Not really. I have a Fender 1985 Power P/J bass. I love it. Best bass ever. You get the best of both worlds. Warmoth forgot about the P/Js.

The '72 pickguard is similar to the '72 Telecaster bass but not exact. The Tele bass featured a wide range humbucker mounted close to the neck, which requires headstock truss rod adjustment. The Tele pickguard is wider around the wide range pickup than the Warmoth pickguard as shown, which appears to be styled to compliment Precision pickups in the usual location.

Great explanation. I'll add that the original Fender tele basses including the '72 also had the square neck heal instead of the standard rounded heal.

I believe the 72 Pbass is based on the "Telecaster bass" that usually has the large Wide Range humbucker under pocket the neck only (no J or P pickups). Also it usually has the Telecaster bass headstock. Squier released a model in the early 2000s (2007-2012 ish) called the "Vintage Modified Precision Bass TB".

The 72 this was based on is the 72 telecaster bass, except it SHOULD be slab without the forearm and tummy contours. These basses had a big humbucker up by the neck. No middle p split or single coil pickup.

Fender made the Telecaster Bass from 68-79. It was a throwback to the '51 P Bass and from 68-71 it used the chrome two hole control plate that was used on the early '51-'57.. In '72 Fender changed to a humbucker bass pickup like the Seth Lover buckers in the late Tele Thinlines. Your Warmouth pickguard is similar to the '72 Telecaster Bass in shape, but is thinner on the top bout and is narrower through the middle, but it does have the unique curves of the '72 Tele Base in the control area. It doesn't look like the Telecaster bass Humbucker route would work with that pickguard. The other difference is with the number of holes in the pickguard, The Telecaster Bass had a single volume and tone pot with the jack in the side of the body. Most customers would probably opt for any other pickup arrangement than the single humbucker and most would prefer the jack on the pickguard. I think your '72 P Bass covers those bases quite well Page 49 of the book "The Fender Bass" by Rowman and Littlefield covers the introduction of the Telecaster Bass and the changes Fender made in 1972.

Excellent video and great explanation on the bass body's. I several warmoth builds including one with the 72 p body, but I cut my own pickguard and it only covers the control panel so it looks sort of like a stingray and I have the ashtray covers for the bridge and the pickup.

I love these videos! Please do them for all models, at least the ones with many variations 😊 They do however leave me with so many questions 😅 How come you don't offer the non-vintage 5-string (or any 5-string models, for that matter) chambered? In terms of weight reduction the chambering seems even more useful for basses that will inevitably be bigger and heavier that a 4-string anyway. For me, the lack of a chambered option for the Deluxe 5 P or J is probably the biggest thing that's kept me from ordering one so far. I'm also curious as to why you only offer the Deluxe 5 P rear routed (and as a result don't offer a pickguard for it). I've been searching for reference picture today, and from this (admittedly not very exhausting) search pretty much all examples of Fender 5-string P basses I've found have been top routed with a pickguard, so I can't imagine it would be a licensing thing, right. I would love to one day build a chambered, top routed, 5-string P-bass, with a pickguard 😊 Speaking of pickguards, how come you don't offer the truss rod cutout on other pickguards, even as an option? It such a useful feature, and it would be nice to not have to do it myself, since I'm sure that you guys would get a better result than I can.

You absolutely need top-routed deluxe 5 p-bass body and pickguard for it. Also 3+2 p-bass pickup routing can be good option. Keep-on pluckin’. :)

I've seen the "72 pickguard" mostly on Tele-Style P-basses. If you look at any Cake video, their bass player is rocking a bass with that pickguard, and a Humbucker in the '51 OG position.

Very nice! Like you, I have never seen your "72 P-Bass" style in a Fender product. it is reminiscent of what were called "Telecaster" basses (by Fender) which were put out in the late-60's-70's and resembled the '51 P-Bass. I am surprised you don't offer (or maybe just mention) a P-J option, with a route for a jazz bass pickup. I'd have to bet that your catalog offers that option.

Cool with some bass coverage! Would a Warmoth take on a Rickenbacker 4000 series bass be possible? Maybe with an offset waist and a slightly different pickguard shape or something like that (kind of like the rickenbacker-inspired Jackson or Harley Benton models)
@mysteryshrimp5 күн бұрын
Rick is a little more protective of their intellectual property than. Fender or Gibson. It's hard to get anything Ricky-like from this continent.
@wilhelmtheconquerer62145 күн бұрын
@mysteryshrimp the Jackson is different enough to be allowed, same seems to be true for the Harley Benton. Warmoth could even do the old Ibanez Roadstar shape from the 80's, since that had the Ricky-type of squared-off horns. Give that a Rick-type pickguard and it's a home run

The body is only available in rear rout, so no need. I don't think it's ever even been programmed as a top rout.

Semi-unrelated question (it's about a bass🙂): I'm looking at BassVI bodies on the Warmoth site and I'm noticing that they're different from the Fender/Squier bodies. The Fender design has a distinct shape (which has been reproduced by at least one third-party company, Thomann/Harley Benton, I think) whereas the Warmoth one on the site looks a lot more like a standard offset body shape. Is that a quirk of the rendering on the site or are the bodies really completely different shapes? Not a complaint, I'm just looking to put together a metallic/frost purple BassVI now that I can't get one of the limited edition Squier ones and I'm considering my options. The Fender body is distinct but kind of ugly in my opinion anyway, so it wouldn't exactly be a huge drag if I ended up with a big purple baritone Jag instead.
