Aphios Ey that actually clears up those details for me. He did think about kissing her during her birthday but the thought made him vomit in his mouth which is one factor that kind of contradicts that. But his antisocial nature does explain his fishing hobby and his Baba Yaga house. Also I have seen episodes where they get along and act more like friends so maybe this short takes place later in time.
