Warcrow the Wargame THE Review - is it actually fun?

At first I felt that factions are too generic fantasy factions but after getting familiar a bit with the lore I've found the world pleasantly unique. It's familiar but there are enough new concepts added to keep the setting fresh.

The starters are relatively generic, but I suspect they'll fan out as they get more releases. Ie. Embersig are more defensive than northern tribes who want to get stuck in and get bonuses as they receive damage.

Joe Rogers has been with the channel longer than *he's* been healthy :P Apart from speaking of oneself in the third person, it looks, as you say, like the BEGINNING. But a strong beginning. Not a half arsed bodge of rules, clearly been in development for a while. Also as you mentioned its nice to have a bit less grey grimderp, and actually have some nice 'good' factions than 'its all horrible and bleak' type settings. Also Scion Elves = best elves

I like the looks of many of the factions. And the fact that it is slightly between skirmish and wargame size is good. There's enough skirmishes on the market. Well, the timing is perfect. Adventures looks like a good stepping stone to Warcrow. The new edition of Infinity, N5, arrives later this year and will include an essentials range which will give you a slow grow of rules and minis into Infinity. Win!

For game play, it means that, within a narrative chain of games, your army composition and capabilities can be affected by the results of previous scenarios. Moment to moment game play impact will depend on whether you, as the player, choose to add RPG elements to your experience.

@@thedicegodswg Okay, that's a much more interesting way to play. Here's the next thought: how do you continue the narrative if you cannot play the same person or group of people? Or is that the culture the game will develop explicitly, playing the same people for a x period in time? (and thanks for the reply!)

@@genedean29 honestly, I don't know at this point. I think that will be partly down to your community, how you want to play etc. Crafting consistent narrative across games with different opponents is going to be a challenge, but I think it will also hinge on your community size. If you're running a league across multiple months, then the narrative could move based on the overall faction performance. So, if more Scions win (as they should) then the victory path of their narrative is used. Something like that. BUT really we need more clarity on what CB are giving us first, I think. And thank YOU for chatting, always good to swap ideas. :)

I am excited about the narrative structure for sure, it's what is missing I think directly from most skirmish games (either you do a Kill Team or you go full Mordheim). I'll need to rewatch your video on whether or not I should get the big rule book, so that way I know if it has the campaign rules.

@@genedean29 it has scenarios, not the campaign rules. CB has done campaign books for Infinity in 2nd edition, but that was another book released as the game was established. If you're really keen on narrative as a core idea, I'd actually suggest giving it 6 months. See how the game develops. Until all factions are out, I don't think we're going to see concrete direction from CB on how narrative will work long-term. That's a guess, but it makes sense. :)

I've always been drawn to fantasy more so than sci-fi (not to say that I hate sci-fi though), so was immediately interested in Warcrow when I saw it. The factions are obviously more or less the usual suspects but with enough difference to keep things interesting and unique. People need to be somewhat forgiving with any things that can be improved, it is a 1st edition as you mentioned. But that's also part of the appeal, to be here from the beginning. I like the 1 unit activation per turn, it should keep things flowing along nicely for both players. Looking forward to more Warcrow content on your channel.

A Song of Ice and Fire is my favorite rank and flank game, but I’ve been looking for a fantasy skirmish game comparable to Star Wars Legion. We did a separate review of the rulebook but, I would say this, if you want the story, lore and a look at all factions, it's a must buy. Ita a gorgeous book, well worth a read in it's own right.

There's a few videos out there covering the mechanics and we have a "how to play " series on the horizon, but... basically, you pick a spell, roll a willpower check, and if it works, it goes off. BUT if you want, you can buff the spell. If you do that, your opponent rolls dice against you. These can result in you building up tinge, think magical corruption. When your caster has tinge tokens, casting spells gets harder and more dangerous and can result in them exploding!

I did not enjoy the dice in Aristeia, but that could be due to other issues the game had. Here the implementation looks better, but it I would not know unless I actually tried it. It could be a dealbraker.

I don't think we need fantasy Infinity though. There's plenty of Infinity in here, but not so much that it's the same game. If you use the same order concept as Infinity, you need the ARO system to avoid that being too powerful. Drop the custom dice, and, let's be honest, it's going to be D20s or we're all going to complain... and boom, reskinned Infinity.

I don't know why they're keeping cavalry such a secret or at least not promoting it from the start. On one of the videos she mentioned there would be cavalry and we've at least seen some interesting mounts for orcs and Feudom that would help with those considering the units to be generic.

I does got me excited recently. I guess the aestetics mix of Arcane meets Dragon Age (at least in the concept art of it, which I've followed since Origins) made it for me.
