It overshot, and now girls outperform boys by 17% - that’s 2% more than what was deemed a crisis and action taken for when girls were disadvantaged. But now boys are disadvantaged nothing is being done. The school system should be overhauled to improve outcomes for boys by providing teaching that meets their learning style and needs, to bring their results up to the same as the girls (without overshooting the other way again). Summary: Society, in education, work and family, is systematically oppressing (the vast majority of) males, while telling us we’re privileged, deserve nothing, and are guilty, bad and wrong just for being born our gender/sex. But somehow these “experts” - especially the woman - show no idea about the systemic oppression and instead call us “lost”? We’re not lost, we’re systemically oppressed. Remove the oppression and we won’t be “lost” anymore.

I am widowed and have not had to date since the late 70s! I wouldn’t know how to navigate the world of singles today and I don’t know how anyone does. It all seems to be “friends with benefits“ and easy, relaxed, sexual encounters without any sort of Commitment or suggestion of a relationship. I’m not saying we didn’t hook up back in the Ice Age but today it seems like it’s unusual for two people to have an actual relationship. I hope we return to a time when intimacy was part of a developing promise of companionship, and not just scratching each others itches.

Not saying your like this but even though I’d like a long term relationship/family I know I’m hesitant because sooo many good men in my family have been destroyed by petty selfish women who they thought loved them. Men fall in love so easily then once your married your wife makes you a slave and the second she gets tired of your flaws and finds a better alternative she’s gone, with your kids, your money, everything. If you try to fight it she accuses you of anything and everything and your guilt is assumed. My own parents stayed together which is rare and I love them both for that. But even my mother threatened divorce because she was in a mood, I told her if she did that I’d never speak to her again, and she didn’t do that again. My dads not perfect but neither is she, nobody is and we should know that before we get married. I think women are less selective these days because divorce is so easy and incentivized. If it doesn’t work out they know they can bleed them dry and find someone else, then repeat, and nobody will ever say they did anything wrong. So now I’m the one who needs to be selective, and women aren’t used to/expecting that. They can be insecure too and if you don’t want to instantly jump their bones but instead get to know them, they freak out or assume your gay or impotent or something. Casual hookups are easier than ever, but having been in a long term relationship, they don’t interest me as much anymore. (After a few beers, different story). Also the age thing is confusing. 18-20yr old women can be attracted to older guys. But if a guy in his mid 20s likes a girl who’s 18, he’s a creep? Like wtf. My parents are 10yrs apart (dads older) and nobody had a problem then (mom was 20 when they met). So in short, ya, I agree. Dating is fucked

Trying to get a date to even show up, let alone one with a relationship agenda, is pulling teeth. All men want is a hookup. A friend with benefits is even difficult because men get so weird about emotions and sex. Like they think I can't separate the two so they get weird and do it for me, dysfunctionally. Oh, do I sound like that wall of text above me except the roles are reversed? Probably because he's ranting about a stereotype that everyone experiences. Mom threatened divorce cause of a mood? Oh my. I got my leg dislocated "because of a mood." Men are afraid that women will laugh at them. Women are afraid that men will kill them. Guy above would do well to learn this.

@cheezykrafts8134 so you were abused, and that really sucks. Cause now you're afraid of men and don't trust them. Understandable. But that causes any guy looking for a relationship who has two brain cells to steer clear right away. Why would I want anything to do with a woman who is afraid of me by default? How could I trust someone who doesnt trust me? So, no suprise the only ones showing interest are just there for hookups. And "friends with benefits" is always dysfunctional, if you're actually friends that is. Someone always catches feelings, or worries the other is catching feelings when they're just using them for sex.

@@cheezykrafts8134huh? I agree maybe some of his stuff sounded a littleee exaggerated but he made a lot of good points. You obviously are just as bias. The problem now is women only want to date 20% of the male population. So the other 80% are just average guys that may have loving hearts and want to have a life and family with you but they're seen as "untouchable and "undesirable." And then one key point you're missing(or maybe you're not)is women have the ULTIMATE power. The power of reproduction. Without women, men's genes die. Women select who lives and dies in a biological sense. Who to breed with and who dies off. Men have their ways and many are scum that I call out daily on behalf of what they do to women. However. Women can ruin men and also take them out of the gene pool. Men don't have that power over women. And financially they don't have near as much power anymore. It's 51-49% now in favor of women being the higher earners and much more college graduates. So you take the factors I mentioned, along with women now becoming the wealthier gender, there is a reason men are concerned and depressed about future prospects and the future of Western civilization in general. Women like yourself act like men are purely reactionary and unrarional, when they have a legitimate right to feel that way. Women can feel however they want and nobody tells them not to. In fact, society encourages it. I just don't think the gaslighting is necessary on your end. It only leads to more grievance and anger.

I think a big part of the problem is what we in psychology call cognitive dissonance (mixed or confusing messages). For example, people are often told to "Be yourself" or "Be authentic". The problem with that is if a man does or says something that is considered inappropriate he may be chastised. For example, if a man says, "I want a woman who can cook", some women may be bothered by that statement even though he is simply saying what he wants. To be fair, women also deal with similar challenges. For example, if a woman says, "I want a man who is in a good place financially and can provide", that might cause some people to see her as a gold digger. How should we deal with these inconsistencies? I recommend the book Don't Be Yourself: Be A Better Person by David Ross

The gaslighting against men is on a scale unmatched, though. Very few men would chastise a decent woman for wanting a man "who is financially stable and can provide" if that expectation is aligned with reality (say: expecting 50,000$/year). But if a man makes a very small demand that is by far easier and more attainable than beating the median salary (by definition: being above 50% of men), such as "don't be a wh*re, don't post indecent pictures, don't stuff your face, and cook", then a massive wave of women feel entitled to label that demand as misogynistic. That described gaslighting is at the very core of the modern problem: men are held to their ultra traditional role (must compete over at least 30-50% of people), whereas women are free from any accountability to their own traditional role (including the most basics that are basically "control basic urges a little").

@@emilyfeagin2673, there's no problem with that statement, if the ask is more mutual, such as... "Hon, can you try to fix the car? I'll get started cooking dinner." The societal problem is: women are frequently making themselves useless to men. Increasingly large portions of women favor working for a different man than their husband, developing skills that are useful to other men than their family and husband, spending money on other men's business interests than their own family, and sleeping with other men when they're young and pretty than sleeping with their long life husband and partner. Being a partner is a job and duty. Feminism has convinced you otherwise: it convinces women that women have no responsibilities, and need no exchange. Unsurprisingly, there is a rise in the number of men dropping out of a system where they're ask to maintain their responsibilities while women don't.

So far in today's western world and from what I've understand within the view of the mainstream media (and far left ideology) it's okay for a man to be a woman and a woman to take the role of a man in the traditional sense (1950's roles, as the breadwinner or head of household), but when a man wants to adamantly take this role it's toxic masculinity. It's also acceptable for women to sleep around, but it's toxic masculinity when a man sleeps around even though its 10x harder for the average man to have several sexual partners than it is for an average woman. Everything is backwards now in this regard. Men are praised for calling themselves and acting as women, but are seen as toxic/insecure if they act dominant, independent, overtly confident, etc. Whereas women are praised for taking the role as a dominant and independent figure, but when they express adhering to the traditional values of the 1950's woman they are seen as anti-progressive and/or slaves to an old system. In summary, today, women can be 1950's men, but men are vilified if they do so. Men can be women(maybe even the 1950's traditional women's role) but women are vilified for wanting to be a 1950's woman. Men are vilified for sleeping around, but women are praised for it, even though in the end 90% of the time women have the final say with intercourse presently....and women can get sexual partners 10x easier. There is no logic to societal structure that was adhered to for a reason, which is another lengthy discussion for another time. You're right in that it's definitely harder to make a living and support a family or even yourself, but not addressing the attack on 1950's valued role for both genders is being blind. Especially the role of men and their masculinity.

This is a PG sanitized version of this issue. It took a while but men of all ages finally came around to the realization that society’s idea of a “good man” is one to use and abuse, then kick to the curb, if so desired, to put it frankly. The focus is never on what is good for the male but rather what can you extract from him. Namely, his labor and his life’s worth. Women, the state, the courts, nobody ever has the welfare of men in mind or ever did, if the truth be told. If you think people in general are not that brutal, calculating, and exploitive, then go play by their rules. Go try to be a good man. You'll soon see that even if you’re dumb enough to go seeking their validation, with a probability that is no better than a toss of a coin, you can wind up losing the better part of what you’ve worked all your life to achieve in divorce/family court.

100% True! You hit the nail on the head here, because this is exactly what these people DO NOT UNDERSTAND. If a Man tries to be a good man or do all the right things, he will not only find nothing works in his favor, but he will also be ruthlessly punished and abused for it. It's a suckers game. Real Men don't go to college or work 9-5 jobs, get married or concern themselves with being a part of this system and the daily grind. That's what's reserved for slaves.

This is a really jaded version of what I said: As a man, no one but your family care about you by default, unless they can use you. Women can create people. That is intrinsically useful to the species, and everyone knows it. But as a man, you are ignored until you make yourself useful. Your also the sacrificial part of society, dont try to deny it. This creates a natural pressure to do something when your a man. Ive never really thought of the genders as seperate. Ive thought of them as an arbitrary half of the population subject to different pressures, and therfor different results. Its not society. Your set up from birth to be in that situation. Dont resent reality. Just do your best to be happy in it. Its not evil, its pressure. My point is that yes all people want is to extract thing from you. But if you can make yourself compitant and functional, you can build, say, a group of people who actually care and appreciate you. I dont know what that could be called, but would probably be nice to have. I bet they might consider your welfare relevant too.

This identity politics has been promoted by the conservatives for awhile. While criticizing identity politics. I'm skeptical of black women embracing white male identity politics. The crisis of white men not getting laid seems to be the last thing she should worry about. The only contributing factor to the failures of men I heard them cite is the upward mobility of women. First, if a man can only be attractive to a desperate woman, that's pathetic. Second, that suggests this is class or culture struggle. Men are failing because women are succeeding through preferential treatment. The fact is the white men are experiencing a taste of what women or minorities went through for generations. The fact that black men were always criticized for being unsuccessful and now white men are criticizing women and minorities for white mens' failures is ridiculous.

I wore a skirt so I deserve to be called a slut. I say no so I’m an ugly lesbian. Essentially the tables are turning. Woman have been struggling for years.

The economy is terrible, but we have had decades of decline in wages that would allow our sons to leave home and provide for themselves and a family. Don't blame their lack of sex on woman's autonomy from WW2 era gender expectations when no capitalist society is working very hard on giving worker's dignity. You know what else those soldiers had coming home? Productive unions winning wages to push families into the middle class. Right now the 1 percent has everything and private failures are made public ones by banks, utilities, companies to big to fail.

Had to pause the video to read the article...really well done, nuanced and tries to grapple with the complexities. One facet missing I believe is that, unfortunately, the loudest voices of feminism seem to believe that men are a) a problem; b) should be treated as "women in training". Men and women (and, I have to assume, every other element of the spectrum) have different needs and these need to be accommodated for everyone. Another facet is how much time young men spend in front of a screen rather than in mixed groups where nobody has a phone and they have to interact...aka basic socialization...it's the only way to learn, make mistakes, recover, and grow. I'm convinced my son grew up "normally male"...that is, confidently masculine while able to treat women with respect and dignity...at least in part because we did not have a TV in the house, and we did not give him a computer or cell phone until his late teens. It meant he spent his time outside with other friends, which were a mixed group, of course getting into the usual "trouble", but learning the essential social skills that serve him well today.

Lol - well, men ARE the ones with the problem. So, yeah, they are the problem. If they want to solve their problem, they need to conform to what women want. WE aren't he ones crying about loneliness. WE don't need to do anything. This is an "epidemic of lonely men" not an epidemic of lonely women. And by lonely, the talking heads apparently just mean men who are put out that they can't ejaculate on or in women. Poor fellas. What a crisis.

Ive been predicting this for well over a decade. Yeh sure, if you're handsome, famous, rich or successful, you're still doing well. But if you're anything else, you're suffering from the socially oppressive system of promoting females in all aspects of life. For men, this is a winner take all, bully the lesser, condemn the weak society to begin with. Pile on the concept of lets promote women and girls ahead of boys and men at all cost and of course you have boys and men adrift, depressed and detached.
