Oof, right in the nostalgia. I remember the siege rules from the 6th ed rulebook. That watchtower on the rock is spectacular - the grass and flowers really brought it to life! What about removable themed tower toppers to help alter the fortress for different armies rather than making separate dedicated wall sections? For example, open sided wooden structures with peaked rooves (in the same colours as the doors you've done here) with Bretonian pennants or banners flying from the tops. Archers can still shoot out the side. Or for Empire you could do weapons racks full of muskets or barrels of powder and shot for defending cannon (with attached flagpoles or empire markings on boxes and barrels). Would keep things modular.

I filled my Fortress wall segments with two wooden planks each (tight from side to side) as they use to get concave by time. It also adds more weight to them so they are more stable on the gaming board.

Somehow I got the tower from this set, but never the full fortress. I do remember playing matches at the GW store with this and thinking it was great!

I think a lot of people seem to have ended up with just a tower, selling them separately probably tempted quite a few people.

Glorious, simply glorious!!! One of the reasons I'm so excited for the Old World is that back in 2012 I did a massive purchase at my local hobby store of Warhammer 8th Edition stuff, just before most of it was discontinued forever. I got the Mighty Fortress, the Battle Board, Skullvane Manse, trees, walls, and a whole host of plastic boxed sets from 7th/8th Edition, including several battalion boxes which are darn near impossible to find now sealed, and when you do see them on Ebay they are mega-expensive. In 2017 I built and painted the fortress and battleboard, built all the terrain, and built and primed five of the armies, about 500 models which are now all sitting in transport cases waiting to be painted! I also did what you did with Ebay. After getting the fortress, I supplemented it with extra towers and wall sections so I can also do a city wall type thing across a table. So I'm fully prepared for Old World, just have to do the rebasing to the new sizes and get on with painting!!

@@MiniatureRealms The only thing I have from that era that I can consider a true relic or antique is a copy of the OLD, OLD styrofoam Mighty Fortress from 1988! The one that came in the giant rectangular black box and had brown plastic doors, siege ladders, etc. We're talking Warhammer 2nd/3rd Edition era. I got in from Ebay a couple years back for about $175 and the box was in amazingly good condition for being over 30 years old. If you have happen to have a copy of White Dwarf #101, May 1988 there's an article about it in there...

Looking GOOD! (I'm glad to learn that I was not the only young fella to long for A Mighty Fortress, back in the day! LOL!) If, in the future, you add some walls & additional towers, you might want to maytbe show some that have fallen or been breached! (It's also a great way to use up all the bits & bobs from any modifications that may otherwise go to waste to boot!) This would enable you to show a successful tunnel collapse by the foe.. A battering ram's result or a critical hit by a catapult/trebuchet!! If nothing else, you can have an abandoned castle on the tabletop, with a good reason as to why it was abandoned in the first place! Well Done!

That castle looks fantastic. I remember when the plastic castle was released. At the time GW stores has a promotion where if you purchased set sections for an army they would give you pieces of the castle for free. I’ve got the main gateway wall section as a result but unfortunately didn’t get to have any of the other parts. The store I had access to was only small and stock was quite limited at times and so being able to buy the units required to get the promotion was a challenge. This was of course back in the days of metal so it was a lot of blister packs of minis to make up each unit, three troops at a time

@@MiniatureRealms Very true. GW at a casual glance seems to take their customers a lot more for granted these days which is slightly odd because there’s more competition now than there was back then. I actually wish that I valued that competition a bit more as I have largely stuck with GW products for quite a few years now. However I have in the last couple of years been getting a few extra minis from elsewhere and the quality can be very good.

Yeah it’s an odd one, the market is so much larger now with even more competition. Though at the same time they have grown even more, I guess they feel they don’t need to do that kind of sales marketing. The discount and deals are primarily through third party sellers I suppose.

@@MiniatureRealms I find it a little bizarre that 3rd party suppliers are given the opportunity to offer discounts. I suppose that is a reflection of the modern times post internet. Years ago I can’t recall getting any kind of discount at local games shops and you either could afford to buy it at the offered price or not. Back then the very best place you could go was direct to a GW store as they had the biggest range at identical prices. These days sadly it is the opposite from a price point of view.

I think it’s just a reflection on changes in retail in general. In the past RRP seemed to be followed more closely (at least until something was reduced to clear), but online has changed the market, competition forces the kind of discounts we see.

Middle Earth back when it still was the LotR battle game had cool siege rules. Might be fun adapting some of that ToW where that's possible (building damage for instance). Overall I feel like sieges don't work for rank and file that well though (same for boat battles).

I gotta tell ya, your paint jobs you've done in all the Old World tutorials so far are some of the best work I've ever seen on Warhammer fantasy minis.. Not even kidding man. You've got the Contrast/Speedpaint system mastered into nothing short of a professional level/studio level quality. It's fantastic.

These released right as I was getting into the hobby, I've always wanted one! It would still be a few years before I got into fantasy (with 6th ed), but WD224 was right around the time I started borrowing those magazines from a classmate and got stuck into 40k. I absolutely loved the idea of doing sieges, I don't know why they captured me so much more than regular games but the same thing happened with LotR when Two Towers introduced siege rules. I don't have room to store these things, so I'd better stay off ebay, but I love the glow up you're done on these.

i bought the hard foam/polystyrene version off ebay a few years ago and just this year painted it up, i followed tabletop world's way of painting it however i think i'll revisit it now and copy your weathering techniques with the sewer and grime contrast paints too.....great vid as always..

Why not use polystyrene cement and clamps or rubber bands to fit those gapped bits? You also could also have used hot water or a heat gun to correct that warping.

If I was building fresh I’d have definitely used that method. It was mostly because it was already built that I didn’t, it was glued in a way that it was pushing the parts apart, but of a pain. So I could have tried to take it apart again and risk damage, or fill the gaps. I did use hot water to part correct the warping, wasn’t too bad in the end. Thank you though.

I worked in the studio for 18 months painting and model making and mostly for adverts for White Dwarf from 1987-89. First was on a freelance basis and then full time. I was part of the 'Eavy Metal Team which consisted of Me, Mike MC Vey, Colin Dixon, Sid and to some extent Dave Andrews. Later Tim Prow joined the team. Our studio boss was John Blanche and we were mostly trusted to just get on with painting but did work from briefs. It was a bit like herding cats at times but we worked on a lot of different projects and there was a good vibe. Mostly we could get hold of a copy of the project we had worked on but the Mighty Fortress in polystyrene was a limited run and I was promised one but they sold out fairly quickly and I never did get one. My best memory from that period was painting the first Harlequin miniatures for the back of the box and they became very big sellers. I worked on the first Titans, Space Hulk, the Genestealers, Imperial Guard when the first plastics were developed, Space Wolves were the Space Marine force I was building but never finished it and mostly the first plastic beakies. I left in mid 1989 to go back to archaeology which I was trained in. They were good days and fond memories

The Harlequins were painted as overtime on a very long Bank Holiday weekend and I took the set home to paint and was challenged I could not have it done by the Tuesday...I hardly slept and loads of coffee but I won the challenge much to everyone's shock. Looking back each day was different and it was a challenge at times with a limited palate as the paint range back then was very limited. The order from above was things had to be bright and no browns...or at least limited tones due to the photographic process at the time. I was never a fan of the pastel shades for some of the Chaos stuff that was the order of the day and I tried to avoid painting them and focused on Khorne and Nurgle. Many of the miniatures were painted a month before the next White Dwarf but sometimes things were sprung on us and a range we nothing about landed on the main table normally mid week and the deadline was the Friday. I was guilty of the bright reds on the Khorne stuff and the Ork in red power armour. We also painted the Marauder Miniatures range but had to keep it quiet at the time and In painted most of the Dwarves, Chaos Dwarves and Dark Elves. John Blanche was a superb manager and I felt sorry for him at times with all of the crazy antics but it was a talented crew and a bit of chaos and anarchy got us through each week and lots of good natured banter. The studio was small, often a sea of chemicals from the spray booth for car body primer and we drank massive amounts of coffee. They were good days

Nice work! A couple of years back, I picked up the Tabletop World gatehouse, walls and towers and have really enjoyed playing sieges with them. Kings of War works especially well for those epic battles with hundreds of models, although I'm also curious to see what Old World will bring.

great job and airbrush mastering is at pro level, many many compliments. The overall effect is amazing. I take it as an inspiration to go on with my castle project. Two questions: which ratio do you thin the contrast paint to use it for weathering? Do you thin with water?

well neat stuff like it and well sorrry to say welll as old birday game yes back in day i have one the old stiring foam mighty fotress and willl like to got one you got to add to walls and gates and do it bigger but the GW put thews buches on OUT SIDE you put them on out side thats bad thing you put as menny in sid but not out why you put latters on em and what whant to KEEP OUT will get in ok not going on with that the model looks great you did great job on it and now i got do a bad thing and SUB to youz LOL ho haven ues ed my fort that much just last 17 times have played WHFB in long time and may be if old world come out will see as do new wil see
