I does have an incredible sound! No doubt- but WAUV! shit these old machines pollute! Its quite disgusting.... 2stroke is ANCIENT at this point and extremally dirty and un-healthy. Its gonna get exciting that many new US trains are getting the Siemens with a 4 stroke 95l quad turbo Cummings. You cant even see the smoke comming out of those and they have 4400 HP.

Sorry for the late response. I believe that sound is caused by the turbocharger momentarily stalling.

It's turbo surge, or 'turbo bark'. Most common cause is a plugged air filter.

This guy is pumping up air! EDIT: He's got major turbo or overrun clutch issues. That turbo is having difficulty keeping up properly, hence the belching black exhaust at some points.
@silicon212
@silicon212 4 жыл бұрын
It probably has a plugged air intake filter. That will also cause a surge condition, leading to the 'bark'.

It also can happen when you take the engine up too quick before it’s warmed up. The governor hunts and the turbo burps because the engine is too cold to be revved that high yet.

@TestECull

They last forever, make plenty of power, are exceptionally reliable, and don't require all that much upkeep. I'm pretty sure that earns them the right to carry a bit of heft. Besides, that weight just means more tractive effort.

Seems like a somewhat unhappy engine! The "barking" noise is from the turbocharger clutch, it is worn out/failing. I'm guessing the black smoke is caused by the turbocharger not running at the proper speed, hence starving the engine of air slightly.
@silicon212
@silicon212 8 жыл бұрын
It's probably surge due to a plugged air filter.
@jimolsen8632
@jimolsen8632 6 жыл бұрын
You're right; it's pretty hard to tell by just watching a Video and listening as the Engine is Notched Up. First thing I would do would be to check the Turbo Screen to see if it is plugged. When the Engine goes to Notch 8 and drops off the Clutch, if the Turbo Screen is plugged it can Burp like that. If you rev the Engine up using the Lay shaft, you can carefully get into the RPM range where the Clutch comes in and out and a Clutch failure is proven. Good catch, the Locomotive Tech probably caught it too and called it in so it can swapped out and come to the Shop.
@amessman
@amessman 4 жыл бұрын
Last comment was 2 years ago but whatever, Jim kinda explained it, I've heard the turbos are clutch driven till notch 5-6, then they run like a normal turbo, sometimes the clutch gets stuck where it doesn't disengage properly, causing that smoking, as the turbo can't spin up to the proper speed, can't deliver enough air, and the engine runs rich.

@@amessman just wanna say its nice to see comments from people who actually know how these engines work (and clearly have experience working on them) versus the usual train fans and their commentary. Thanks for that, even if it was a 2 year bump.

@tylersteffen200

The Barking is more likely caused by a cylinder not hitting the way it should (misfire). When Diesels are cold its very hard for them to combust sometimes, when you hear the bark you see black smoke come out of the stack, Thats unburnt fuel going through the exhaust side of the turbo and exiting the exhaust stack.
@silicon212
@silicon212 4 жыл бұрын
@@tylersteffen200 Unburnt diesel is a whitish-gray color. That's what you see when a cold diesel is started up - the cloud, or 'clag' as referred to on the other side of the pond, is pure unburnt diesel. The black is diesel that is improperly combusted, usually due to a fuel rich condition where not enough oxygen for the burn is available, resulting in the formation of carbon soot. The turbo can surge if it has an issue with a bearing, or it can surge if it doesn't have enough intake air on the impeller side. Either cause results in the same outcome - the surge, or bark followed by black smoke due to a momentary fuel rich condition.
@tylersteffen200

5:01 Where is that high pitch sound coming from ?
@silicon212
@silicon212 4 жыл бұрын
that is the clutch coupled turbocharger on the EMD 645 engine. You hear it at low RPM at a sustained note for a given RPM, because it's a two stroke diesel engine and needs to have charged air to run. At speeds below the 6th power setting (notch), exhaust gas velocity and heat alone is not sufficient to run the turbo, so the compressor/impeller is run off of the camshafts, at an increased speed through gearing, via an overrun clutch. When the exhaust pressure is high enough to run the turbo, the impeller decouples and runs off of the turbine in the exhaust as a true turbocharger.
