I thought the stop motion scenes were made completely with CGI but thankfully no. Kudos to Tim Burton and all the other people who stayed true to how the first Beetlejuice was made.

You can tell a sequence is done in stop motion because the medium has a certain "feel" to it in the way the characters move. That's how I could tell the plane scene was stop motion.

@@MMAproAtGOLFStop motion isn’t cheap which is why most studios don’t do stop motion and when they do it’s for a short scene. Only a few studios like Laika or Aardman make full length feature films that are made in stop motion.

CGI is great as a last resort and tool but a filmmaker should always try to get things done practically first and use CGI sparingly. It really makes the whole movie better. I think that’s why this film was so successful.

I disagree, I think they both are tools and it’s just about using them in a complimentary manner, take the people standing on the airplane for instance; only a section was on set and had to be extended, that’s the part that gets done digitally with vfx. There’s no point at plotting the two against each other because they are part of the same team working on the same goal, making visually stunning movies

I've not left the cinema with such a huge grin in a long, long time as I did with "Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice". I was starting to think Hollywood was no longer capable of making a film I could enjoy anymore. The talent involved both in front and behind the camera on this production was simply unbelievable and it's fantastic to see their efforts rewarded at the box office.

I'm shocked! I was convinced in the cinema that the scenes with the sand monsters and the plane crash were practically the only CGI in the film! Burton knows how to save WB money. By the way, this year I made my first stop-motion animation. I recorded a miniature garbage can tipping over. A terribly tiring process, you have to have a lot of patience.

Would it be possible to produce a film with the Harryhausen Foundation to make another "fantasy monster movie" like you once did with The Valley of Gwanji back in the late 60s? Hopefully this encourages other filmmakers to incorporate stop motion into a live action environment. The problem with stop motion back in the 80’s and early 90’s is the compositing. However, now we’re at a point where you can put a stop motion character in the same frame as a live action actor and it can look seamless.

I'd love to see more films use stop-motion like this. I'd watch a live-action movie that used modern stop-motion effects for dinosaurs or any other kind of creature. It particularly works for horror because the jerkiness gives it a creepy, uncanny valley.
