I do. Especially with compressors. Like Dave teaches compressors are sometimes a way to eq. Harware , in my experience , tend to bring things out in a more clear way. Everyting is subjective. The important thing is learn how the tools work and remember to think about why your using them. It's art,it's fun, but it's a super expensive hobby.

I have recently got back into making music. I am more into producing now. I like hardware compared to software in every comparison. Obviously, most hardware can be cost prohibitive but I have got Steam Audio gear to replace the more expensive stuff. As I just did demos for my band on Sonar 20 years ago, I have had to relearn some stuff and learn new things. I did the course Uncle Dave offered mixing Dec Leopard and bought a couple of his courses. That helped a lot. Then I replaced the plugins used with hardware. What a difference.
@MixingMusicAnalogАй бұрын
The STAM stuff is really great for sure! Thanks for picking up the courses! The training is way more important than the tools you use (hardware vs plugins).
@terry2315Ай бұрын
@@MixingMusicAnalog Yes it is. Knowing how to use the tools is the most important. That's why I am taking the courses. Recording demos for my band 20 years ago we just made it sound the best by laying great tracks. Being able to polish tracks and them put it all together as a new picture is very fun. Thanks again.

Hardware all the way...after almost 40 years recording,mixing my band and others with analog equipment and taking a few year break from music and the past year and a half learning how to record on the computer and about plugins ,I always felt my recordings/mixes were missing something with this computer recording. I learned from watching your comparisons with hardware and plugins was about the 3D thing,I never really thought of that but that is what is missing...thanks Dave

Snare sounds like a completely different sample! But I’ve noticed that the release time on the snare was medium with the plugin and with hardware more on the faster side

I was trying to get the release to react the same so the settings were different. I said that in the video

I did not have to strain my EARS to here the difference should be the case if these plug-in developers are saying it’s like the hardware lol… the plug-in isn’t even close to hardware. Thanks for the review.👍

This is great but it all depends on what sound you’re going for. Just my opinion. If I’m going to pay $900 more it better sound good or better. I have a hybrid setup and at he end of the day the average listener could care less what you used . I do know this ,it better sound good whatever it is you’re using. Great work Dave!
@MixingMusicAnalog2 ай бұрын
I hear you and you're right, the average listener could care less and cant tell the difference and I have made that point on this channel 10 billion times. :) but I dont think thats the point because if thats the way people think then sell aLL of your gear, all your 3rd party plugins and just use your stock plugins. In the end, if you have a great recording and song that's all you REALLY need right? Well, NOT ME! There is no fun in that, that's for sure.
@PurpleMusicProductions2 ай бұрын
@@MixingMusicAnalogExactly! I love that clap back because I am so sick of people using that line of reasoning. That is like a painter saying well that is no need to perfect my brush strokes because the average viewer will not care or notice the difference. Said no great artist ever.

Thank you Dave! I own a Warm Audio but, believe or not, never tried on a snare… that will be my tomorrow homework 😅 Anyway I am very happy about the hardware unit, mostly because it’s a very good piece of gear for a honest price
@MixingMusicAnalog2 ай бұрын
I was shocked how it sounded on snare
@JorgeEgrejasFrancisco2 ай бұрын
I do agree with you. Hardware is always better, with more depth, more natural, less squashed, more harmonic content specially in the low frequencies of each element. It seems that the hardware allows some useful variations in frequencies volumes while maintaining the compression goal. That’s why I ordered some time ago a true TubeTech CL1B 👍
@MixingMusicAnalog2 ай бұрын
I would love to try a real CL1B, just because I am curious
@JorgeEgrejasFrancisco2 ай бұрын
@@MixingMusicAnalog I looked at all the YT comparisons I found, namely one from Produce Like a Pro (Warren Huart) where I observed an enormous difference between the Tube-Tech CL1B and the Warm Audio WA-1B in favor of the former one (even Warren advising that WA would be a very good buy, I feel the TT, if you can afford it, really deserves to be the choice: its depth, width and frequencies clarity is, at least for me, by far superior).
@michaelgroom70602 ай бұрын
Dave. I always enjoy your videos. I have the softube collection and its fine but it would never beat the hardware. At this point in time i feel despite the adavances in plugins you will never beat the electrics in the hardware unit. Its really a matter of cost to most people.

They are all just tools. Use whatever tools you like. If you have good engineering skills, you'll have good mixes.
@peacevalleyaudio54962 ай бұрын
Room looks great Dave!. That's a hell of a rack you got going on behind you. Do you ever feel like it's too far away from your listening position? I have the Tube Tec plugin. I love it on snares. The Plugin sounds so much better. Maybe a little to compressed for my ears, but just tweak the release a little maybe.

Original> Warm> Kiive> Softube/UAD for my money. The 1B original is not an overly colored unit. Its actually very pretty, and subtly opens up the upper midrange. Its also incredibly fast (faster than the Warm) and transparent; this makes it really well suited to vocals. There is also quite a big difference between newer CL1Bs and Older ones…the newer ones are way way grabbier and pumpier on transients, older ones smoother

This plugin has attack and release curves, that do not fit the hardware. We could try faster attack. The hardware has a hell of a job with snares, and what the engineer did to make it work, is hard to emulate. First of all, when it increases gain, some parasitic capacitor comes into play, and makes the sound darker. Some hints to those who don't have the hardware: There are better compressors, even in the 4000G channel strip, or Lindell channel X. Try the Townhouse, it sounds darker from the beginning. Via the mix knob you can mitigate that a bit for the attack. You could do a mult and use Transient Designer and some EQ to add in some darker release phase. Or use 2 DAW tracks with same comp + same EQ both, then try different release times, and switch both EQs to resonant hipass, like 130Hz + 290 Hz, should have freq and resonance knobs like a Moog filter. Comp comes after EQ. With this you can fine-tune the body tones and their lengths.

@@MixingMusicAnalog lol, I know, I saw your UA vid but as touchy as it is it really does the job for me with creating distance in the mix ….i use it with attack set to fast and release set to slow….its really good at that one thing….the more release I give it the further it pushes back …..but totally get why you would dislike the UA version….it just does that one thing very well for me

The plugin was not even close. The hardware not only added depth, but a subtle sparkle/sheen on the top end and cleared up the low mids and bottom end. On the snare it added more sustain. On the vocals the plugin added harshness and plosives while the hardware not only tamed but smoothed it out. The plugin was overall flat sounding and I hated it every time you switched to it.
