I saw this movie in theaters, and what made that evening more memorable for me is that as soon as we left the theater I experienced the worst thunderstorm I've ever seen in my life with lightning strikes consistently occurring every 3 seconds for like an hour. Me and my friend looked at each other a little freaked out and my friend says "so it begins." I don't think I'll ever forget that moment.

The aliens were not immune to diseases here on Earth like we humans are. That’s why they started dying. It’s similar to how millions of Native Americans died of diseases brought by the Europeans to the Americas which they had no immunity to (for example: smallpox). Anyways, I highly recommend Free State of Jones, a very underrated movie!

It's a cool twist on how you'd think a movie like this would end, but if you think about it, an alien civilization smart enough to find us would be smart enough to know they can't survive our atmosphere or whatever it is. So it's kind of dumb in that regard.

@@aussiefarmer4955 This movie had an interesting ending. And it is entertaining. Though it definitely stretches reality. And I'm not talking about the fact that these are fictional aliens attacking this planet. What I mean is to think that a species that is so advanced that they have mastered space travel, that these aliens wouldn't be aware of other planets atmospheres containing deadly contagions, and that some sort of self contained breathing apparatus would be necessary, is pretty damn ridiculous. That just wouldn't happen.

I never, never understood the hate this movie got/gets. Sure, it's got issues (the pacing a is a bit all over the place in spots) but god damn Spielberg did an amazing job showing how literally boned we were until the aliens got sick. And then people complained that the aliens got sick, when that's how it happened not only in the original film but the novel also. The directing in this is masterful (it's Spielberg what else did people expect? lol) and while Tom Cruise isn't my favorite actor or anything - he did a phenomenal job of being basically a douche bag at the start and realizing how much he not only needs his children but how much he loved them and would do anything for them. Really great stuff. The son, was the weird character but I understood his reasoning. And this movie including the red vines stuff, blew me away. I didn't think they would show it let alone show what they were doing with people to make it etc - really well done.

@@LordLOC I grew up on the novel and the 1953 movie (on TV, in the 1980s), and my parents gave me a cassette of the 1938 radio version, which I've actually performed for a live audience (as the doomed reporter Carl Phillips and the Artilleryman). My mentor in the Mammoth Cave survey is a great grandson of H. G. Wells, so I'm friends with the Wells family, particularly its American branch. So I was both hyped to see and skeptical of the Spielberg version, and I was pleasantly surprised, several times. It captures the tone of the novel as well as either the famous 1938 or 1953 versions, and better in places, while throwing bones to those of us who like its famous adaptations. Maybe not perfect, but the others weren't either.

So in just being in our world, breathing our air, touching our planet, taking our blood, they unknowingly were taking in every bacteria and virus their bodies werent used to. So they died of disease. So the original book was written in 1898 set in England. The whole point is a commentary on imperialism. When the Europeans first reached Africa, they used advanced technology like guns and swords to just kill and burn everything and they were practically unstoppable. They weren't interested in trading or talking with the locals they just wanted the land. But after a few weeks the Europeans died of malaria. The Africans had lived and died in their homeland for generations and earned an immunity to malaria, earned the right to live in their home. The book turns this on its head. The mighty British empire wakes up one day to find strange aliens show up with advanced technology and just start destroying everything. It was H.G. Wells way of telling Europe "how would you like it?". Theres a quote in the book "and yet man has fought among its own races, such the Tasmanians wiped out in an extermination by settlers. Are we such apostles of mercy as to complain if the Martians warred in the same spirit?"

I was also confused by the sudden demise of the tripods and the aliens themselves, since I was introduced to "War of the worlds" through this movie. "War of the worlds" is a famous book by H.G Wells. It's more or less the same story. An alien invasion on our planet. For its time, it undoubtedly scared a lot of people. The thought that some evil force greater than God could be a grim reality. Also, the book was published in the 19th century, so go figure. However, this version you see here, the story of Tom Cruise and his kids to be precise, was thought of by director Steven Spielberg and Tom. They wanted to make a re-imagining of H.G Wells's story. There was also another War of the worlds movie in 1953 with Gene Barry and Anne Robinson. When I watched the 1953 version, it made me understand the ending better. The aliens weren't meant to survive on our planet. All their observing, studying and methodical planning didn't prepare them for one detail the aliens overlooked; our germs. The kinds of germs that would give us a cold or the flu killed them. They practically had no immune system ... against our kinds of germs anyway. Like what you hear in Morgan Freeman's narration in the beginning of the movie. "As men busied themselves about their various concerns, they observed and studied. The way a man with a microscope might scrutinize the creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water." Said man with a microscope could learn a lot from observing and studying said little creatures swarming and multiplying in a drop of water. But, he won't necessarily know everything there is to know about them, now, will he? It's foreshadowing what will happen to the aliens. But, hearing that for the first time, you wouldn't pick it up right away. Foreshadowing done without the vast majority of the audience identifying it right away. Also, Gene Barry and Anne Robinson played the grandparents you see standing outside the front door of that flat in Boston when Tom and Dakota Fanning (Rachel) finally make it and reunite.

I just made that point above, the 1950s were the golden age of science fiction films. Outside of a few early flicks like Metropolis or the Boris Karloff Frankenstein movies, science fiction was limited to serials. After Forbidden Planet hit the theaters it made them cool. I recommend The Day the Earth Stood Still, Earth vs the Flying Saucers, Them! and They Came From Outer Space, for some campy fun. Also, the 1953 version showed Northrop's YB-49 Flying Wing drop an atomic bomb on the Martians which is really cool to airplane geeks like me...

This was an excellent adaptation of a classic tale, and hands down one of Tom Cruise's best-ever performances. And the little girl, Dakota Fanning, was incredible. Of course, director Steven Spielberg knows how to get good performances out of kids. It was indeed a bacteriological or viral infection that took down the aliens. Whatever they did to prepare for an interplanetary invasion, they did not properly inoculate their troops, or else their inoculations simply failed. The original novel by H.G. Wells (who also wrote The Time Machine and The Invisible Man) was meant to examine, explore and expose the hubris, cruelty, and weaknesses of the British Empire of the late 19th century, which was still a world empire at the time. Now the big dog is America, and, as someone else stated, there are also allusions to 9/11. I wouldn't be too hard on Robbie. Yeah, he was a dumb kid, but a big piece of his attitude also reflected the attitudes of a lot of young American men in the wake of the September 11th attacks. I think this was meant to be a commentary on that, that gung-ho spirit of youth acting in the principles of spirit without considering the potential consequences. And don't forget that his dad was a terrible dad in the past, he didn't have too much moral authority over him. Tom Cruise's character sure didn't provide any solid guidance before the events of the movie. I think it speaks well at the end that both father and son seem to have grown to appreciate each other's perspectives a little more. As a bonus, the actors who portrayed the grandparents at the end of the film were the original actors from the classic 1953 George Pal-produced version of The War of the Worlds, Gene Barry and Ann Robinson. kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3_Uo2ati7CUepo

9/11 was still fresh in a lot of people’s minds when this film came out, and I think Spielberg really wanted to explore some 9/11 themes and imagery with this movie. As annoying as Robbie’s character is, I think Spielberg was showing the mindset a lot of younger people had after 9/11 (or any time someone’s country is brutally attacked) which was to run off and join the military to “get back at them”. There is also a good bit of just general 9/11-esque imagery: Tom Cruise being covered in white soot (people were covered in white soot when the WTC collapsed), the clothes fluttering down from the sky, the big bulletin board filled with pictures of missing people. As for the ending, the aliens in this movie are defeated the same way as they are in the HG Wells novel that this is based on. The aliens are basically killed by Earth’s natural bacteria (apparently from drinking our water, or from the blood they were taking out of us). The ending is supposed to be kind of ironic, in that we threw all of our weapons at the aliens and couldn’t touch them, but it was Earth’s smallest organisms that took them out.

@@jacksmith-vs4ct Well you are right. But H.G.Wells wrote this story right around the time Pasteur came up with his germ theory for disease. @@jacksmith-vs4ct the plot in this 2005 script is quite good because it was modernized a bit. The really outdated part is the ending for sure, no advanced civilization would visit a planet without hazmat suits or something similar. Still, I think it works in the context of the story and it is quite "original" in the sense that it wasn't mankind's might and bravery that overcame the invaders (as usual in these movies/books) but it was simply nature taking its course. Also at the time the novel was written, the ending was a parallel to colonialist empires starting to crack and crumble.

H.G. Wells "The War of the Worlds" was meant to be a testament to the overwhelming power of nature. Like you said, all of man's weapons and technology were ultimately useless, however rather than showing this through the lens of man vs. nature like other stories such as "The Day After Tomorrow" it showed an extraterrestrial enemy who man could not overcome. Like mankind, the aliens (Martians in the original novel) did not respect the power of nature, and despite their seemingly endless power, they were ultimately defeated by their own sense of invincibility. A reflection of mankind wrapped up in one of the most iconic sci-fi novels of all time. Glad to see you react to such a classic.

(Tropic Thunder) He's willing to act in movies that do not fit the norm of what people watch. (Eyes Wide Open) (Vanilla Sky) He watches out for, and takes care of his costars. (Edge of Tomorrow) (Any Mission Impossible movie.) He slides into any role perfectly. (A Few Good Men) (The Last Samurai) (Legend) Most of all: He never, ever, under any circumstances, pushes or places his personal beliefs in any project. He's there to do a job, and he will do it, and make sure that everyone around him is safe. He is what actors should aspire to be.

If you were wondering why the military in that night scene were trying to shoot at the aliens despite knowing nothing would work against their shields, it's because they were trying to slow them down to help people leave. They don't make that clear but that's somewhat a terrifying thing to think about itself. knowing you stand no chance against the aliens but still firing at them in hopes you can slow them down to get the civillians to safety. True soldiers. They knew they were very likely going to die but they did what they had to do. Plus side it kind of worked in that moment coz the tripods did slow down having to lazer the tanks instead of just grabbing all the people they could.

Ever listened to Orson Welles' radio show of the same name? That was freaking awesome! No wonder folks at the time thought it was real and freaked out! (It's somewhere on KZbin) Fun Fact: the freeway escape scene was a combination of cgi, miniatures and clever camera work! The Square scene will always be my favorite. Saw this around the same time as Law Abiding Citizen and Fracture! Good time for cine-goers! Anyone remember the 80s/90s tv series? The ending of this reminded me of that. I was convinced the Martians possessed Robbie, his mother, grandma and Tim! How else they could've survived and the area untouched?

The book goes into more depth about the death of the Martians. It's theorised that microscopic life either died out or was skipped entirely in the evolutionary history of Mars and so they didn't even know to bother looking for viral and bacterial life. Basically, they died of Cholera.

I also wanted to say about the hill scene with Ray and Robbie. I used to think this movie was ok. But, in recent times, it's grown on me. I like it much better today than I did back then, looking at it differently and what have you. The hill scene made me think of that cliche in war movies where a country is at war or on the verge of war and everyone's eager to join the fighting. You have the protagonist, typically a young man who wants to join the call to arms, then you have the father who has seen and/or served in combat try to talk him out of it. The son doesn't want to listen to the father, he thinks he's wrong, a coward etc etc and the two probably butt heads with each other. Like how Mel Gibson's son, Gabriel, in "The Patriot" enlists to fight the British, much to his father's disapproval. And, no matter how hard he tries, he can't get his son to reconsider. "Don't do this! I know you wanna fight! I know it seems like you have to, but you don't! You Don't! Stay for your sister! I'm not letting you do this! You can hate me, but I love you!" "I need to be here! I wanna see this! You need to let me go!" Those same words they say to each other on the battlefield could also be said with those two in a living room. A considerably calmer environment aside from the yelling. It really emphasizes "war" in "War of the worlds". And, yeah. Robbie was an asshole like his dad was. It's that classic thing where you start out disliking or even hating main characters, then the shit hits the fan and you gotta put all differences aside and you'll probably start to like them during the struggles and hardships. Throughout the movie, Robbie loses the habit of calling Ray by his name and calls him Dad more and more. Sure, it was pretty selfish of Robbie to walk away from his family like that, but even so, there didn't seem to be any hard feelings between father and son as they shared one last dramatic look at one another before parting ways. And, the final hug at the end is enough to know all is forgiven.

It tells you how they died right at the end man. Humans earned their strong immune systems after thousands of years on earth being exposed to germs/bacteria. Many humans have died and it helped us get stronger to where we have better immune systems. The aliens came back and invaded and they did not have the immune system to handle the bacteria they haven’t been exposed to before. I didn’t like this movie before but as an adult I like it much more.

This was a radio show, I think in the 30s, and supposedly some people didn't hear the parts about it being a show and took it seriously. Supposedly some people were panicking and even killing themselves. However, apparently those reports are exaggerated. In the radio show, the aliens died from our germs and diseases. This is basically a movie version of that radio show.

I love this movie. I love that the aliens died from a cold. Lol! But there is a very interesting history of this story. The original story was based on the book War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells. It was done as a radio news broadcast starring Orson Wells in 1938. But apparently, they didn't announce very often that it was just a story, and some people thought that it was a real news broadcast and that Martians were invading. So it did cause some real riots, and people lost their shit. Lol. Another interesting fact is that the old couple at the end of the movie (that played the pregnant women's parents) were Gene Barry and Ann Robinson. They both played the main characters in the original 1953 movie. Every Halloween my brother plays a copy of the original radio broadcast.

Devin, if you want to see an even older movie based on the same H.G. Wells novel do the 1953 classic version "War of the Worlds". There was a famous radio show of this story in the 1930s done by Orson Wells (no relation to H.G. that I know of) where Orson and his fellow Mercury Theater radio actors got into BIG trouble doing it. Do some research on why he got in trouble as it's not what you might expect! And the complete radio show is available on YT. The narrations by Morgan Freeman are lines taken from the H.G's novel. It was the common bacteria and protozoa that killed the Martians. Not sure which germ species, but likely an all out attack by them all! 🖖😎

The War of the Worlds was published on the heels of a lot of other "Invasion Literature" popular in England at the time of publication (1897). Britain had savagely invaded and colonized so many other countries (India, Tasmania) that late Victorians were channeling their Imperial / Colonialising guilt into paranoia. "What if someone attacked us the way we attack others?" So there were some popular novels around this time that depicted an invasion of Britain by one outside force or another. H. G. Wells upped the ante by making the invading force one of unspeakably higher technology than even the super high tech Britain of his day. Glad this version has elements of the 1938 radio version, and plenty of nods to the 1953 film version (including a cameo at the end from stars Gene Barry and Ann Robinson, as Cruise's ex in-laws). Both the radio version and first film version are excellent, and hold up well today. Spielberg lets us WotW fanatics know that. His version (this one) also has elements of the 1897 novel that had never been depicted in the popular adaptations of the work before, like the Red Weed. Tim Robbins' cameo in the house basement scenes is reminiscent of the crazed Artilleryman in the novel and radio version, with a touch of the Curate character (a clergyman) who is an important minor character in the novel, and sort of referenced (and softened) by the minister character in the 1953 movie. I normally don't really go for Tom Cruise (there are other actors also from my hometown who I like better) but he did what Spielberg asked him to do, play an "everyman" kind of character, not the suave stunt pilot or super spy we see him cast in around the same time in his career. As a huge fan of The War of the Worlds and its previous adaptations, I'll give this version a strong B+ or even A-. It's a tough field: it's a riveting novel to begin with, and it's been done very well before. An indictment of Colonialism, I think it's a story that will always be adapted every 50 years or so, probably forever. There's no really beating H. G. Wells' original novel. It's accessible and gripping to this day. It's not too long, either, one could pick it up and polish it off in a day. Long out of copyright, you can easily download the novel for just the cost of a Google search for a free ebook version of it (PDF, HTML, whatever).

I loved seeing this remake in the Theater when it came out. For some strange reason, many people were critical of this movie without ever being able to articulate why. It was as if we went through a period where everyone thought it would be cool to be some kind of contrarian movie critic. The truth is that this was a very well made movie. Spielberg was trying something a little different in this movie in which every single scene was shot from the perspective of Tom Cruise’s character. It was as if the entire alien invasion was witnessed through a single person’s eyes. So what it affectively did is it really immersed the movie viewer into the experience as if we were being pursued by the tripods as we ran for our lives from one location to the next. It adds a whole extra layer of tension because of it. Ultimately, I’m not sure how they could have made the movie much better, so I’m continually puzzled why this movie gets the mixed reviews that it gets. It’s definitely well worth a watch in my opinion.

I love this movie but can clearly see where it’s flaws are and why some people aren’t keen on it. Robbie is a very strange character whose motivations are extremely confusing, which doesn’t help when he’s one of two people were supposed to want TC to protect. WHY does Robbie want to go and fight? What does he need in his life that doing that is the only way he’ll feel fulfilled? And more frustratingly, WHY does he “need to see this” when the army charge over the hill? There’s no payoff for it, he just runs away. He leaves his sister who clearly is dependent on him, making him quite unlikeable which is annoying when you’ve spent the movie rooting for his survival. I’ve watched this film a dozen times and it’s no less unclear what is going on with his character. Lastly, from a pacing perspective, the final part goes super quick. There’s not enough time from the aliens going from completely dominant to them all being dead, it’s like 15 mins swing which is very jarring. A few extra scenes setting up their demise from the farmhouse to the city would have helped with this. Love the film, but hope this explains issues that are likely why people don’t completely love it 😊

@@TobyRawal, I 100% agree with what you said here. Yea, the brother seemed like one major, unnecessary, drama injection. His choices always seemed bizarre and selfish. And you are right about the pacing in the end. It was like the entire movie, the tripods were annihilating everyone, and then the last 5 minutes of screen time they all just simultaneously caught a cold. I do still feel it’s worth the watch for that early scene where Tom Cruise is running with the crowd, from that first tripod that came up from the ground. In the theater, you really felt like you were right there with him trying to outrun the bear faster than your friend. It was crazy seeing everyone getting dusted around him even when he tried ducking in and out of buildings and store fronts.
