All the Diggers stationed in Port Moresby while you’re bombarding them: “Guess McArthur and his lapdog Blamey have given us the shortest of straws once again, bugger.” On that note I still don’t understand how Blamey is a Field Marshal and Monash isn’t...

Don't worry McArthur will show up for a photo op later once everything is done.
@jamesfrench73943 жыл бұрын
First the US doesn't use Field Marshal. That rank is 5-Star, and it only gets used on rare occasions when the Army has been built up; and is called: General of the Army, usually reserved the Top General who sits in DC, works out strategy and deals with the pols. Second, McArthur had actually been put-out-to-pasture, he was the Commanding General of the Army of the Philippines in the process of being built up, which colony was scheduled to be given independence in 1946 (great timing, eh?). He also had the duty of commanding the US Army units (plus air back then) stationed there. Third, McArthur was a brilliant mind, but as for field commander... The US during the depression had no opportunities for military men, so like the others he languished, sitting in the shed. He refused his commanders' plans to use the B-17 bombers to attack Taiwan on the opening day of the war, and as a result they were destroyed on the ground. He was nick-named 'Dugout Doug' for his cowering in bunkers on the island during the early days of the invasion when he should have been up the peninsula organizing the defense. His command fared poorly during the month-long Bataan campaign with a distinct lack of direct, energetic leadership. In short, McArthur was a mixed bag, great brain, but mercurial, full of bravado, but raw, front-line courage...? I think Truman said it best when he opined years later: "I wish Roosevelt had ordered Wainwright to leave, and let McArthur handle the surrender."

@@jamesfrench7394 Ermmm..... He didn't say MacArthur was or wasn't a Field Marshall - he was comparing Blamey and Monash (both Australians)...
@jamesgriffiths75883 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfrench7394 I think you've missed the point of my comment entirely mate, I never said MacArthur was a Field Marshal, only that he was a prick that got a lot of men killed for no good reason. He was an impatient tit with little concern for the welfare of his subordinates and an individual driven by selfish political and egotistical ambition. It's easy to be full of bravado when you're some five star general sitting comfortably in an office far away from the pointy ends of your decisions and your ultimate ambition is simply to re-take the Philippines in order to save face and claim savior status. He basically drew a reverse plot of the Japanese advance through Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific towards the Philippines and ordered those beneath him to get there as fast as possible. He showed his true colours in Korea when he was fully ready to start a nuclear war, a pretty clear indicator he had very little practical understanding of the on-the-ground implications and ramifications of his decisions on high. To the second part of my comment, here's some non-American history and education for you. I refer to Blamey as Field Marshal because as an Australian Field Marshal I am completely correct in referring to him as such. We as a Commonwealth nation based our military structure and titles on the British Army, therefore the highest rank and Australian could theoretically achieve in WWI and WWII was Field Marshal. Blamey was the only person to recieve the rank, given postwar in 1950 I think, and since then the rank has been retired. My issue is that Monash, who was a far greater man, leader, strategist and tactician than MacArthur and Blamey combined, was not awarded the rank during or after WWI despite fully deserving it. He genuinely concerned for his men and essentially invented modern combined arms warfare in WWI through his efforts to minimise the risks his advancing infantry would face. This was achieved by massing artillery, tanks, planes, etc. to batter potential sources of resistance into submission before the whistle to go over the top even blew. The higher Monash rose as a commander the more of a positive impact he had as he could apply his meticulous (but importantly, practical and realistic) planning skills to ever broader operations. He won the personal admiration and endorsement of King George the Fifth and was Knighted in the field by him in August 1918, something that hadn't happened since Waterloo and hasn't since. Monash was Commander of the Australian Corps that halted the German Spring Offensive advance of 1918 at Villers-Bretonneux, just shy of Amiens. The British 5th Army had completely disintegrated under the German Advance and there was a very real risk the Germans would take Amiens, sever the connection between the French and the British, and win the war. Our fine Australian men were thrown into the line by Haig in a last-ditch effort to stop the Germans reaching Amiens. I guess despite all his incompetence, he at least recognised we were some of the best he had available to him by 1918 (only took him four years!). Monash masterminded the set-piece Australian advances after the reversal of initiative at Villers-Bretonneux and subsequent battles saw Australian advances consistently push the Germans back. The momentum our Diggers created under the leadership of Monash began to snowball and we kept going, then advances were quickly drawn up all along the broader Western front, culminating in the Hundred Days Offensive that caused the effective collapse of German army. For a variety of reasons, mainly the fragile ego's of the British and French, these critical contributions of Australian leaders and forces that quite literally turned the tide of the war in 1918 are largely unknown in popular history. In the late war the British Army had effectively ceased to be an effective fighting force. The crack troops of the original British Expeditionary Force had long since been wasted by their commanders, and Kitchener's Army of hastily recruited and poorly trained conscripts often deserted their positions with little resistance. Due to this Commonwealth forces on the Western front like Canadians, New Zealanders, Indians, Australians, etc. were the best troops of the 'British' Army and were doing a lot of the heavy lifting when and where it mattered. American units were even put under Monash in 1918, such was his quality and reputation as a commander by mid-late 1918. Haig had wanted Americans to replace the decimated 5th Army but was repeatedly refused as you yankees didn't trust him, and rightly so. By the end of the war Haig had accepted Monash was far better as a battlefield commander than he was and gave him free-reign and full support (behind closed doors of course) to plan and command as he wanted. In England as always, Monash's exploits and the good work of Australian and other Commonwealth forces was the work of "Our Marvellous British forces". By the end of the war Monash was one of the best known, widely renown and highly regarded Allied commanders on the Western front. He was recognised by all including the German generals he repeatedly outmanouvred in 1918. Battles Monash orchestrated as a Divisional Commander in 1917 and later as Corps Commander in 1918 accounted for many of the "dark days of the German Army" Ludendorf would record in his wartime diary. He is extremely well decorated for a Commonwealth Commander, recieving some of the highest accolades possible from the French, British, Belgian and even American armed forces. Here is the list lifted straight from Wikipedia: Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George - postwar Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath - Knighthood awarded in the field by King George V, August 1918 Mentioned in Despatches (6) - from the period of his rise from Brigade Commander to eventual Australian Corps Commander between 1916 and 1918 Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour (France) - postwar Croix de Guerre (France) - postwar Grand Officer of the Order of the Crown (Belgium) - postwar Croix de Guerre (Belgium) - postwar Distinguished Service Medal (United States) - postwar You can see from the list that he was widely regarded in the immediate aftermath of the war as a legendary figure, and all accolades were merited. Monash was the cream of the crop of Commonwealth commanders that came about and ascended through the archaic British command structure that stymied progress in the early war and saw the lives of many Commonwealth forces wasted. Ultimately these Commonwealth Commanders and forces would be the saving grace of the battered the British Army on the Western Front in 1918. Monash should absolutely be a Field Marshal, the only reason he was not given the title was to protect the image of British army figures like Haig. He is not recognised and respected as widely as befits a man of his impact and achievements by the popular history for WWI. An ongoing campaign exists to get him posthumously promoted to Field Marshal, and I really hope it succeeds as he deserves it more than anyone.

Hey Wolfpack, one thing I've noticed in my own gameplay is that you can easily avoid getting detected in the submarine by parking it as close to the enemy formation as possible, torpedoing and then immediately diving below them to the opposite side as quickly as possible. I haven't lost a single submarine this way. Also starting the retreat timer as soon as torpedoes are in the water helps.
@puttasudheer3 жыл бұрын
But isn’t the last part a bit cheesy?
@oldstyle77603 жыл бұрын
@@puttasudheer Really just a precaution, you can do without that last part. I go full throttle under the enemy formation, the enemy destroyers don’t find you no matter how much noise you make because they’re searching in the wrong place. By the time they get to where you used to be, you’re already steaming away.
@brassyandclassy33453 жыл бұрын
@@puttasudheer Unfortunately in this game it's a matter of cheese or be cheesed because the AI knows exactly where you are at all times and will always make full ahead to wherever you fired your torpedoes from. There is NO stealth after you fire, silent running is completely useless since they'll be pinging away on active 100% of the time. As soon as the AI gets within a certain range of you, you WILL be detected and you WILL be sunk unless you press that retreat button. Wolfpack could avoid this by having his submarine immediately go full throttle away from the attack, but he doesn't, so his subs will simply be unfortunate victims of bad game design.

I volunteer on the North Carolina museum- seeing that attack and my beautiful ship hit like that hurt just a little bit. Interestingly enough, the REAL North Carolina's torpedo hit was portside forward. From looking at the hits and knowing the ship, I'm guessing you flooded #3 main turret's magazine, definitely engine room #4, maybe #3 as well, which meant those spaces would almost completely flood and need to be abandoned- hence why speed was down to 11 knots (she was on 2 shafts). Eductors and the main circ water pumps MAY have been able to keep up with the flooding to a point, but all the torpedoes hitting in roughly the same spot would've pretty much doomed anybody in those spaces. Not surprised you didn't sink her though- those battleships are TOUGH.

Sub I-21 reached 161 meters submerged, in case you are wondering. Check your video #21 at around minute 12:00 elapsed, and you will see that with orders to submerge to 180 meters, and steadily going down that when the timer allowed you to brake-of and retreat from the Battle Map, I-21 last achieved 161 meters. -- Interestingly, your last (planned) depth setting during the engagement was for 140 meters, but in the heat of battle you adjusted speed (increase) and when you did the depth setting also changed (coming up), and you said: No, No, keep diving! With that statement, the depth setting suddenly jumped twice (?), and settled on 180 meters. (I am guessing that this was due to keyboard hotkey strikes, since the mouse was not moving.) Sooooo, we now know that I-21 at least can get to 160 meters and survive... maybe they all can?

The best way I've found to escape reprisals is to fire your fish, dive to around test depth, plot a course roughly ninety degrees to your current heading and GTFO at top speed, as long as there is no duct and thermal layer your sub usually escapes unscathed and undetected.

Type 95 torpedo wakes would pretty much be impossible to see at night as well. The best way to evade destroyers is to leave combat right after your torpedoes hit. Which is lame and frankly poor game design.

@@Wolfpack345 They can still see which side the torpedo hit on. And what you said still doesn't discount his point about going top speed at 90 degrees from the direction you shot the torpedos, which you constantly fail to do. Going minimum speed is only useful when they're right on top of you already. Even if they know where the torpedo was shot from, the AI is programmed not to change heading until it actually detects you. You're the one leaving the sub basically where it fired from, which NO sub captain would do.

Re: the 6 torpedoes, this game seems to have the same issue as many other games in the genre, (looking at you UA:Dreadnaugh) where the damage is too compartmentalized, doing infinite damage to only one section won't sink the ship, it needs to be spread out to more ship compartments. With that in mind, and just how the game works, I'd say a wider spread of torpedoes is encouraged in this game, even if it's not realistic. Much love, please give us more!
@Gustav_Kuriga2 жыл бұрын
That's because that IS realistic. Many battleships were designed with an AoN design scheme (All or Nothing), meaning the bow and stern weren't as protected and were designed to not be necessary to sustain flotation. Battleships essentially had a central raft that was prioritized.
@sproge21422 жыл бұрын
@@Gustav_Kuriga great, then you won't have any issues giving me an example of a ship that survived 6 torpedo hits at the same time, right?
@Gustav_Kuriga2 жыл бұрын
@@sproge2142 The Musashi took 19 torpedo hits and 17 bomb hits before it finally sunk. You're thinking too simplistically. You need to take into account damage control, compartmentalization of ships, the ability to counterflood, whether a certain part of the ship was even vital to floatation. As I stated before, battleships of the era were built with the All or Nothing scheme in mind, meaning that while getting hit multiple times in the stern would be devastating for their ability to maneuver, unless they weren't able to counterflood it wouldn't be likely to be fatal. Especially with how far in the stern those torpedoes were in this video.
@sproge21422 жыл бұрын
@@Gustav_Kuriga maybe I wasn't clear, when I say "survived" I mean "did not sink", so using an example of a ship sinking doesn't really help, it's not like you can say "oh she would have survived 18 torpedoes". im pretty sure your subs have spottiing aircraft, also the new beta makes it so your aircraft go straight after dropping, And your kates rockets are really effective against destroyers and subs, Also dive bombing in formation tends to miss more compared to telling each aircraft to attack.

While it may feel like leaving might be too much cheesing it really isn't considering how the enemy magically seems to know straight away where your sub is after the torpedoes hit and how the depth charges automatically change the depth they explode at.

@@Wolfpack345 Got to wonder at the Game's program; I am guessing that all torpedeos are 'vanilla' (i.e. the same). Those Type 95's IRL not only had a significantly heavier warhead than all other WWII torpedeos, but too, they used a much more volatile and explosive mixture, such that it was almost dangerous to have on board!
@magni56483 жыл бұрын
@@jamesfrench7394 The explosives the Type 95 used weren't actually particularily more explosive than those used by other torpedoes. What it did do was use pure oxygen instead of compressed air as the oxidizer for its engine. Pure oxygen is highly flammable, but also provided the torpedos with a hell of a lot more range and speed.

I'm kinda guessing the area that took all the same hits got oversaturated with damage- hits were all in roughly the same space, so those spaces were complete write-offs and the crew within them killed, but the damage was just concentrated to those areas, and wasn't spread out at all. And since those two engine rooms and that turret can be sealed off, the flooding wouldn't spread.
@Paragoth3 жыл бұрын
For bombing runs on ships from bow to stern, have you tried changing the formation? The formation you've typically used has the VALs spread out horizontally but you're bombing a target that is perpendicular to the formation. Maybe adjusting it to match the direction of the ship in relation to the formation would net better results.
