The next part of a small Imperial Fists Warhammer 40k army I'm working on, and the perfect excuse to do a painting tutorial for the BallistusDreadnought from the Leviathan set.

Thank you. Finished filming some today, will be out next week, not sure if it will be the first video next week yet though, so you may have to wait until next weekend 🙂.

Great video. We didn't have airbrushing when i painted,in the 80's. So this level of painting is amazing to me.

Thank you. Things have changed so much haven’t they, I think I’d hate to have to paint things like this (and larger) with mostly a brush.

Very nice paint job. What airbrush do you use and how long did it take to learn the ins and outs? I haven’t used an airbrush before but I know I found the primer cans of great help rather than trying to brush a primer on. The airbrush does look very good at applying a zenithal primer and also larger surface areas…appears to make the process much quicker and definitely gives an effect that would be more difficult to achieve with just the brush

Thank you. I use an Harder & Steenbeck Infinity 2 in 1, it’s not cheap and definitively not the one I started with. The market has changed quite a lot since I started airbrushing, and the quality of some of the cheaper brushes has improved. For example if you wanted a brush to prime, put down zenithal highlights, maybe even a base layer, then you could potentially manage with a cheaper option. I found that as I got into it I wanted to upgrade pretty quickly, and while the outlay isn’t cheap, the amount of time I save, and quality/ease of some techniques more than pays off.

@@MiniatureRealms They do look like they cost a little bit…about £200? Prices look like they vary a little between suppliers and there are a few models with similar-ish names. Possibly I would try a cheaper one first and work my way up. Are these designed for the hobby industry or are they relatively general in scope as far as users of airbrushes goes? I know airbrushes were often used in the sign industry although that has largely changed to vinyl these days since nearly nothing gets done by hand anymore

Yes around the £200 mark for this one, it can swap between two different size needles that are fairly useful/common in miniature painting (though like many I tend to only use the larger). These are very much designed with miniature painters in mind, there’s a series of signature editions partnered with well know painters. A good place to start is the starter sets you find on eBay or Amazon, they will have a compressor, and brush (and usually some other bits). Just make air the airbrush is ‘dual action’ and ‘gravity fed’. Play around with it, see how you get on, then get a better brush after. It’s a bit like anything really, the higher quality brushes I find are easier to use and a nicer experience, and I expect some people are put off by the cheap airbrush they start with, but it’s a big risk to go big right off.

@@MiniatureRealms thanks Stu for the great advice. I suppose it is like lots of stuff you get what you pay for…but it is a fair investment nonetheless. Kind of similar in price to a fair sized boxed set of minis (like Leviathan). I might look at a cheaper one first and go into it with lower expectations from a quality point of view and also of course because I have never used one before. The first thing I would try using it for would be priming and build up from there. By the way I saw you in Warlord’s newsletter about their open day, it must have been a fun day. You are very lucky that you live in the UK which is home to a great number of hobby companies. We do have some local producers here in Australia but it isn’t the same…that plus the fact many companies love to charge Aussies about 150% of the UK price and then work out the exchange rate. I quite like dealing with companies such as Perry Miniatures that just have one price for all customers with everyone just buying them in £. Saying that of course I feel lucky enough about living here and we are used to what we call the Australia Tax…but it doesn’t mean we have to like it lol

No problem, happy to help, one day I’ll get around to doing a video on it, but there’s plenty of good ones already. I do feel for you price wise, not sure why it is always, I know for the larger companies who ship to warehouses first and use freight, I think that’s a lot of it. Definitely a bit cheaper when you can buy direct in sterling and pay postage. It is great being close to Notts though, I’m only a couple of hours away and wish I was closer, I’d love to use Warhammer World and Warlord HQ to play games more. I probably wouldn’t take much persuading to live in your part of the world though.
