Actually one of my favorite hexagon turn based Strategy games. There's certain simplicity in there that gives a lot of replay value. Battles can be very tough, but no impossible. Unlike other games of the same kind have layers upon layers of gameplay gimmicks, magic upon magic, upgrade upon upgrade that feels like a lifetime to understand and is frustration when you loose a fight because you don't know all million magic combinations out the top of your head. In Gladius you have your units, their combat capability and some world map abilities. It's more about strategy and less about finding the correct meta combo.

True, my first game I played the imperial guard and got locked into a stalemate with the Spacemarines, however after unlocking the Heavy Teams I was able to push them back moving my men in lines

Hands down one of my favorite games of all time! AI can be hard, lots of strategic thinking, and almost always good. Not the best game ever and mechanics are not as deep as other games, but it is just fun what is there.

I recently ended a game with the necrons and they are so broken that the only issue I had with them is when the event of the rebel necrons appeared and the last survival event. Monoliths, Obelisks and Death Reapers will haunt my dreams and sleep for quite a while.

Currently playing it on steamdeck, great fun on the go. Looks also pretty good and the nature of turn based strategie means you don´t have to fiddle with the controls as there is no fast paced reaction required.

I think it mostly like a turn based RTS rather than a 4x. Its also fun to use mods to turn creeps off as a different form of the game. It provides good depth to strategic, operational and tactical decisionmaking.

"Virtually eliminated diplomacy" so yeah... pretty much lore accurate for 40k since there are only like three factions that get along with each other. Blood Angels and Necrons (Szarekh's dynasty specifically), Guilliman and the Ynnari, and The Imperium and Admech. So yeah... diplomacy is basically not cannon anyway.

They are already working on the successor but without the Warhammer 40k license, sadly. Its called Zephon and is due to release in 2024. I would prefer a Gladius 2 though.

Very good overview on Gladius. Same thing than you, at first I wasn't catch by Gladius and then... Not enough time to play it right now, but I'm sure I'll enjoy a future game. It has very good mecanism, it's simple but simplistic and with good DLC (I onw some of the with game on GOG). Thanks for this video !

As someone who is new to the game, the only criticism i have is that the normal amount of wildlife is almost impossible for the first attempt, like 3 kastellan robots spawning near you is absolutely devastating. Apart from that i have to say that the dlc policy is ridiculously anti consumer, i play paradox games and their dlc system is much more satisfying where i get new systems and things to do, with gladius the multi faction dlc (although cheaper) contain like 1 unit for each army. The reinforcement and firepower dlc are a complete rip off. The others idk. Otherwise this is a really fun game.

Having just spent an uncomfortable amount of money in retrospect re-buying the base game on a different store and then buying all the DLC with that game (since that store had the best version of the sale, or was still on sale when I went around to it), I'm glad to have this kind of content to get past potential buyer's remorse. I dropped the game a week or two after I bought it's base version initially, and I concluded that while I might get more enjoyment out of the game if I buy troop transport units, the fact of the matter is that I didn't like how the price of the "full" gameplay experience is the base game plus several DLCs, and I'll never get to the point where I've learned everything before a new DLC comes out and scrambles things again.

Just wish there was some entrenching, the regular Space Marines had some kind of Melee options since they have chainswords. I really enjoy the workshop scence though. Love games that allow mods..makes the game much more enjoyable I think to know you have free options to change it up. The DLC amount is a little crazy but, it supports the devs so that's cool. Just kinda gives paradox vibes sometimes do to the overwhelming amount of DLC. lol.

@@jaded-harper I would love to know of a game, where there are 9 distinct factions with very different playstyles. Because full games either have few distinct factions (Dawn of War, Warcraft 3, Starcraft) Or they have copy paste factions with very few differences (AOE, Heroes M&M, Rise of Nations). Dawn of War only had 4 factions, it went up to 7 after to expansions, and you couldn't play the other 5 with Dark Crusade in either skirmish of multiplayer, you had to own all 3. 30 bucks a pop for the games, were more than a decent prize, so that would still have been 90 bucks, and back then 90 bucks were a lot more than it is now. Base game have 4 factions, that played well and differently and had pretty decent rosters. Don't buy factions you don't want to play. I still haven't bought Mechanicus or Sororitas.

Endless Space 1 was copy paste factions, with values changed. I love Endless Space 2, but they only gave you 7 factions, with copy paste military units and only 3 factions (Vodyani, Riftborn and Unfallen) with noteable diversions from the basic 4x formula (and the unfallen is a stretch already). Lumeris, UE, Sophon and Cravers have gimmicks that are interesting and changes your strategy somewhat, but it is closer to AOE than it is Warcraft.

Its a great point about the AI. Total warhammer AI is so atrocious it almost ruins it for me. They are completely predictable and stupid, so they get some cheat codes for attrition and stuff and income so they can essentially turtle in base. Fighting them becomes a boring min-max meta grind. Honestly these days gaming companies could actually make much better AI. It's just cheaper to not do that. Why pay a software engineer to design an AI from the ground up, when you can just copypasta your 20 year old basic bolean script and slap some new textures on everything and sell it as a full priced game.

When you like that game play endless legend or when you like future more endless space 1 or 2 and maybe you are interested in Dungeon Stone Crawl Soup(it cost nothing really nothing) but it is very hard game i bet you can not beat the game in less than a year(plz give it a try, first few games i would use the wiki too play it), it is a turn base top down dungeon explorer game that is old school you have only 1 live after death you must start from the beginning, and the maps are every time random and the loot too.

You know it's funny you should say you refunded it and then rebought it and it clicked. I have had so many similar experiences with games where I rage quit, sometimes a refund happens or often enough just an uninstall, but I keep thinking about it! Now many habe the vanilla game, but which DLC is most recommendable and why? I read all faction DLCs are well made, so they are in principle recommendable, if you like the faction. Unfortunately I am not so good with Warhammer 40k universe and have a hard time to decide. Maybe I just play the base game for now and decide later at another sale.

Are you talking about the neutral ai? Because some of those units have spawners you need to take out. If you are talking other factions, you need to scout more

The hate the game gets around the DLC to me is really not relevant as I've nearly 400 hours at this stage and been happy to support them. And they have given the base game away for free numerous times.

Except that the Astra Militarum and Adeptus Astartes would usually be allies, and the added factions of Adeptus Mechanicus and Adeptus Sororitas would be allies, which is Diplomacy... Oh, wait. There IS Diplomacy in 40k! It just was ignored for the sake of the game! 40 Universe HAS diplomacy.

i love how you can pretty much ignore the enemy faction for most of the game , my space marine juggernaut clashed with a horde of orks , the ai is rather agressive with the city building so i had to eradicate several ork cities , got myself a chaplain that survived all the way to the endgame (i continued the ˝˝story˝˝ after beating the orks)
