Very good demonstration that: - It's all in the song, production and playing - The Warm Audio gear is more than capable to achieve excellent sounds - A skilled mix engineer can get this sounding great, fast; really well done. I was already convinced about Warm Audio gear, but after this, I am investing in 3 412 units to fill out my preamps as I just sold my LFAC.

When you use parallel compression, how do you normally set your attack and release on your compressor? Does that setting remain the same regardless of the instrument when you use parallel compression, or do you have to tailor that parallel compression attack and release to each specific instrument?

Robert Simpson thanks for watching Robert! As for parallel compression, it’s specific to the instruments. There are 3 parallel tracks in this song I think. 1) drums- I typically like 1176 style compression. Somewhere between the slowest attack (which is fully counter-clockwise) to around 9 o’clock. An 1176 is so fast that even slow attack is fast. 800 microseconds I think!!! Fastest release because the main thing I’m trying to accomplish is the added sustain. 2) vocals - I like 1176s here too. Attack between 1 o’clock and down near it’s fastest setting fully clockwise. Release is typically fastest or slowed slightly to around 3 o’clock. 3) band (non drums) - I really like neve 2254 or 33609 styles. They have a fixed attack. I think it’s about 5ms on the 2254. Release is often the 400ms setting. Although some advise not to use auto release settings on parallel busses, the 2254 seems to be useful to me in auto release. It doesn’t seem to do the wild “swings” that some other units may.

@@InTheMixJoeCarrell thanks for the reply! So with your drum parallel compression, you are trying to add sustain.... with your vocal parallel compression, are you trying to tame the vocal transients and smooth out the vocal track (kind of adding some body)? I know of the "rear buss" parallel compression technique, in which the band is compressed. What kind if sound are you trying to accomplish with parallel compression on that part of the mix? Thanks again for the reply!

Robert Simpson yeah for drums it’s mostly about the sustain. For vocals and all other instruments really just a way to get more consistent volume and size without compressing heavily enough at any one stage to have a negative impact on the sound. In most forms of music, I’m not a big fan of the heavy single stage compression sound. I think our ears are naturally drawn to stuff that sounds big but still moves a bit and is musical. For me, other than a few extreme genres, the every note the same volume thing is boring and even fatiguing.

@@InTheMixJoeCarrell agreed! Thanks a bunch for talking shop and answering all of my long-winded questions! I really enjoy your mixes, and I am hoping to continue honing mine! By the way, I am huge Warm Audio fan! I recently bought one WA-47 Jr and one WA-14. They are beautiful sounding mics!! It is almost too easy to sound good with them!
