You should probably hold off on using your Betty's as torpedo planes and re-arm them for high level bombing. As torpedo planes they are such large targets although they can absorb more damage than a Kate. Yeah, I know you get unlimited land based aircraft - it's just the principle. Crew of 7 versus crew of 3 on a Kate.

Wolfpack, I've found that you don't have to let your torp planes spiral down if you don't want them to. You can order them to ~200m as you are lining them up for the attack and that way you could possibly get a simultaneous attack with bombs and torps. At least I've had success doing it like that, sinking the Yamato and a Myoko CA in one wave of 12 Dauntless and 12 Avengers.

@@togamid No, the planes will descend to the proper drop altitude by themselves on the attack approach. You could order them down lower (40-50m) but I don't know if that has an adverse effect vis a vis AA. I have used Avengers and ordered them down on the deck straight away but it did seem like they were more vulnerable going in at that altitude.

I know it's unrealistic but in the game, if you go full speed away with a submarine after attacking a ship the destroyers are less likely to find you because the AI goes to the location the submarine was at when the torps were launched. If you speed away you are less likely to be found.

Again, go for sustainability. One BB + 1 CV TF in the battle area, the other en route/rearming and simply cycle them around. This way you'll always have fresh fleets in the area and can respond to any threat at any moment. You can either focus both on a single target, or have them track two targets individually.

Another thing the devs changed was the timing for air ops. It is no longer 0500 to 1700 but 0500 to 1800, which it already was but the in game rules said the former. i remember launching aircraft plenty of times at around 1730 when the in game rules said i shouldn't be able too, hell even launched at 1759 once, but never after 1800.

You seem heavily invested in the vals, yet the torpedo bombers hit more consistently and with a heavier punch. I might consider attacking with 30% vals in the lead to slow or cripple the fleet and then torpedo bombers to finish the heavy hitters. Agreed that the destroyers are a problem. Narrow, which makes them hard to hit with bombs and fast, which makes them maneuverable enough to dodge torpedos.

Just discovered this a few days ago, you can set your bombers to skip their bombs off the surface of the water a few times and hit the side of a taller ship, just set speed to max, and altitude to 200ft.

My IJN play though: It's 24 Aug 1942, The allies have tried to land at Guadalcanal but we have denied them access. The island has now well built up. We have had to take Malaita from the Allies and the now they have attacked Florida Island base where ground forces are battling for control. We are still work on getting Guadalcanal to level 5. We have destroyed one CV and 5 BB. Currently we have two battleship task force operating in the area and our two air craft carriers are north of Malaita which will start moving north of Santa Isabel as we don't want the allies to know where it is. The plan is to try to create a third task force to cover the Guadalcanal as Task Force 7, 8 and the carrier force resupply where it will head to Port Moresby to remove it's ability to service and resupply ships so we can start to focus our attention solely on New Hebrides. If we have the troops and supplies, we will take Rennell Island and use some of our subs around New Hebrides so that their attention will be there as the Task Force 7, 8 and the carrier before they attack Port Moresby. So their force will be somewhere else so well will not be blocked from our overall goal of pounding Port Moresby into the dust. We have lost 3 SS, 10 DD, and 2 CL. Where the enemy has lost 4SS, 27 DD, 18 CL, 19CA, 5 BB, 1 CV, and 48 MS. Repair wise we have six ships in repair docks which includes the Kongo.

wolfpack i discovered that the best strategy to sinking ships with kates is level bombing with 800 kg bombs than put your kates into line ahead formation and make sure the distance between them is 150. also when you attack a bigger ship aim little before and after the red circle, this is useful to damage all parts of the ship

not sure but it seems that the Vals begin engagement at 500m and have to climb to 1,000 m to dive bomb. The Kates on the other hand seem to be starting at 1,000m and have to descend to 100m to attack with torpedoes. Their starting altitude for level bombing I don't recall seeing as yet.

Just a tip, if u send all planes in 1 attack, u will lose less planes because AA will be split to more target. Soo, split carriers for RTB isn't a good idea.

I got curious and tested aerial torpedoes on the NC. turns out that the Torp Bulge reduces damage by 70%, meaning my torps would only lightly damage then flood 1 compartment which damcon quickly fixed. I did end up getting a lucky hot on the bow which knocked out the main guns and caused alot of flooding and fires.

When your sub attacked, all the torpedoes hit in the same area, limiting the flooded portions of the hull. That's why the NC was able to survive. Ideally you want to spread out the damage if you know your weapons can defeat their protection. The aerial torpedoes, at 18" diameter, are smaller than submarine (21") and surface torpedoes (24"), resulting in a smaller warhead. The NC's underwater protection system may have been better able to absorb the energy of the smaller torpedoes, allowing her to survive the massive number of hits you scored. In that case, putting several hits in the same spot would break down the torpedo defenses, allowing the later hits to cause more flooding. Admittedly, some of the hits you scored would have been above the torpedo protection due to the huge list she had. One of the BBs sunk at PH was hit on the edge of the deck while she was sinking, causing very different damage from the earlier hits on the torpedo bulges. I have no idea if any of this is modeled in game, though. If you want to fly in the Spring Offensive, you should sign up on the Entente weekly roster. It was pretty full last week, and was an absolute blast.

You are going to experience less attrition in your Kate squadrons if you time their drops more closely to the Vals. The AA gunners will prioritize whichever squadrons enter range first. Would love to see you build up that base on Guadalcanal so that you can launch Bettys from there.

The North Carolinas survival might have been due to damage saturation. A compartment that has been struck by torpedoes already and flooded completely cannot flood even more but can still shield the rest of the ship.

You really ought to attack bow or stern on with Vals (and any dive bomber). When you attack from the sides, like you would with a torpedo, you just reduce the chances to hit because the target is smaller.

Depending on the bomb it wouldn't need to hit the sub. Depth Charges don't hit the subs. Its the shock wave that does damage. If a bomb exploded around the sub it probably would do some damage. The bouncing bomb that destroyed the dams in the Dambuster raid didn't explode on the damage but a little away from it and did far more damage than if a bomb was exploded against it.
