Her initial reaction to azerite gave me all I need to know about her motive "she was no longer a dark lady or even a queen. She was a goddess of destruction and creation (...) She could deal death on a scale that (...) will change everything." The biggest issue I have with her going full lich queen mode is that the horde by and large goes along with it. Most horde races are living beings - sooner or later she will turn on those if she is opposed to life itself even if it's just because it's more convenient to have direct control over them as undead beings. The motivation for the actual burning of the tree - to make a random, dying elf loose all hope left - appears comical mustache twirling super-villain level.

There's something I find so interesting about player psychology and perspective because every time I watch this cinematic I have a huge smile on my face. I resonate a lot more with Sylvanas than with the sanctimonious Night Elves. I have always seen the Alliance as the bad guys, ever since the RTS days. FOR THE HORDE! Forever and always.

The shades of grey are still there. It's been a while now so I imagine you've seen how a lot of the Horde leaders are absolutely NOT behind her decision. Her choice was explained in the two-perspective story on their website where you can see Horde & Alliance versions of the build-up to the tree. When see's going on about 'hope fades' and other comments in the animation, it's a reference to the original plan in the written story (which didn't involve burning anything), but thanks to Saurfang, she believed burning it would be the only way to secure the original goal. In short, the whole goal was to secure peace indefinitely via splintering the Alliance, starting with occupying the world tree and having the alliance in-fight over how to counter it. Malfurion surviving then became the symbol of hope (rather than the tree itself), so she decided to make a different statement. Baine is pissed with this (and Lordaeron). Saurfang openly contested her and feels it is his fault in the end. Even Nathanos hesitated in both situations. Gallywix, well, what does he care - profit to be made. We also have no troll leader, but you can be Vol'Jin or any equivalent would have been mega pissed. Not sure how it is going to go - it feels like Garrosh 2.0 so far, yet I feel there will be a different twist for Sylvanas in the end rather than just becoming the next Horde-Leader-Gone-Sour. And, of course, we have old-gods and Aszhara on our doorstep in future.

While Sylvanas has committed an atrocious evil and is building herself to appear without a heart, rest assured that the vast majority of the Horde does not at all agree with this. She yearns for victory and respect toward the Horde, but what sets her apart from the rest of us is that she is willing to go to extremities of violence, regardless of there being honor or not. I play Horde, but seemingly contradictory to that, Night Elves (along with Draenei) have always been one of my favorite races (both to play and in general). #FortheHorde, not Sylvanas. I pray that the Sylvanas the Horde used to know will arise yet again and that the Night Elves can find peace. Lok'tar

Well, it's like Sylvanas said in the beginning. "Ours is a cycle of hatred. Alliances forged and broken. We have payed the price for sharing this world, and we have forgotten what makes us strong." Well... gonna have to think hard and deep about what she means. What does make us strong? War? Ruthlessness? Not clinging to hope? This cinematic shows us that Sylvannas justifies her actions by her own experiences with war, civilian death and loss of life against the Lich King. An overlord that she managed to defy and outlive in the end. So what is that "strength" she speaks of? She certainly seems to believe that hse knows da wae.

You know what i have hope in? That all the reactions of the Horde players that watched this showed how horrified they were by her choice (a choice she made out of spite -- the plan was to occupy the tree but a NE said something uppity to her and she changed that plan to burn hope and kill civilians). It shows that the Horde knows what honor is -- and more importantly-- what honor isn't. She needs to go down or step, whatever it takes, and Saurfang needs to take her place.

I honestly love Sylvanas, from trying to protect her people when she was still alive as a high elf as Ranger General of Silvermoon. Arthas LITERALLY ripped her soul out. After his “death” she threw herself from the top of Icecrown, she died and was resurrected. Yes she’s made out to be the bad guy especially in the burning of Teldrassil, but you have to remember. She’s failed 3 times now to save her people, well her undead people but still, from Garrosh to Genn. I think she truly feels she’s failed her people in life and in death, and I think in someway as warchief she’s trying to save not only her people, but also the entirety of the horde. For the Horde!💕

I'm very new to wow (played the starter trial on and of for a few years but I have a proper account now) and was torn between horde and alliance, and I actually really liked Sylvanas. Her lore and her ideals. It seemed like she just wanted her forsaken to be accepted. She seemed okay with forsaken living peacefully with humans, but the humans were being assholes. I was really intrigued while playing my first proper toon, an undead Warlock, a few weeks ago. Then I was watching Wow cinematics like old soldier and learned about this event. Now I see Sylvanas was much better off getting a clean warriors death. The lich kings control seems to have had a lasting mental effect. She's not cut out to be Warchief and she needs to be dealt with swiftly. I can't support the horde as long as she's in charge.

True that. Demoralizing the Alliance by burning down Teldrassil is exactly something she'd do because she's a pragmatist and always thinks ahead. This idea of "Only fools believe that hope will save them." is rather a consequence of someone questioning why she is doing this. Now, is she an evil character? Ofc she is, there is no doubt. Is she badly written as a character? No. She's actually really well written. The thing that I think brings this overall scene down is that Blizzard kinna shot themselves in the foot with making Garrosh a villain too, in a previous expansion. Comparisons will inevitably be drawn. Some characters will hate her, and only a few will like her - I personally still consider her my favorite character, despite what she does, because of her characterization.

I'm a Horde player with heart and soul, and Sylvanas has always been my favourite character. From the beginning. But while I found her methods (mostly) still tolerable in the past, now she's finally gone too far. I feel for the Alliance, and I feel disappointment. I was thinking, if there would be an ingame quest choice at some point to either keep standing by Sylvanas' side or overthrow her, I'd surely choose the latter. I'm on the Horde's side and want the best for the Horde as a whole; I wouldn't betray _them_. But I'd gladly 'betray' that which leads them all into ruin, in hopes that something better suited might take its place. That said... Blizzard just ruined her character. I really liked Sylvanas a lot. She was always her own kind of 'evil' - in my opinion - and that was okay. But not like this; they've turned her into a real abomination now.

Saurfang should have been Warchief. He is a true Orc of honor, and a true warrior of the Horde. Guess we shouldn't have let a hallucinating troll on his death bed choose the next Warchief. Damn, For the Horde! But also, fuck Sylvanas!
