Despite how awful the player in the first story was, what the dm did was actually pretty creative and sounded like a fun theme to mess with. Also, resurrection is a thing in cyberpunk, you just need a really good insurance plan. They use cloning and upload your memory from your cyberdeck into the cyberdeck of the clone. It only works if your teammates can recover your body but still, in night city cash is king and with enough of it anything is possible.

Seriously, “delusional TTRPG junkie who believes he’s a real life Paladin of CyberJesus and thinks his cybernetic abilities are divine miracles” sounds like it’d be hilarious to play. You just need a player who understands that is all just flavor and follows the actual mechanics of the CPR system. Broke my heart to hear how the DM really tried to work the problem player’s idea into the world just for the problem player to take a dump all over everything.

I actually liked the idea of Cyberpunk-"Paladin" from the first story in principle. Like, a guy with a strict code of chivalry/faith in the mostly morally bankrupt world of Cyberpunk RED could be much fun to roleplay. What doomed the concept was the player insisting to make it a fantasy-esque paladin instead of adapting the idea to a cyberpunk setting. I think that player would have been happier playing Shadowrun, where magic exists alongside classic cyberpunk stuff. If I remember correctly, there is even a magical tradition derived from christian faith. Anyway, it sounded very much like the player wanting to play D&D in the first place.

The way this reads sounds like a Justicar in Mass Effect: A faithful and unyielding servant of the Justicar Code which, honestly, could be adjusted for any kind of setting honestly, Cyberpunk included. Maybe no magic (depending on setting) but the definition of an extreme case of Lawful Neutral would work well if you got the right group to complement them.

So, a light-hearted counterpoint to the first story: my play style is usually to be a nice guy, so much so that my group joked that all of my characters had “Paladin” tattooed on their foreheads. Obviously not true but a cute inside joke. So one time we’re playing Shadowrun and the GM apparently forgot that fact for a moment because an NPC ran up, dropped to her knees, threw her arms around my character’s legs and cried, “By all you hold holy, you have to help me!”

Oh jeeze the 40k one, I had something similar happen in regards to the wanting sexual information on the character sheet, so I told the DM since the sheet wasn't completed I'd be redoing it, so I went from a Guardsman to a TechPriest, in the section for all that junk size and sexuality and other stuff, I put how the tech priest had nothing junk wise becouse the flesh is weak and had no sexual preference since that was a weakness of the flesh. (praise be the omnisire) I was tempted to put having a thing for toasters but decided not to, when our then DM tried the suspected erotica role play stuff, he found he could do nothing to my character as they had no junk, the oral option wasn't possible due to all the tech and mechanisms their and when he attempted to force stuff on our characters when we tried to avoid the erotica role play scenarios (which would leed to some of us walking away from the game), the DM didn't like how I had my tech priest over analyse what was happening and breaking it down into statistics and analysing what was happening in a detached cold machine like reasoning. Maybe that makes me a jerk or an ahole of a troll maybe, but do I feel bad for doing so...not one bit, if anything it still makes me chuckle thinking on it.

Cyberpunk Paladin: Not quite sure why DM went so far out of the way to accommodate this character concept into Cyberpunk Red, but indulging this player certainly did not pay off. It would have been 100% fair to simply say from the outset, "this is the game we're playing, this is the setting, and these are the character options. If this isn't the game you want to play, that's fair; you are free to find one that you do." I strongly suspect this player was just as big a proverbial turd in the party punchbowl during D&D as he proved to be in Cyberpunk Red, so his absence likely only improved every game at this table.
@StSubZero
@StSubZero Ай бұрын
Honestly that Paladin story. Read it on the subreddit and now I think I get what his goal was based on an experience I've had with an uncooperative player: A passive-aggressive effort to discourage the DM from changing systems. While a lot of RPG enthusiasts might love trying out new systems, you'll often get those players who only play 5e, because it's easy, they know it, and there's a lot of resources for it. But alas in his case, the Forever DM wanted to change gears and get some excitement. Quite frankly, that's pretty generous compared to asking someone else to DM -which I know I would have done if I needed a break- But rather than take the chance to explore the system, he got all fixated on the aspects he KNEW were not in Cyberpunk vs DND. Magic specifically. Not because magic is essential, but a poor argument to try to get the DM to go back to 5e without having to take up the DM mantle and without trying to break his comfort zone to let the DM have fun too. Only caring about himself in the end. I'd also blame the murderhobo antics on this attitude, not that such behavior is justified either way. Given he wasn't a problem up until now. Protip: TALK to your DM directly and talk things out and give new things a chance instead of acting like a baby. My first non-DND RPG was Starfinder and I loved that. Got my first Glory Story from it. DM purgative: I'm the one who runs the game, and I want to run this. Player purgative: I can choose to take it or leave it.

Sheesh. For the first story, I understand transitioning to a new TTRPG can have its akwardness Definitely learned that after trying to get my party into though the breach. But like... that guy was focusing exclusively on what he couldn't do in cyber punk as opposed to what new oppurtunities the setting gave him. Like the idea of a religeous fanatic with a cult following is a really cool cyberpunk character, but all he could focus on was the lack of magic, instead of how awesome cybernetics and guns are.
@AvatAR42420
@AvatAR42420 Ай бұрын
The Paladin in the first story is the classic example of a selfish player. The rest of the group wants to play Cyberpunk Red, a modern Sci-fi game typically with greyish and complex morality. The paladin player wants to play D&D with a paladin who can smite unambiguous evil with little to no consequences. The table had more patience for his antics than most, but I think he probably would have been a problem at the D&D table too if the game included any sort of moral grey where the bad guys were anything more than targets for his "divine wrath". I don't think the problem player would have been good even if he was playing D&D, which is what he obviously wanted to play because it would not fix his selfish, single player mentality. No outside force can fix these type of players. They need to wise up, grow out of it, and develop self awareness. The group can only give their reasons for kicking them, kick them and move on. While I applaud the DM's creativity to try and make the problem player's concept work, he really should have been for firm that they were playing Cyberpunk, not D&D and if he didn't like that, he could leave.

It definitely could've been a cool character if it wasn't played by a clown. A zealot of a man utterly consumed by dogmatic fervor. A burning hate for night city and its sin. He believes the only cure for the city is to burn it to the ground. Give him red cyber eyes or red shades to symbolize that he's literally seeing red. Ask the DM to help your character go cyberpsycho. Give the party signs that he needs to be saved from his own demons. Have an open ended arc with finally taking off the shades. The world can be a disgusting place but the world but there's still beauty. The world created him and his faith, it's worth saving. Or have his anger consume him and go cyber psycho. The red shades never come off they now symbolize the demonic monster he's become. Mankind will always choose to bite the apple, they're not worth saving. Off everyone and let God sort them out. Again that wouldn't be possible with that player. Maybe someone else can run with the concept though and give it righteous Justice

Story #! - The DM's approach, of making Paladin into a Rockerboy with a few alterations, sounded like a good idea. Unfortunately, Paladin only used it as a license to murderhobo. Seems to me like the DM took his time to deal with the problem, but visiting actual CONSEQUENCES on Paladin was the right way to go. Story #2 - Unreasonable? Imo, no. I'd take this up with the DM, mainly. Story #3 - Yeah, the DM's Character Sheet "addition", and his pressure to fill that part out, was a Great Big Red Flag. The reaction of the others to the entry ..... I'd have walked at that point, certainly.

Cyberpunk does have zealous groups but they don't fit what he's looking for. There's traveling monks that fit his desires for faith but they're completely against guns, all cyberware and violence. There are factions that are straight cults with how zealous they are, like the Maelstrom but they're overall faithless and instead worship body augmentation. But in the end the real problem Paladin had was trying to force a purely sci-fi game into being a high magic fantasy.

Cyberpunk doesn't even have wizards, how are people going to fit a knight running on god magic into the mix. At best you would be able to run someone who was religious and used cybernetic implants to fight as a knight of a holy order. Just like real life the only benefit to religion in cyberpunk is mental health and motivation to be a better person. If he wants magic he can play Shadowrun.

Don't take this next part as me criticizing the DM here, but if that guy wanted to implement more D&D stuff into his character, the first item on that list should've been a broken oath because murderhoboing when not at war would be a broken oath for ANY paladin. Also that ending, forgive me that guy but who elected you as the fun police? Either take the L and learn how to play Cyberpunk or go cry in the corner. Story 2: *Taps microphone* Hello? Hello? This thing on? Earth to DM, THE HECK ARE YOU DOING?! Story 3 : To start off, 19:09 apply cold water to burned area. Second off, unless you're playing FATAL, A) why are you playing FATAL? and B) no game should have it be a thing that sexual content is an actual mechanic, that's creepy and gross. Here, let me put into perspective where this group's collective life is going if they keep trying to harness the Macho Chad Energy like they did here, imagine if OP were a girl, yeah, that's all you need to know that these guys are gonna wind up alone and unloved in a jail cell. Ok for story one the DM could have totally worked something out with the problem player. I mean i dont care what time of history you're living in there will always be fanatical religious belivers so he could of worked something into the story. Off the top of me head they could make it into a comical character who worships a god why believes he has been given divine powers to punish people on gods behalf, but in reality his poweres are just cybernetic enhancments; but nobody can convice him otherwise and to him, they are purely magcial poweres, while everyone around him clearly sees that its just enhancements. He could cast "Thunderous Smite" and the dm can describe it as a taser shooting from his arm, but to the player caracter hes so hyped up on god-worsiping-drugs that he literally believes that lightning is coming out from his hand. Hope that makes sence. But yeah, if the DM and Player could have made more effort with eachother, they could have both gotten what they wanted, I think.

"Magic doesn't really fit into the cyberpunk setting". Doge, ol' boy - have you ever heard of Shadowrun? (and yes, you CAN play a Paladin in Shadowrun - problem is, he won't last long unless he's a Physical Adept. To clarify better: Physical Adepts are magic users just like normal mages, but they direct their magic INWARDS, therefore becoming able to do stuf you'd expect of people like Captain America or Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star)

Probably the difference between Cyberpunk the universe and Cyberpunk the genre.

Story 2 feels like a lot of details are being left out, like maybe op said or did some stuff that would make them look bad, so they're glossing over those parts to talk about what they didn't like. It's a very weird situation going by just what op wrote.
